Patients with diarrhea and dysentery, if they do not abstain from raw/cold foods, fish/meat, and fatty/greasy items, are equivalent to taking no medicine. (Cited in *Youyou Xinshu* from *Yangsheng Biyong*) (*Liuyao* states: If old stagnation is not cleared, and new food is added, how can the intestines and stomach remain clear? Gradually, blockage occurs, leading to nausea and loss of appetite, resulting in Jin Kou Li (Jin Kou Dysentery).)
A man suffered from severe purulent and bloody dysentery with unbearable pain. He suddenly saw melons soaked in water and felt a strong desire for them. He ate several whole, including the skin, and the purulent and bloody symptoms ceased. People say that dysentery has no fixed form; what kind of statement is this? People only know that dysentery is a deficiency-cold syndrome, treating it with warming, drying, astringing, and blocking methods, believing there are no other techniques; how could they know that wind, summerheat, fire, dampness, dryness, and cold as six pathogenic factors can all cause dysentery? This explains why ice-sweetened melon is effective. (*Zaji Jiumen*) (Note: It also records a case where eating sheep liver cured diarrhea, stating: Dai Ren often said: The Stomach is the sea of water and grain; it must not be deficient or weak. If deficient, all evils will enter. If one craves meat, even if contrary to the disease, allowing small amounts can help induce the intake of broth or gruel. This is a method of flexible adaptation. If one strictly demands bland gruel, the patient becomes displeased and eats less; over time, the disease worsens, damaging life. This is how worldly doctors mislead people.)
Lowering discharge (Xia Li) relies on Stomach Qi as its root. When Stomach Qi loses its ability to generate and nourish, the body rejects foul matter and lacks appetite. However, if the patient desires food, regardless of what it is, and recovery follows upon consumption, this is because Stomach Qi is strong. (*Yitong*) (Note: This theory originates from Dai Ren.)
Treated a woman suffering from dysentery. She was naturally thin and weak, and had been bedridden for a long time. Whenever porridge entered her stomach, she experienced abdominal pain and vomiting, stopping only after expelling all ingested food. Consequently, she could not swallow any solid food for over forty days. Many physicians deemed her condition critical and invited me to consult. I said: The symptoms correspond with the pulse; there is no need to worry. Do not burden the body with medication. It is best to feed her rice water, so that the Stomach constantly receives the qi of grains. After the White Dew solar term, her symptoms should resolve. As predicted, she recovered on schedule. (*Shishan Yi An*)
Post-dysentery Wind (Detailed in the *Li Jie* chapter)
Post-dysentery Rectal Prolapse (Treatment formulas detailed in the *Tuo Gang* chapter). Rectal prolapse refers to the protrusion of the anus. It is mostly caused by deficiency and cold of the Large Intestine following chronic dysentery. The anus is the external manifestation of the Large Intestine. When the Large Intestine is deficient and injured by cold, and during dysentery, straining causes Qi to rush downward, the anus protrudes, hence the name "Rectal Prolapse" (*Tuo Gang*). (*Bing Yuan Lun*)
For lower dysentery accompanied by rectal prolapse, treat primarily with Yang Zang Tang (Nourish Viscera Decoction) adding Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and removing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix). (*Yuan Bing Ji*)
