Taking medicine when one is not ill is like adding extra pillars inside a wall (superfluous and unnecessary). This is because each medicinal substance possesses its own specific bias or property. The *Rites of Zhou* records that physicians were in charge of medical administration, ordering the collection of toxic substances to be used jointly for medical purposes; this is precisely the meaning. If one can indeed restrain desires and preferences, and exercise caution regarding cold and heat, what else could there be to worry about? Grains, tea, vegetables, and fruits are all sufficient for nourishing and sustaining life. Although Ginseng (*Ren Shen*) and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (*Bai Zhu*) are excellent, they should also be temporarily set aside. Otherwise, the pathogenic factors of the Six Excesses (Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) will enter through deficiency, diseases will inevitably arise, and only then will medicines begin to take effect. Zhang Zhongjing listed 113 prescriptions in his work on Cold Damage (*Shang Han Lun*), and described 22 categories of miscellaneous diseases in the *Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies* (*Jin Gui Yao Lue*), which is already very comprehensive. Now, Mr. Ye elucidates the subtle points and resolves doubts regarding these two books, opening up a new perspective, referred to as the *Commentary on Nanyang's Classics*. There is also the revised and supplemented *Remnant Books of Shenzhai*, which truly serves as a compassionate boat in the vast ocean of medicine and a precious torch in the midnight dark. Students who read it thoroughly and reflect deeply will understand clinical presentations clearly and will not be confused in their treatment strategies. Here, we briefly list the various syndromes mentioned, with phonetic annotations and explanations, to facilitate reading by the audience.
Bi (pronounced 'bi', same as 'mi'. Detailed in *Su Wen: Bi Lun* and *Ling Shu: Zhou Bi Pian*. Zhou Bi refers to pain throughout the entire body. The common usage "Bi" is incorrect; "Bi" sounds like "Pi", referring to a female quail.) Jing (Qing, rising tone. Wind-induced stiffness disease. Commonly written incorrectly as " ". " " sounds like 'chi', meaning evil/disgusting.) Dan (sounds like 'dan', jaundice/yellow disease. There are five types of symptoms.) Wei (sounds like 'wei'. Differentiates between excess Bi and deficiency Wei. For Bi, promoting Qi circulation and overcoming dampness is suitable; for Wei, clearing dryness and nourishing Yin is suitable.) (Same as " ", swelling of the foot.) Luan (sounds like 'luan', contracture of hands and feet.) Mo Ji (Mo refers to the four limbs. Wind excess causing Mo Ji is seen in *Zuo Zhuan*.) Luo Li (sounds like 'luo li', tendon knotting disease.) Zheng Chong (sounds like 'zheng chong'.) Zheng Jia (sounds like 'zheng jia', diseases of the lower jiao, appearing below the umbilicus, common in women. Note: Another character "Zheng" sounds like 'zhi', also referring to intestinal disease.) San Chong Fu Shi (The explanation emphasizes that it is generated by damp-heat, which is a correct principle.) Yang (Yang sound.) Shan Jia (Shan sounds like 'shan', yin disease. This character has a different pronunciation. Heart pain is called Shan; women often suffer from this disease.) Nu Ge (sounds like 'nu ge'.) (sounds like 'bi', paralysis of one foot is called Bo, paralysis of both feet is called .) Zhu (sound 'zhu'.) Yue (Yuan, entering tone. Sound without matter, a disease of rebellious Qi.) (sound 'mu', i.e., duck-like loose stool.) Meng Wu Yan Mei (Mei refers to breathing during sleep. Speaking while dreaming and waking is called Mei, meaning dreaming and waking but being trapped/nightmare'd in sleep. It is believed that fire arises from below and phlegm blocks above, heart blood is deficient and spirit loses its residence, not that there are truly external spirits causing harm.) Tan Yin (Phlegm has six types: damp-heat, wind-cold, food, qi. Fluid retention has five types: Zhi, Liu, Fu, Yi, Xuan. All originate from dampness. However, *Jin Gui* only mentions four types of fluid retention: Tan, Xuan, Yi, Zhi. Yao's annotation states that Liu Yin is equivalent to Tan Yin. Zhi Yin causes difficulty in breathing; 'Zhi' implies being at a branch, off-center and irregular. The patient experiences wheezing, fullness, dizziness, and vertigo, hindering respiration, hence "difficulty in breathing".) Rong (sounds like 'chi zong', i.e., convulsions/spasms. Sounds like 'zhu nuo'.) (Same as " ", sounds like 'tui'.) (sounds like 'pi', i.e., diarrhea/dysentery.) Long (sounds like 'long', difficulty in urination.) Pi Shui Feng Shui (Due to Spleen deficiency failing to control water. Detailed in *Jin Gui*.) Xue Qi (Qi is synonymous with Se.) (sounds like 'ni', small insects in the anus.) (sounds like 'pao zu', red nose due to alcohol consumption.) (sounds like 'jue'.) Wo (sounds like 'wu', water flowing down from above is called Wo.) (sounds like 'ni', stagnation.) (Same as " ", sounds like 'gan', black aura on the face.) Li (Originally sounds like 'li', also said to sound like 'lai', which is the character for Leprosy/Malignant Skin Disease.)
