The earth from the east wall is exposed to the morning sun first. It obtains the qi of the "shao huo" (less fire/early warming energy) of the initial yang, and is therefore effective. Earth from a south-facing wall at noon possesses depleted "zhuang huo" (strong fire) energy and is not used. (Citing Zong)
It has a sweet flavor and warm nature. It treats sores in the lower body, rectal prolapse, stops dysentery, cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea with restlessness, and warm malaria. In the past, a woman suddenly developed a craving for river mud, consuming several bowls daily mixed with water using old soil from wall crevices, after which she recovered. For patients suffering from vomiting, diarrhea, and cholera due to excessive dampness in the spleen and stomach, stir new earth from the east wall into fresh drawn water, clarify it, and administer the liquid. This is because the spleen earth prefers dryness and dislikes dampness; taking earth illuminated by the true fire of the sun guides the generating qi of this true fire to tonify the spleen earth and overcome dampness, thereby naturally stopping vomiting and diarrhea. In methods from the Lingnan region, southern wall earth is used in the *Xiangchun San* (Toona Sinensis Powder) to treat miasma malaria. Recently, western wall earth is used to treat regurgitation and vomiting. Whether drawing upon the qi of the Li Fire (South) or the condensing qi of the West, the purpose is merely to borrow the qi to tonify the spleen. (Li Shizhen citing Benhu)
Sores in the lower body arise from dampness invading the spleen. Obtaining the strength of yang qi, it can dry dampness and eliminate sores. Rectal prolapse is also caused by damp-heat in the large intestine; its sweet, warm, and drying properties make it suitable for treating this condition. Its ability to stop dysentery, cholera, and restlessness stems from the sweet flavor tonifying the spleen and stomach, and the warm nature harmonizing the middle jiao. Furthermore, earth receiving the initial qi of the sun can dispel summerheat-dampness pathogens, thus treating warm malaria. (Chen Shigong citing Zhongchun)
For protruding anus, take one sheng of earth from the east wall of a house, grind it into powder, and apply it using long soap pods (*Gleditsia sinensis*) as an applicator. Continue by roasting the soap pod and alternating between applying powder and hot compresses.
In cases of sudden summerheat stroke, stirring earth slurry and administering it provides relief. For death-like collapse during summer, take hot earth from a crossroad, place it around the umbilicus, and have the patient urinate hot urine into it. Then, mix equal parts of this hot earth and garlic, crush to extract juice, remove dregs, and force-feed; life can be restored.
For severe cold conditions treating carbuncles on the back and various malignant sores, dry the earth in shade, grind into powder, mix with fresh water, and apply externally; pain stops immediately. To treat ding-sores (hard, deep-rooted boils), mix equal parts of earth from beneath manure pits, cicada sloughs, and full scorpions. Crush and form into cakes the size of a coin. Boil in sesame oil, consume warm, and apply the residue around the sore to facilitate the expulsion of the ding-toxin. (*Shengji Zonglu*) Another method: place hot manure inside walnut shells and cover the ding-sore; the root will rot and emerge. (Chen Shigong citing Zhongchun)
