黑同，黑乃水色。丹溪曰∶鸡属土，有金与木火，则所禀者，惟少水耳。今得毛色之乌，是
五行具全，不致偏胜。用之治病，宁不为优。古人取义，实在于此。然常五更鸣者，盖巽为
鸡，巽位属于东方，五更阳升，必从此位，鸡感其气，故亦声鸣。又阳主动，鸡初鸣两翅先
拍，则可知矣。
兔头骨

丹雄鸡

Rabbit Skull Bone
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Neutral. Non-toxic. Found everywhere in deep forests and empty valleys. It is formed when the rabbit gazes at the moon during pregnancy, and the young rabbits are born from the mother's mouth. The nature is cunning and good at running; the eyes are extremely round. Lifespan can reach a thousand years, with fur turning white, indicating it fully possesses Metal Qi. Best used in medicinal preparations. The part of the skull below the jaw (referred to as "head bone below pregnancy" in text, likely referring to specific anatomical usage or folk belief) stops epilepsy, dizziness, and headache; applying the scalp to mouse curd grass (Shuqu Cao) dispels skin stinging pain caused by Gui Zhu (ghostly afflictions). Meat taste: Pungent, neutral. It is a superior food item. Completely avoid in spring and summer; suitable for consumption in autumn and winter. Mainly treats damp-bi syndrome with heat steaming, suppresses dryness-heat flare-ups from Dan Shi (mineral drugs). Tonifies the middle, benefits Qi, stops thirst, strengthens the spleen. Pregnant women must not swallow it, as it has been verified to cause cleft lip in offspring. Rabbit liver removes dim vision; rabbit fat/oil unblocks deafness. Rabbit brain applied topically treats chapped cracks and frostbite; rabbit hair applied to foul, rotting acne sores. Dried rabbit feces can also be decocted for juice; "Wan Yue Sha" (rabbit feces exposed to moonlight), traditionally famous, treats acne sores forming inside the eyes, hemorrhoids with rectal bleeding, all of which can be taken. Rabbit skin with hair dried and burnt to ash, ground fine, mixed evenly, and taken with hot wine regulates postpartum retention of the placenta and residual blood rushing to the heart, a critical condition requiring immediate drinking.
Red Rooster
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Slightly warm. Another view: Slightly cold. Non-toxic. Abundant everywhere, usable as food. Those from Korea are best; seek this origin for medicinal use. Its nature moves Wind; those with tendon spasms must strictly avoid it. Its flavor aids Fire (aids Liver Fire and Damp-Heat Fire); those with bone-steaming fever must beware. Eating it with Water Chicken causes Dun Shi (a disease caused by evil qi); eating it with fish juice forms Xin Jia (abdominal mass). All dietary therapies require knowing these contraindications. Tonifies deficiency, warms the middle, calms the spirit, strengthens vessels. Stops bleeding, removes blood leakage, kills toxins, wards off misfortune. Rooster head kills Gui Zhu and demonic spirits (those from the east gate are especially good). Rooster liver tonifies Kidney deficiency and Liver damage. Rooster brain blood, pricked and applied, prevents harm from Fei Si Yan (a type of eye disease); Rooster manure steeped in wine (stir-fried black, then steeped) treats Bai Hu Feng (severe joint pain like tiger bites) and stops pain. White rooster taste is slightly pungent and sour, slightly inferior; if raised for three years, it can serve ghosts and gods. Treats mania and evil qi, stops thirst, harmonizes the middle. Promotes urination, suppresses Dan Du (mineral poison). Rooster spur treats difficult labor in women; rooster brain prevents infantile convulsions and epilepsy. Black rooster is slightly warm, tonifies the middle, stops pain; treats fractures, trauma, carbuncles, and swelling, kills ghosts, calms the fetus. Rooster crown blood dripped into the mouth of a person who hanged themselves, combined with pressing the chest until warmth returns, revives them; hot blood soaked on horse bite wounds, as well as fractured bone pain, both recover. Rooster fat removes deafness; rooster heart eliminates evil dreams. Rooster intestine, roasted dry, stops urinary incontinence; rooster liver/left wing restores Yin function. Rooster bile applied to ear sores resembling lunar eclipse (ulcerated ears) and dim eyesight; rooster flank is cold-natured, also clears irritability and heat. For men with nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea, red and white dysentery, it harmonizes. For women with metrorrhagia and uterine bleeding, red and white leukorrhea, it is strictly forbidden. Rooster tail burnt to ash seals skin thorns; rooster feather (He) burnt to ash promotes menstruation and stops bleeding. Rooster urine (white part) is slightly cold, widely used since ancient times. Zhang Zhongjing treated muscle cramps with powder (Ji Shi Bai San treats cramps entering the abdomen). *Su Wen* records its name for treating drum-like distension (treated with Ji Shi Li, Shi means feces). Mainly treats loss of body fluids and thirst, resolves wind-cold with alternating chills and fever. Breaks stone strangury, promotes urination, stops enuresis, eliminates scars. Yellow rooster benefits Qi, strengthens Yang, mainly treats middle-jiao injury and thirst; calms the five zang organs, prevents dysentery and diarrhea, treats chronic weakness with enuresis. Heals severe injuries, strengthens spleen and stomach. Old hens that no longer brood chicks: their meat kills people. Families raising chickens should remember this. Boiled chicken eggs calm the heart and stop fright. Benefits Qi, gradually opens the voice (eating raw is also good, often used by singers), expels Wind, especially calms the fetus. Mixing yolk and white (with mackerel pillow) creates something precious like amber. Cannot gather mustard seeds, but can seek profit. Raw egg soaked in vinegar until spoiled, applied to face blemishes makes skin radiant. Egg yolk boiled with tangled hair dissolves like water; taken internally treats infantile convulsive fever and dysentery, drives away phlegm and convulsions in hundred diseases; applied externally removes infantile heat-fire sores, head ringworm, and lacquer allergy. Egg white mixed with strong vinegar and honey is also miraculous: vinegar promotes passage of postpartum blood stasis and pain, helps retain placenta; honey removes external heat toxins about to erupt, treats red swollen hot eyes. The inner membrane of the shell is named Feng Huang Tui (Phoenix Molting). Taken with Ephedra Herba (Mahuang) and Aster Root (Zi Wan), it scatters long-standing cough and stagnant qi miraculously. Black hen nourishes Blood, calms the fetus, treats carbuncles and ulcers, drains pus, promotes blood circulation. Mainly treats wind-cold-damp bi, tonifies postpartum emaciation. Do not taste brooding hens, they kill quickly. Eating eggs supplements true Yin deficiency, stops frequent postpartum bleeding; the inner membrane (also shell lining) ground and applied treats nebula obstructing vision, manages relapse of cold damage due to overwork. Nest grass prohibits infant night crying; place under the mat without letting the mother know.
Commentary by Chen Jiamo: There are many types of chickens, commonly used in ancient and modern formulas, distinguished by feather color as superior or inferior. Red roosters provide crown blood and head; yellow hens provide egg white and egg. For heart, liver, gallbladder, blood, intestine, fat, feathers, wings, yellow skin, and feces, black roosters are considered superior. Wu and Hei (black) are the same; black is the color of Water. Zhu Danxi said: Chicken belongs to Earth, possessing Metal, Wood, and Fire, so what it lacks is only Water. Now obtaining the black feather color means the Five Elements are complete, preventing excess of any one. Using it for treatment is surely superior. This is the true meaning ancient people derived. However, why does it crow at the fifth watch? Xun represents the chicken; Xun position belongs to the East. At the fifth watch, Yang rises, necessarily from this position. The chicken feels this Qi, hence it crows. Also, Yang is active; when the chicken first crows, it flaps its wings first, which confirms this.
