Above three chi is called feces. Below three chi is called earth. When using earth as medicine, one must remove its impurities and prevent the intrusion of "ke shui" (external mixed water). (Chen Cangqi)
The flavor is sweet and the nature is neutral. It treats cold-heat dysentery, red-and-white dysentery, and abdominal pain caused by heat-toxin knotting, as well as hematochezia. (Take dry earth, boil in water for three to five boils, filter out the dregs, and take warm, one to two sheng.) It also resolves various drug poisonings, meat toxins, *He Kou Jiao* (a type of toxic pepper) poisoning, and wild mushroom poisoning. The prince of the Song Dynasty suffered from convulsions. ("Yong" refers to limb stiffness and spasms; Zhang Zong referred to it as " ", commonly known as twitching or convulsion.) Qian Yi prescribed *Huang Tu Tang* (Yellow Earth Decoction), which cured the condition. Emperor Shenzong asked about the reason for the cure. Qian Yi replied, "Earth overcomes Water. When Water becomes balanced, Wind naturally subsides." (From *Biography of Qian Yi*)
Wu Shaoshi, while leading troops in summer, felt extreme thirst and drank a cup of stream water. He felt as if something had entered his throat, subsequently falling ill. After several months, he wasted away. Every time food and drink passed down his throat, he felt as if ten thousand insects were swarming and attacking, causing both itching and pain. Zhang Jimfeng (Zhang Rui, author of *Beiji Fang*) diagnosed the case and instructed him not to eat on the following morning. He took yellow earth from where people walked, stirred it into two sheng of warm wine, and administered it along with one hundred pills. The patient felt unbearable pain. Upon defecating, he expelled over a thousand horse-leeches, half of which were already dead. Wu Shaoshi was extremely exhausted but stabilized after three days of recuperation. This condition involves parasites entering the internal organs, where they inevitably breed. When hungry, they gather to suck essence and blood; when full, they scatter throughout the viscera. Merely knowing how to kill them without clearing them out is ultimately useless. By inducing fasting now, we lure the parasites, satisfying their preference so they gather due to hunger, and then wash them all out at once. This is indeed a skillful method. (From *Yijian Zhi*)
For pediatric *Wu Sha Jing Feng* (Black Miasma Convulsive Disease) presenting with blackening of the entire body, rapidly push downwards. Take one bowl of yellow earth, grind it into powder, add one zhong of aged vinegar, stir-fry until hot, wrap in cloth, and apply as a compress to guide the pathogen downwards to the feet. Pricking the skin to release blood is advisable. For painful and swollen flesh hemorrhoids, use yellow earth from the morning sun, *Huang Lian* (Coptidis Rhizoma) powder, and *Pi Xiao* (Natrii Sulfas) each in an amount of one liang. Grind them together with pig bile (*Suis Fel*) into a paste. Form pills the size of a jujube daily and insert them into the anus. Remove them after one night along with the stool. Internally administer pills composed of *Wu Mei* (Mume Fructus) and *Huang Lian* (Coptidis Rhizoma).
