Fu Yi (Pteropus / Bat)
Salty in flavor, neutral in nature. Non-toxic. Another view states it is slightly warm and toxic. Originally named "Bianfu" (bat), it was commonly found in ancient temples. It hides during the day and flies at night, hence the name "Fu Yi" (hiding wing).
Males and females interact through resonance, giving birth to live young that take shape. Due to its heavy head, it gathers and hangs upside down; it can store Qi and does not eat during winter. Those weighing one jin are considered excellent, and those white as snow are even better. (Because it can store Qi, it lives long and turns white; humans consume it hoping to share its longevity.) Gray ones are very common and should not be consumed. In summer, nets are spread for capture. Processing follows Lei Gong's methods: remove claws from the flanks and external hairs, retaining the beak, feet, flesh, and wings. Soak in pure wine overnight, strain, and dry in the shade. Apply fresh juice of Polygonatum sibiricum (Huangjing) immediately, then dry over gentle fire. It can be ground into pills or powders; each dose is swallowed with wine. As an adjuvant drug combined with Amaranthus seeds (Xianshi) and Agrimoniae Herba (Yingshi), it expels five types of strangury and promotes urination. Applied to bright eyes, it clears nebulae and cataracts. Long-term use extends life without worry, bringing joy and beauty. Blood from the eye applied to the eyes allows vision in the dark. Also known as "Ye Ming Sha" (Night-bright Sand), which is its excrement. Burned to ash and taken with wine, it expels dead fetuses in the womb; fried and mixed with wine, it treats scrofula on the neck. Crushed into powder and mixed with rice food in small amounts, it also treats infantile malnutrition (Wugu disease).
Ge Jie (Gekko gecko)
Salty in flavor, neutral in nature. Slightly toxic. Another view states non-toxic. Found in mountains of Lingnan, often under trees along city walls. The head resembles a toad, and the back looks like silkworm eggs. The tail is long and the body short, with a soil-yellow color. One male and one female call out to each other by name. Its movement is no different from a dragonfly; it constantly protects its tail tip. When seen being captured, it bites off its own tail. Collection must be complete for efficacy in medicine. Processing follows Lei Gong's methods: remove the head, feet, scales, and bristles; use both male and female, roast with butter until ready, then grind. If sold to market vendors, ensure they hold a small piece in their mouth before testing: if they run a hundred steps without panting, it is genuine. It primarily treats incessant cough due to Lung deficiency, and persistent hemoptysis due to Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/empyema). It expels all cases of transmission tuberculosis (Chuan shi lao zhu) and removes all evil spirits attached to the body. It also regulates menstruation and promotes urinary flow.
