It is also called "water flower." This refers to fine sand and water foam in rivers and seas, which condense over a long period to form stones. They have fine pores resembling insect burrows. The texture is loose and light. The color is white.
Those from the sea taste salty and are superior for medicinal use. (Li Shizhen)
The flavor is salty, and the nature is neutral. It treats hernia (Shan Qi). It resolves old phlegm, dissipates accumulations and masses, as well as tumors, goiters, and scrofula (lymph node tuberculosis). It directs Qi downward and treats strangury (Lin syndrome). Floating stone is white in color and light in weight, corresponding to the Lung organ. Its flavor is salty and cold, possessing the function of moistening and descending. Therefore, it enters the Lung to clear phlegm-heat, stop coughing, soften hardness, and clear the upper source. It is also used to treat various types of strangury. (Li Shizhen)
The Liver belongs to Wood; its nature should float but instead sinks. The Lung belongs to Metal; its nature should sink but instead floats. Why? Because the Liver is full/excess while the Lung is deficient. Thus, stones sink in water, yet there is a floating stone in the South Sea; wood floats in water, yet there is sinking agarwood in the South Sea. The reversal of excess and deficiency is like this. (Yu Tinghong)
For blood strangury and sandy strangury, with astringent and painful urination: grind Fu Shi into powder. Take two qian each time, mixed with raw Licorice Decoction (Gancao Tang). For stone strangury with hematuria: take a handful of Fu Shi, grind into powder. Add three sheng of water and one sheng of vinegar. Boil together until reduced to two sheng. Clarify the liquid. Take one sheng each time. For small intestine hernia, with retraction of the penis and swelling of the scrotum: use equal parts of Hai Fu Shi (Sea Floating Stone) and Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome). Grind into powder. Take two qian each time, taken down with Ginger Juice. For head nodules and brain bi (phlegm nodules occurring at the occiput; those in the center are called Brain Bi, while those on the side are simply Bi): Burn Bai Fu Shi (White Floating Stone) until carbonized (preserving its properties), grind into powder. Add a small amount of Calomel (Qing Fen). Mix with Sesame Oil and apply topically. Do not press with hands; pressing will cause swelling. Alternatively, adding calcined yellow cow dung is particularly effective. It also treats head sores/ulcers.
[Discussion] Di Jin Wan uses Fu Shi to treat hernia. (See *Zhunsheng*) Hernia is considered an evil pathogen occasionally congealed in the Water organs. It seems similar to entrenched diseases that cannot be dispersed immediately. However, it is not originally a chronic entrenched disease. It is merely water qi occasionally congealing, taking the shape of stone but being very light and hollow, still adhering to the floating and gathering nature of Qi. Using Fu Shi to counteract it works because its salty and cold flavor enters the Water organs. It takes advantage of the fact that the congealment occurred accidentally and disperses it by relying on its accidental nature, utilizing the movement of Qi to shift it away. As for treatment...
