Lianzi (Nelumbinis Semen)
Sweet and astringent in flavor, neutral and cold in nature. Non-toxic. Grown in ponds, harvested in autumn moon. Raw consumption slightly moves Qi, steamed consumption nourishes the Spirit. If consumed without removing the plumule (heart), it may cause sudden cholera; grinding the plumule also stops postpartum thirst and wasting. (After childbirth, when much stasis blood is expelled leading to thirst, taking its juice is effective.) For all uses, one must understand this. It benefits the Qi and Blood of the twelve meridians, calms the Fire of the Sovereign and Minister above and below. It secures essence, clears the Heart, removes lower back pain, and stops dysentery. Mixed with rice to cook porridge (mixed with Jingmi, Oryzae Semen Japonicum), it gradually opens the ears and eyes to clarity; ground into rice, it instantly strengthens the limbs. Taken as pills with wax and honey, it resists aging and hunger. Daily consumption as usual reduces anger and generates joy. The *Shennong Benjing* notes: Geese eat feces in fields (those not yet digested). Monkeys hide them in rock crevices. Those that remain unspoiled for years can be obtained (often found where there is no rain or overcast weather). Consuming them extends life and brings boundless laughter. They also beautify the complexion, making one fit to become an immortal. Furthermore, those dried and blackened within the pod after late autumn are named Shilianzi (Lapis Nelumbinis Semen). They sink completely in water, but float only when boiled with salt brine. Consumption further clears the Heart and darkens hair. (Qingxin Lianzi Yin, Clear Heart Lotus Seed Decoction, uses only this.) Hebi (Lotus Calyx/Stem base, i.e., Di) is bitter in flavor, excellent for calming the fetus, expelling stasis blood, retaining healthy blood, and driving out bloody dysentery. Lianfang (Lotus Pod) burned to ash stops bleeding very quickly; it is recommended for pregnancy, and for expelling the placenta, both should be decocted with wine. (Fresh ones decocted and taken orally.) Helie (Lotus Leaf) breaks blood and stops thirst, recorded in *Furen Liangfang*. It was originally used in Yilao's Zhizhu Wan, and also used in agents that guide wind, because its shape resembles the Zhen trigram (Thunder) with an open top. Zhen represents Thunder, belongs to Wood, transforms into Wind, thus borrowing this to guide the meridian and seek efficacy.
Petals are incompatible with Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Suan (Garlic), they calm the Heart, lighten the body, and preserve youth. Huaxin (Lotus Plumule/Flower Center) is named Fzuoshan (Buddha's Seat Beard), (because it is on the Buddha seat lotus). It tonifies the Kidney, astringes essence, and consolidates marrow. Ou (Lotus Rhizome) is sweet and cold, mainly verified for excessive blood conditions, treating stasis blood so it disperses and does not coagulate. It stops vomiting and epistaxis from reckless overflow, and treats postpartum blood accumulation and irritability. (During childbirth, all raw and cold foods are taboo, except Ou.) It resolves alcohol toxicity and eliminates heat, promotes tissue regeneration for metallic wounds. Tasted with honey, it fattens abdominal organs and prevents various parasites; cooked and eaten, it solidifies the Lower Jiao and greatly opens the stomach. Jie (Lotus Node) crushed with Dihuang to extract juice also treats red discharge from mouth and nose. Added to hot wine and Tongbian (Child Urine), efficacy is obtained more easily. Honglianhua (Red Lotus Flower) and Bailianhua (White Lotus Flower) were tribute items brought by Hu people to China; whether taken in large amounts or for a long time, they all darken hair and brighten the complexion. Bilianhua (Green Lotus Flower) comes from the Imperial Palace, only suitable for divining auspicious omens, not suitable for ingestion, let this be known.
