Taste is astringent, becoming sweet after prolonged chewing. Chewing and swallowing the juice treats fishbone impaction in the throat.
When consuming, one must thoroughly remove the floating hairs on the surface; otherwise, it damages the human lungs. The flowers are also fragrant and white. Among all fruits, only this one is prone to insect infestation, with few escaping being worm-eaten. *Tu Jing* (Illustrated Classic) states: "Before going to bed, eat one or two pieces and then sleep." Doing so, however, may cause too much fullness and obstruction in the stomach region.
The fruit resembles winter melon seeds and is rarely used in dietary therapy.
[Note: The original text contains ambiguous measurements/subjects here, likely referring to a specific gourd or melon variety mentioned in broader context, but translated literally based on provided text] Large in size, harvested in winter as vegetables, pressed to remove juice, and candied with honey to serve as fruit. For patients suffering from back carbuncles (Fabei) and all kinds of abscesses and ulcers, cut off a large piece, place it on the sore, and replace it when it becomes hot; it is very effective in dispersing heat and toxic qi.
This is the pedicle of the sweet melon (Tianguadi). Remove the melon skin and use only the pedicle, about half an inch long, dried extremely well, ground into fine powder without limiting the amount. According to the severity of the illness, use one or two qianbi each time, mixed with one qianbi of Nifen (Calomel), blended evenly with half a bowl of water, and administered by force-feeding. It treats sudden onset of wind-phlegm, Qi blockage leading to fainting and lying down. After a long time of taking the medicine, phlegm will naturally discharge. If one feels phlegm present but other medicines fail to resolve it, simply using this method will cause phlegm to discharge. If phlegm does not discharge after a long time of taking medicine, hold a piece of rock sugar in the mouth and swallow it, and the phlegm will immediately discharge. This substance does not harm the body at all, completely surpassing minerals like Shilu and cinnabar.
Taking it during the summer months prevents heatstroke entirely. However, excessive consumption invariably leads to dysentery. For poor people who consume it excessively, developing dysentery by late autumn becomes difficult to treat because it consumes and damages Yang Qi. It can also be preserved by decocting and soaking like white winter melon.
It is the seed of the mallow plant (Kuicai), found everywhere. The sprouts have a slippery and purgative nature and do not benefit the human body. For those suffering from boils and furuncles where toxic heat attacks internally without pus formation, swallowing three to five seeds with water causes them to transform into openings that discharge pus.
In all four seasons, harvest the roots of the red single-leaf variety, dry them in the shade, and they treat leukorrhea and expel pus, blood, and foul matter, showing great efficacy.
It is a different species from Hollyhock (Shukui), not the yellow variety within Hollyhock. The center underside of the leaves has a rosewood color. Pick them, separate them into sections, and dry them in the sun. Otherwise, they will rot. They are an essential herb for treating sores and ulcers. The seeds: take forty-nine grains at the time of labor, grind them into a paste, mix with warm water, and ingest; after a while, delivery occurs.
