[Rou Dou Kou / Nutmeg]
Qi is warm. Flavor is pungent. Non-toxic. Primarily warms the middle jiao (middle burner), resolves food stagnation, and stops diarrhea. Treats heart and abdominal distension and pain caused by accumulated cold, cholera-like disorders (huoluan), zhong'e (sudden illness due to evil qi) and lengzhu (cold malarial or infectious disease), vomiting of saliva/phlegm, and upward rush of cold qi. Also treats xiao'er ru huo (infantile vomiting and diarrhea due to cold). Preparation: Roast wrapped in bread dough.
Rou Dou Kou has a warm qi, inheriting the mild Wood Qi of spring, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its flavor is pungent and non-toxic, acquiring the dry Metal flavor of the West, entering the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian and the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Both its aroma and flavor are ascending, belonging to Yang. The Stomach is the central earth. Pungent-warmth warms the Stomach, thereby warming the middle. When the Stomach is warm, food digests easily; thus, it resolves food stagnation. Cold in the Large Intestine leads to loose stools. Pungent-warmth warms the intestines, thereby stopping diarrhea. Accumulated over time, cold gathers in the intestines. If exposed to cold again in winter, the Large Intestine becomes diseased with distension, and the Stomach is also hindered from digesting food, leading to gastric distension. Distension causes abdominal fullness and heart/stomach pain. Rou Dou Kou warms the stomach and intestines; when Stomach Yang is sufficient, distension subsides. Huoluan is caused by damp-heat in the Stomach. Pungent-warmth dries the Stomach, and huoluan stops naturally. The Stomach is the source of Yang Qi. When Stomach Yang declines, Yin pathogens invade, causing zhong'e and lengzhu. Rou Dou Kou warms the Stomach; when Stomach Yang is sufficient, Yin pathogens dissipate, and zhong'e/lengzhu heal. Liver cold causes Yin Qi to rise, leading to vomiting of saliva and emission of cold qi. Rou Dou Kou warms the Liver; when the Liver is balanced, vomiting and rebellious Qi subside. Xiao'er ru huo is due to Stomach cold failing to receive food. Pungent-warmth disperses cold, hence it also treats this condition.
Prescription Methods:
Combine Rou Dou Kou with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Buguzhi (Fructus Psoraleae), Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), and Sharen (Fructus Amomi) to treat cold diarrhea. Combine with Sharen, Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Renshen, Hongqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata Rubra), Zhaurou (Sarcocarpus Crataegi), Huoxiang (Herba Pogostemonis), and Maiya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus) to treat diarrhea and resolve food stagnation. Combine with Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) and Zao Rou (Sarcocarpus Jujubae) to make pills for treating chronic diarrhea. Combine with Chuan Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) and rice paste to make pills for treating cold diarrhea.
[Fu Zi / Prepared Aconite Root]
Qi is greatly hot. Flavor is pungent. Highly toxic. Primarily treats wind-cold cough with rebellious Qi, pathogenic factors, wind-damp bi syndrome with flaccidity and spasms, knee pain preventing walking, breaking masses, firm accumulations, and blood stasis masses (xiejia), and metallic wounds. Preparation: Soak in fecal water, boil, remove skin and umbilicus before use.
Fu Zi has a greatly hot qi. Its warmth inherits the mild Wood Qi of spring, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its great heat inherits the pure Yang fiery Qi, entering the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian to supplement True Yang. Its flavor is pungent and highly toxic, acquiring the dry and harsh Metal flavor of the West, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Both its aroma and flavor are dense, belonging to Yang. It treats wind-cold cough with rebellious Qi because when the Lung is invaded by wind-cold pathogens, Metal loses its descending nature, pathogens obstruct the Lung, causing cough and rebellious Qi. Fu Zi enters the Lung; pungent-heat can resolve wind-cold. Wind-damp Qi is Earth Qi; contracting it harms skin, flesh, sinews, and bones, causing large sinews to shorten and small sinews to lengthen, resulting in spasms and flaccidity. Fu Zi enters the Liver; the Liver governs sinews. Pungency disperses dampness, heat dispels cold. When wind-damp disperses, spasms and flaccidity heal. Knee pain preventing walking is due to deficiency of Liver-Kidney Yang and dampness flowing into joints. Warmth benefits Yang, pungent toxicity moves dampness, hence it treats this. Firm masses and blood stasis occur because things with abundant Yang are light/loose, while those with abundant Yin are solid/firm. Firmness results from cold coagulation and blood stasis. Fu Zi's heat softens hardness, pungency scatters nodules, warmth moves stagnation. Metallic wounds fail to close in cold. Fu Zi warms the Lung; the Lung governs skin and hair. When skin/hair are warm, wound edges unite.
Prescription Methods:
Fu Zi assists Renshen, Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi), and Wuweizi to tonify Kidney True Yang. Assists Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) to eliminate wind-damp. Combine with Renshen, Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Sharen, and Chenpi to treat slow convulsion (man jing). Combine with Baizhu, Rougui, Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis), and Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) to treat cold hernia (han shan). Combine with Renshen and Chenpi to treat chronic vomiting and hiccup. Combine with Renshen, Baishao, Gancao, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), and Bei Wei (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) to treat True Yang collapse due to erroneous sweating and purging in Shanghan (Cold Damage).
