Properties and Flavors: The qi is extremely hot. The taste is sweet and pungent. It has slight toxicity. It benefits the Lung and Liver Qi. It treats cold diseases in the heart and abdomen with alternating cold and heat, cholera with muscle cramps, headache and lower back pain, induces sweating, stops irritability, stops excessive salivation, treats coughing, epistaxis (nosebleed), causes abortion, warms the middle, strengthens sinews and bones, unifies the blood vessels, regulates insufficient texture/density, and guides all herbs without fear. Long-term use leads to immortality like a deity.
Cinnamon Bark (Rou Gui) possesses an extremely hot qi, inheriting the fire energy of innate true yang. It enters the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, tonifying and benefiting true yang. Its taste is sweet and pungent, deriving from the flavors of central earth and metal in the earth's essence. It enters the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Having slight toxicity, it possesses dry and fierce properties. It enters the Foot Yangming Dry Metal Stomach and Hand Yangming Dry Metal Large Intestine. Both its qi and flavor ascend; it is yang. Cinnamon Bark's pungent taste obtains the flavor of metal; metal can control Liver Wood. Its extremely hot qi inherits fire energy; fire can control Lung Metal. Through control, transformation and generation occur. Thus, it benefits Lung and Liver Qi. The heart and abdomen are areas traversed by the Taiyin Meridian. Cold diseases with alternating cold and heat refer to cold diseases in the heart and abdomen manifesting with alternating cold and heat. The hot qi and flavor can eliminate the cold of the Taiyin, thus curing alternating cold and heat. Cholera with muscle cramps is a cold-dampness syndrome of the Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Heat can dispel cold, and pungency can scatter dampness; therefore, it governs this condition. The Classics state: "Headaches and disorders at the vertex pass through the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian." The waist is the palace of the Kidney. When Kidney deficiency occurs, fire rises to the head, causing headache and lower back pain. Cinnamon Bark enters the Kidney, guiding fire back to its origin; therefore, it governs this. Pungent and hot nature disperses; thus, it induces sweating. Deficient fire flaming upward causes irritability. Cinnamon Bark guides fire; therefore, it governs stopping irritability. The Kidney governs the five fluids. Cold causes them to float upward. Cinnamon Bark warms the Kidney; therefore, it stops excessive salivation. Pungent and sweet disperse and diffuse, regulating Lung Qi; thus, it governs coughing and epistaxis. Blood heat causes movement; therefore, it causes abortion. Cinnamon Bark assists fire; fire generates Earth; therefore, it warms the middle. The middle refers to the Spleen and Stomach. Sinews are the union of the Liver. Bones are the union of the Kidney. Sweet and pungent flavors tonify the Spleen and Lung. Through control, transformation and generation occur; thus, they fill the Liver and Kidney and strengthen sinews and bones. Regarding unifying blood vessels and regulating insufficient density: heat causes yang qi to circulate freely; thus, blood vessels are unified and tissue density is regulated. Guiding all herbs without fear relies on its nature of circulating and flowing. Long-term use leading to immortality like a deity: pungent and hot assist yang. The Yangming brings spirit. Pure yang becomes immortal and ageless.
