Hair (Fa)
Select hair from a male under twenty years of age, free from disease, with a complexion showing a balance of red and white, cut from the vertex of the head.
Flavor: Bitter. Nature: Warm. Main indications: Five types of strangury (obstruction of urination) and Guan-Ge syndrome (obstruction of both urination and defecation). Treats pediatric convulsions and adult tetanus/spasms. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*) Stops bleeding due to blood stagnation causing syncope; treats traumatic wounds exposed to wind. Decocted with egg yolk until liquefied, it treats various diseases caused by pediatric heat and fright.
Disordered Hair (Luan Fa) (Use hair fallen from combing as a substitute)
Flavor: Bitter. Nature: Slightly warm. Its efficacy in nourishing Yin is very rapid. It resolves blood stasis. (From Zhu Danxi) Medical texts use it to treat Transmitted Corpse Consumption (chronic consumptive diseases like tuberculosis), hematuria, lower gastrointestinal bleeding, strangury syndromes, as well as various disorders of the anterior genitalia and hemorrhoids. When added to various plasters, it can detoxify, relieve pain, and promote flesh regeneration.
Attached Formulas Epistaxis: Burn the "Xue Yu" (hair residue) to ash, blow into the nostrils for immediate cessation of bleeding. Jaundice with dark urine: Take one qian of Luan Fa ash with water, three times daily. Female metrorrhagia: Wash Luan Fa thoroughly, burn to ash and powder, take one qian with warm wine on an empty stomach. Hematemesis: Take one qian of hair ash, two he of rice vinegar, and one zhan of plain boiled water, mix and take. Hematuria: Take two qian of hair ash, take with vinegar-infused water. Painful strangury with blood: Burn two qian of Luan Fa to retain its character (charred but not carbonized), add a small amount of Moschus, take with rice decoction. Bloody stool: Char half a liang of hair to ash, mix with powdered Ji Guan Hua (Celosia cristata) and Bo Ye (Platycladi Cacumen), each one liang, take two qian with wine before sleep, follow up with one zhan of warm wine early the next morning; effective after one dose. Female Labor Jaundice: Use half a jin of Pig Fat, and three pieces of Luan Fa the size of a chicken egg, decoct together until the hair melts; the medicine is ready. Divide into two doses. The pathogenic factor exits via urination. Traumatic Wind Stroke: Take Luan Fa the size of a chicken egg, fry until blackened in a non-oily vessel, grind to powder, pour one zhan of good wine over it, administer orally. Repeat administration after a short while. Carbuncles and malignant sores: Mix equal parts of Luan Fa and Rattus Molt (rat feces), burn to ash, insert into the sore with a needle; highly effective. Non-healing wound ulcers: Burn Luan Fa, Vespa Nidus, and Ophichthus Skin to retain their character, one qian each, take mixed with warm wine before meals; miraculous effect.
[Discussion] The luster of hair derives from Blood. (The luster of beard derives from Essence; the luster of eyebrows derives from Qi.) Hair belongs to the Heart and inherits Fire Qi to grow upwards. (Beard belongs to the Kidney and inherits Water Qi to grow downwards; eyebrows belong to the Liver and inherit Wood Qi to grow sideways. Men have kidney Qi flowing outward, hence they have beards; women and eunuchs do not have beards, and their eyebrows and hair are no different from men's.) Danxi stated that its efficacy in nourishing Yin is very rapid. Because it nourishes Yin while inheriting Fire Qi to grow upwards, what it nourishes is the Yin within Yang. Blood is born from the Yin within Yang, originally nourishing the hair upwards, and then returning to the Yang within. Thus, its tonifying efficacy is rapid. However, the reason it can also resolve blood stasis lies in this type of tonification: it does not supplement what was originally absent, but returns what was originally present, without overstepping boundaries or acting hastily. Therefore, tonification is synonymous with circulation. The generation and transformation of Qi and Blood in the human body are mechanistically integrated. Even if Danxi claims its efficacy is rapid, this is merely a forced designation. The *Bencao Jing* first mentions treating five types of strangury and Guan-Ge. What is the meaning? Essentially, Water and Blood are two aspects of one entity. By using tonification as a method of circulation, how could there be doubt about the unblocking of water passages? As for treating pediatric convulsions and adult tetanus, this aligns perfectly with the principle of nourishing Yin within Yang. (Both convulsions and tetanus arise from deficiency of Yin within Yang.) Similarly, the treatment mechanisms for blood stagnation syncope and traumatic wounds exposed to wind do not exceed the scope of Yin deficiency within Yang. The subtle principles can be inferred analogously. Mu Shi said that after frying, the flavor becomes unpleasant, and it is not suitable for those with weak stomachs.
[Processing] Select hair from individuals without disease, regardless of gender. Newly cut or old fallen hair is acceptable; fetal hair from young boys is also good. Wash clean with Gleditsia Sinensis water, place in a jar, and char to retain its character for use. Used in external surgical medicines and for decocting plasters.
