The jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) is sweet in taste and warm in nature, with strong aroma and flavor, belonging to Yang. It enters the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its main functions are to warm the stomach and benefit the spleen, harmonize Yin and Yang, regulate Ying and Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi), and assist the twelve meridians. (Sweetness can relax and nourish Yin Blood; when blood is sufficient, vessels generate.) It treats subcardiac palpitations and shortness of breath. It can detoxify Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi, 附子), Aconitum kusnezoffii (Wutou, 乌头), and Aconitum kusnezoffii var. lateriflorum (Tianxiong, 天雄). When roasted together with Guangfen (refined starch), it treats gan accumulation dysentery. For children suffering from autumnal dysentery, eating worm-eaten jujubes is beneficial. Jujube belongs to Earth but contains Fire; its taste is sweet and nature is relaxing. Sweetness first enters the Spleen Meridian, making it a herb for the blood aspect of the Spleen Meridian. (Zhu Danxi) The Classic says: "For insufficiency within, use sweet herbs to tonify." It also says: "For insufficiency of form, warm with Qi." Jujube's sweetness can tonify the Middle Jiao, and its warmth can benefit Spleen Qi and relax Spleen tension. When pathogens are at the half-exterior/half-interior level, Ying and Wei contend; pungent and sweet flavors resolve this. Ginger and jujube combined harmonize Ying and Wei. (Cheng Wuji)
[Discussion] Suwen states that jujube is the fruit of the Spleen, suitable for consumption when Spleen disease occurs. This refers to its role in treating diseases and medicating. If eaten frequently without cause, it generates worms and damages teeth. Zhu Danxi said: Those with fullness in the middle jiao should avoid it. Children with gan accumulation should not eat it. Those with toothache or phlegm-heat should not eat it. Fresh jujubes are particularly disadvantageous to humans; excessive consumption leads to alternating chills and fever. (Zhongchun)
[Processing] Use those from Qingzhou and Jin regions, dry them in the sun, and use for decoctions.
Pear (Pyrus bretschneideri) is sweet and slightly sour in taste, cold in nature. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and concurrently the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. It moistens the lungs, cools the heart, resolves phlegm, and descends fire. It treats sudden aphonia and stroke-induced muteness. (Raw pear juice) clears heat knots. Pear juice is cold and slippery, capable of resolving heat in the collaterals. Pediatrics uses Pear Syrup Drink to treat gan-heat, utilizing its cold and moistening efficacy. Whenever there is pain in a specific area of the body, with a rapid and forceless pulse, or thirst, this is a sign that an abscess is about to form. Only by eating pears day and night can the condition turn from severe to mild. Families rich in food and wine, indulging without restraint, inevitably suffer from phlegm-fire stroke and abscesses. Frequent consumption of pears can change danger to safety. Mixing pear juice with Xiatain Gao (Cloud Sky Paste), Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), and Tongbian (Child's Urine) treats stroke-phlegm-heat. Mixing with Renru (Human Milk), Zhejiang (Sugarcane Juice), Lugen (Reed Rhizome Juice), Zhuli, and Tongbian treats blood deficiency gradually forming yige (dysphagia). For children with internal heat and phlegm obstructing the throat, unable to expectorate, whether caused by fright generating phlegm or wind generating phlegm, giving pear juice frequently with a small amount of Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) yields miraculous effects. For phlegm-wheezing and急促 breathing, hollow out a pear, fill it with black soybeans, keep the lid on, tie it securely, roast over fire until cooked, mash into cakes, and eat daily for excellent results.
[Discussion] Fine pears are mostly produced in the northern lands, bearing fruit in autumn. Their flowers are white like snowflakes, inheriting Metal Qi to exhale the essence of extreme Yin. When a patient has a curled tongue and cannot speak, if the pulse is firm and long, it indicates Liver pathogen invading the Heart. What is called "Yang pulsing Yin" should prioritize Liver pathogen. Human Heart is Fire, Kidney is Water; although they house each other, they often fail to interact because Yin does not reach Yang. Within Yang lies Yin, belonging to the Kan mother within Li, associated with the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. It is also contraindicated for lung-cold cough, Spleen-deficiency diarrhea and abdominal pain, as well as postpartum women and children after smallpox. (Zhongchun)
[Processing] Store alternately with radishes, or remove the pear stem and plant it on a radish for storage; both methods prevent rotting for a year.
