Blooms in April with white, fine flowers. Bears fruit in summer and autumn. The fruit resembles a pomegranate but is longer. Its seeds are finely fragmented and covered with white hairs. The taste is extremely astringent. It should be harvested in September or October when the fruit is half-yellow.
If not harvested at this time, it may instead cause diarrhea. The taste is sour and astringent; the qi is neutral and warm. The qi is thin while the flavor is strong, representing Yang within Yin. It primarily treats Spleen deficiency diarrhea (Pi Xie) and dysentery. It stops frequent urination and secures Essence and Qi.
Any condition involving intestinal flooding diarrhea, loss of control over urination and defecation, overflow and slipping of Essence, as well as reckless bleeding and uncontrollable night sweats, all indicate a state of collapse (Tuo). Although it is said that "astringency can arrest sliding" and "consolidation can treat collapse," one must still judge the root and branch, evaluate the sequence of onset, and determine the urgency. (Zhi Yi)
[Discussion] Jin Ying Zi (Cherokee Rose Fruit) has a sour and astringent taste. The transformation of Wood shares characteristics with Metal. The sour taste of Wood arises because Yin cannot quickly reach Yang. The astringent taste of Metal arises because Yang cannot immediately penetrate Yin. These are all due to Qi transformation occurring first but failing to flow smoothly, hence attributed to taste. However, if both Yin and Yang Qi are collapsing... [Text fragment implies exclusion]. Miao's theory states that if diarrhea results from violent purging due to Fire-Heat, or if urinary incontinence and Essence slipping are caused by Yin deficiency with blazing Fire, they are all unsuitable for use.
[Differentiation and Treatment] One should select fruits that are half-yellow, dry them, and crush them into powder for use. People nowadays wait until the fruit is fully red and ripe, extract the juice, and boil it into a paste. The taste becomes sweet, completely losing the astringent quality, thereby losing its true nature. This is a major error.
Jin Ying Gen (Cherokee Rose Root) has the same flavor and properties as the fruit. *Pu Ji Fang* uses it to treat prolapse of the rectum due to Yang syndromes and to expel *Cestodia* (Taenia solium). Take the root growing towards the east, decoct it with glutinous rice in water, and take it on an empty stomach. It produces miraculous effects. Decocting with vinegar can dissolve hard bones (e.g., fish bone impaction).
There are two types of plants: herbaceous and arborescent. In Jiaozhou and Guangzhou, the tree is large enough to embrace with arms; its branches resemble those of Paulownia, leaves resemble walnut leaves, and fruits are as large as fists. Those planted in Jiangnan and north of the Huai River have stems weak like vines, leaves with three points like maple leaves, and fruits as large as peaches. This variety originally came from Southern Barbarian lands and entered China only at the end of the Song Dynasty. Take its seeds, remove the shell, and use the kernel.
The flavor is pungent and hot, slightly toxic. It enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. It is a herb that dispels Wind-Dampness and Cold-Dampness. It obtains the Yang Qi of the earth and further matures under the Qi of Autumn Metal. Pungency can disperse Wind pathogens; Heat can eliminate Cold-Dampness. For those with Wind-Cold-Dampness pathogens in the lower body, it is suitable. (Zhong Chun)
Those with Liver and Kidney deficiency should not use it. All cases of Yin deficiency with blazing Fire, flaccidity (Wei syndrome), and weakness in the lower body are strictly contraindicated. (Zhong Chun)
