Grind the above three medicaments into a fine powder. Mash old rice thoroughly and use it to form pills, sized like radish seeds. Take seven pills per dose; adjust to five or three pills based on the patient's body constitution (fat or thin). It is highly advisable to prepare this medicine on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Day); the method for using the medicinal vehicle (Yin) is described later.
For red dysentery (dysentery with pus and blood), mix with honey and swallow with boiling water on an empty stomach. For watery diarrhea (diarrhea with stool resembling water), take with ginger decoction. For spleen deficiency diarrhea (spleen-deficiency type diarrhea), take with ginger decoction, continuing for seven days. After taking any of these medicines, one must fast until noon, then consume half a bowl of stir-fried rice porridge, followed by another half bowl shortly after. If there is heat-toxin in the abdomen, allow it to discharge naturally and stop. Red dysentery is particularly difficult to treat. If one dose does not stop it, boil two taels of fine tea leaves, add two taels of raw honey and one tael of fresh ginger juice. Mix these three ingredients together, add seven pills from the previous prescription, and take on an empty stomach to stop the symptoms. For white dysentery (dysentery with white mucus), mix with brown sugar and swallow with boiling water on an empty stomach. (From *Yi Zong Cui Yan*)
Warming Interior Method: Jiao Ai Wan (Pepper and Mugwort Pill), treating thirty-year chronic dysentery where ingested food is undigested, stools are green or yellow, limbs feel heavy, dizziness and collapse occur upon rising, flesh and bones are emaciated, feet are cold upwards, abdomen feels hot, suffering from muscle cramps, requiring support for movement, and causing infertility due to yin-cold.
* Shu Jiao (Sichuan Pepper) (300 grains)
* Shu Ai Ye (Prepared Artemisia argyi Leaf) (1 jin)
* Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) (3 liang)
* Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite) (2 liang)
* Wu Mei (Dark Plum) (100 pieces)
Sieve the pepper, ginger, and mugwort into fine powder. Steam the plums with one dou of rice until cooked, remove pits, add the ginger and pepper powder, and pound together for three thousand strokes. Mix with honey to form pills the size of *Celastrus orbiculatus* seeds. Take ten pills, three times daily. If not cured, increase to twenty pills, and add one sheng of Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome). (From *Qian Jin Fang*)
He Li Le San (Terminalia Powder), treating white dysentery with abdominal pain, chest and diaphragm fullness/stuffiness, and inability to eat.
* He Li Le (Terminalia chebula Fruit) (1.5 liang, roasted, use peel)
* Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) (3 liang)

* Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) (1 liang, processed, crushed)
* Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) (2 liang, remove rough bark, coat with ginger juice, roast until fragrant)
* Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) (1 liang, bran-roasted until slightly yellow)
* Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 liang) - *Note: Text says Bai Fu Ling, but standard formula often uses Bai Zhu or both. Translating as written: Bai Fu Ling (Poria)* (1 liang)
* Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (0.5 liang, roasted until slightly red, crushed)
* Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) (1 liang, crushed, slightly roasted)
Pulverize the above herbs finely. Take two qian at any time, mixed with rice drink. (From *Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang*)
Mu Xiang San (Vladimiria Powder), treating chronic red and white dysentery that does not stop, with umbilical and abdominal pain.
* Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) (3 fen)
* Fu Zi (Aconitum Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (1.5 liang, roasted until cracked, peel and navel removed)
* Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) (1 liang, remove roots, slightly roasted)
* Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) (1 liang, crushed, slightly roasted)
* Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) (0.5 liang, soaked in water seven times, dried until slightly yellow)
* Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) (3 liang, remove rough bark, roast with ginger juice until fragrant)
Pulverize and sieve the above herbs. Take three qian per dose. Boil in one zhong of water until reduced to five fen, strain, and take warm at any time. (Ibid.) (Note: The Wu Zhu Yu Wan for chronic cold dysentery and Suo Sha Wan for cold qi watery diarrhea are similar to this formula and are not listed here.)
Burn Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) on fire until blackened but not ashed. Cover with a porcelain bowl, let cool, and grind into powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with rice drink. This is miraculous for bloody dysentery. Zhang Zhongjing said: "When there is cold in the Small Intestine, the person experiences heaviness in the anus and bloody stools." This can be used to treat it. (From *Yi Zong Bi Jian*)
Treating dysentery that has stopped but with unbearable abdominal pain.
Powder equal parts of high-quality Liang Jiang (Galangal) and Shao Yao (Peony Root). Mix with ginger-salt rice soup and take. (From *Jing Yan Liang Fang*)
My clan nephew Liang Quan suffered from bloody dysentery with abdominal pain, tenesmus (urgent desire to defecate with heavy sensation in rectum), and straining. The local physicians treated him with Xiang Lian Wan (Fragrant Coptis Pill) and Huang Qin Shao Yao Tang (Scutellaria and Peony Decoction) without success; his abdominal pain worsened. His face was red and lips bright red, as if painted with vermilion. His shouting terrified the neighbors. The Taixue student Ning Yu invited me to examine him. His six pulses were flooding (Hong Da). I prescribed Liu Qian of raw and prepared Shao Yao (White Peony Root), Er Qian of raw and prepared Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Yi Qian each of Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Er Qian of Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root), and two Jujubes. Decoct in water and drink. After finishing the medicine, he lay down quietly. The Taixue student asked someone to observe the patient. The report came back: Last night, dysentery decreased by five-tenths, pain decreased by seven-tenths, and by morning he had drunk half a cup of porridge. The Taixue student happily asked me: "His face is red, lips red, pulse large, and he passes only blood; all symptoms belong to Heat. Yet you prescribe Hot agents. I was very worried and slept poorly all night. Now the illness is halved, and there is hope. What formula do you use today?" I said: "The dosage is slightly smaller than yesterday, but the formula remains the same." The Taixue student said: "I am confused. Why do you view Heat as Cold?" I said: "You know that a Large pulse indicates Heat, but do not know that Large yet Forceless indicates Deficiency-Cold. The red face and lips are due to Cold in the Middle Jiao preventing Fire from descending; this is Yin Excess repelling Yang. If it were true Heat abdominal pain, the patient would lie supine and relaxed. In Cold patterns, the patient curls up. The blood passed is dark/dull. These are all false Heat; the Cold pattern is clear. The previous formula, when taken again, completely cured him." (Excerpt from *Chi Shui Xuan Zhu*)
An old woman developed dysentery after eating and getting angry, with tenesmus. This belongs to Spleen Qi sinking. I gave a large dose of Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), adding Fu Zi (Aconite), Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg), and Wei Mu Xiang (Roasted Vladimiria) each 1 qian, Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia) 5 fen, Gu Zhi (Psoralea Fruit) and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry) each 1.5 qian. After two doses, all symptoms receded, except for lower abdominal distension and stuffiness, which indicated Liver Qi stagnation in the Spleen. I prescribed Tiao Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Regulate the Middle and Boost Qi Decoction), adding Fu Zi (Aconite) and Mu Xiang (Vladimiria) 5 fen each. After four doses, she recovered. Later, she felt a salty taste in her mouth, indicating Kidney Deficiency with Water overflowing. I prescribed Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia), and she recovered instantly after two doses. (From *Nei Ke Zheng Zhai*)
Astringent Methods: Treating heat-toxin causing passage of black blood, severe internal twisting pain, defecating over a hundred times a day, with breathlessness approaching death.

* Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite) (3 liang each)
* Fu Zi (Aconitum Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (1 liang)
Chop the above eight medicaments. Boil in one dou of water until five sheng remain. Divide into five doses. On July 13th of the Zhenguan era, I suddenly contracted this heat-toxin dysentery. By the 15th, my life was nearly gone. I prepared this prescription; upon ingestion, the condition stabilized. (From *Qian Jin Fang*)
*Qian Jin Yue Ling* treats red and white dysentery regardless of cold or heat. Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite), Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) (3 liang each). Grind into powder. Take two qian bi with drink, twice daily.

* Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (1.5 liang)
Chop the above ten medicaments. Boil in one dou two sheng of water. First boil Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) to obtain nine sheng. Add other herbs and boil to obtain two sheng. Divide into three doses. If pus is present, add Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) 3 liang. If vomiting occurs, add Ju Pi (Citrus Peel) 3 liang. (From *Qian Jin Fang*) (Note: It is suspicious that Bai Zhu is boiled first despite not being the main herb, and the quantity of one sheng suggests it might be a typo for Jing Mi (Rice).)
Duan Li Tang (Stop Dysentery Decoction), treating hidden water under the chest and heart.
* Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) (1 sheng)
* Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (5 liang)
* Fu Ling (Poria)

* Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) (1 liang, remove roots, slightly roasted)
* Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) (1 liang)
* Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) (1 liang, crushed, slightly roasted)
* Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark) (1 liang, crushed)
* Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite) (1 liang)

* Ying Su Ke (Poppy Capsule) (remove stem cover, honey-roasted, 3 liang 6 qian)
Crush into coarse powder. Take two large qian per dose. Boil in one and a half cups of water until eight tenths remain. Strain and take warm before meals. Elderly, pregnant women, and children with acute diarrhea should take this urgently for immediate cure. Avoid alcohol, wheat products, raw/cold foods, fish, seafood, grease, and oil. If viscera are slippery with nocturnal diarrhea persisting, add three slices of processed Fu Zi (Aconite) and decoct. This medicine has miraculous effects, too numerous to describe. (From *He Ji Ju Fang*)

When damp-heat causes dysentery, after several days, if abdominal pain ceases, and pus and blood pass in waves, accompanied by cold hands and feet and impending depletion of Yuan Qi, this indicates Fire transforming into Cold and Yin exhaustion. The ancients said "Dysentery has no stopping method." However, dysentery varies. Some early cases require stopping; chronic cases may not. One cannot blindly ignore the "no stopping" rule. Not stopping leads to difficult chronic recovery; stopping may cause unpredictable changes. Thus, dysentery should not be lightly stopped. But in such cases, stopping is necessary. Abdominal pain indicates pathogen; no pain means no pathogen. Pus and blood passing without pain indicate Qi depletion and impending collapse. Cold hands and feet indicate Qi depletion failing to circulate. Observe the tongue: extreme Heat makes it dry; extreme Cold makes it slippery. Heat turning to Cold results in a slippery tongue. One must first stop the dysentery to save the collapse, not purge to attack the pathogen. Formula: Zhi Tuo Jiu Li Tang (Stop Collapse Save Dysentery Decoction): Ren Shen (Ginseng) 2 liang, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) 2 liang, Bai Shao (White Peony) 1 liang, Rou Gui (Cinnamon) 3 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 1 liang, Gan Cao (Licorice) 2 qian, Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite) powder 3 qian. Decoct in water. One dose warms hands/feet; two doses stop pus/blood; three doses cure dysentery. Reduce all herbs by half, remove Chi Shi Zhi, take ten more doses to restore Yuan Qi. Such dysentery is rare; do not rigidly apply this formula. I record this treatment to save one in ten thousand. (From *Bian Zheng Lu*)
A Fu Rong (Opium), transmitted from Tian Fang Country, specifically treats chronic dysentery and all cold patterns. Take a pill the size of a soybean, dissolve in warm water on an empty stomach. Avoid garlic, onions, and sauces. If heat/thirst exists, dissolve with honey water. For children, use a pill the size of millet. (From *Yi Lin Ji Yao*)
Xia Pian Xiang Lian Wan (Camphor Fragrant Coptis Pill), treating chronic dysentery unresponsive to other medicines.
* Chuan Huang Lian (Sichuan Coptis Rhizome) (4 liang, stir-fried with 4 liang Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia) until purple, discard Evodia)
* Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) (8 fen)
* Xia Pian (Camphor) (2 fen)
Grind into powder. Form water pills the size of *Celastrus* seeds. Take thirty pills per dose with plain water. (From *Huo Ren Xin Tong*) *Ru Men* Chen Mi Hu Wan (Chen Rice Paste Pill), size of mung beans, take 20-30 pills. This formula is for critical cases with incontinence unresponsive to other prescriptions. Quickly decoct Lotus Seeds (Lian Zi) in water to send down the pill, cover with blankets to sleep. Miraculous effect.
Tonifying Methods (Post-illness Regulation): Treating emptiness in abdomen after severe purging, deficiency fullness in chest, inability to eat.
* Shao Yao (Peony Root)
* Gan Cao (Licorice Root)
* Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) (1 liang each)
* Hou Po (Magnolia Bark)
* Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) (3 liang each)
* Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (5 liang)
* Gui Xin (Cinnamon Heart) (3 liang)
Chop the above seven medicaments. Boil in seven sheng of water until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. Two doses are best. (From *Qian Jin Fang*)
Someone suffered chronic dysentery, passing red and white, or pure white, or pure red, unresponsive to hundreds of medicines. Chronic illness and excessive medication using harsh drugs have disturbed Zang Qi, making it hard to cure. Shi Zai Zhi used light, clear, harmonizing Qi medicines and achieved cure, verified repeatedly. Formula: Honey-roasted Ying Su Ke (Poppy Capsule), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Roasted Gan Cao (Licorice), Huang Qin (Scutellaria) in equal parts. Grind to powder. Take two qian. Boil in one cup of water with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), Da Zao (Jujube), and Wu Mei (Dark Plum) 0.5 fen. Decoct to eight tenths. Take warm at any time. (From *Yi Shuo*) (Note: *Shi Zai Zhi Fang* is currently unavailable for verification.)
Mr. Ye suffered from sticky dysentery (Li Ji), with severe urgency, fitting Cheng Qi pattern. I said: The Qi Kou pulse is deficient. Although the body appears solid, the face is yellowish-white. This is likely due to overeating damaging the Stomach. Better to endure hardship for a day or two. I gave tonics like Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes), Chen Pi (Citrus Peel), Shao Yao (Peony) for over ten doses. After three days, Stomach Qi recovered slightly. Then gave Cheng Qi Tang (Descending Qi Decoction) for two doses, and he stabilized. Had I not first repaired the Stomach Qi damage before abruptly using Cheng Qi, I fear post-recovery weakness would be inevitable. (From *Ge Zhi Yu Lun*)
Zheng Yishi from Pujiang suffered from sticky dysentery. Suddenly fainted one night, eyes rolled up, urine incontinence, and sweating. Dai Li diagnosed a large pulse regardless of position, and said: This is Yin Deficiency with sudden Yang collapse, likely caused by drinking and intercourse after illness. I can cure it. Urgently ordered preparation of Ren Shen Gao (Ginseng Paste) and moxa on Qi Hai (CV6). Soon hands moved, then lips moved. After three drinks of Ginseng Paste, he revived. He consumed several jin of Ginseng Paste thereafter, and the disease was cured. (Recorded by Dai Li in *Biography of Weng Danxi*)
Shen Gui Shao Yao Tang (Ginseng, Angelica, and Peony Decoction), treating dysentery lasting 10-20 days, with excessive loss and non-stop passage. Use this to regulate Qi and Blood for self-healing.
* Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (1 qian)
* Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) (wine-washed, 2 qian)
* Fu Ling (Poria)
* Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (half amount)
* Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) (7 fen)
* Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome) (stir-fried)
* Chen Pi (Citrus Peel) (half amount each)
* Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (5 fen)
Decoct one dose with two Dark Plums (Wu Mei), a bundle of Rush Pith (Deng Cao), and seven Lotus Seeds (Lian Zi). Drink warm. (From *Hui Chun*) *Shou Shi* Bai Zhu He Zhong Tang (Atractylodes Harmonizing Middle Decoction): For dysentery with mostly white stool, new or chronic, or unresolved after purging. Remove Ren Shen, Sha Ren, Shan Yao from the above formula. Add Huang Qin (Scutellaria), Huang Lian (Coptis), Mu Xiang (Vladimiria).
Fei Chou treated the son of Zhu Yuanchen, who suffered from five-color dysentery for over 20 days, with chest fullness and inability to eat porridge/drinks, unresponsive to medicine. Two other doctors were consulted: one used Da Huang (Rhubarb), the other Ren Shen (Ginseng). Zhu Yuanchen could not decide and entrusted me. I said: The one using Da Huang did so because of fullness and large pulse; the one using Ren Shen did so because of chronic dysentery and anorexia. Chronic dysentery with anorexia makes Da Huang absolutely unsuitable; chest fullness makes Ren Shen difficult to administer immediately. I propose using Fu Long Gan (Dragon's House Earth) as the sovereign herb to warm the Earth organ, decocting thickly to replace water. Decoct Chao Bai Zhu (Stir-fried Atractylodes), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Licorice), Guang Huo Xiang (Patchouli), Mu Xiang (Vladimiria), Chao Wu Mei (Stir-fried Dark Plum). One dose reduced dysentery and increased appetite; two doses stopped it. No further medicine needed; he recovered through regulation. (From *Yi Tong*)
Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction): For dysentery cured but with severe Qi and Blood deficiency. This formula is indicated. (From *Yi Fang Kao*)
Post-dysentery tonification: Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus 1.5 qian Chen Pi (Citrus Peel), i.e., Yi Gong San (Extraordinary Ability Powder). If averse to sweetness, use Sheng Liao Ping Wei San (Raw Material Leveling the Stomach Powder) plus 0.5 qian each of Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Fu Ling (Poria). (From *Yao Jue*)
Dietary Therapy Prescriptions: Crucian carp sashimi (Kuai) treats red and white dysentery. (*Ben Cao* Tang Ben Xian Appendix). Sashimi treats intestinal disharmony of water and grain. (Ibid. Ri Hua Zi). Treating chronic red and white dysentery: Crucian Carp Sashimi Prescription. Take one jin of fresh crucian carp, remove scales and fins, cut finely into sashimi. Mix with minced garlic sauce and eat. (From *Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang*) (Note: *Shi Zhai* has a prescription of crucian carp wrapped in alum paper and roasted, not listed here.)
Dysentery with closed mouth (Jin Kou), unable to eat for days, vomiting everything, severely emaciated. Prepare black-bone chicken normally, boil in clear water, and drink the juice. After one day of consumption, Stomach Qi opens, dysentery stops, and life is saved. This is a strange person's prescription. (From *Dan Liao* citing *Zeng Pin Fang*)
Lai Fu Tang (Radish Decoction), treating men, women, and children with red and white dysentery. Blood follows Qi movement; Qi stagnation causes blood to move recklessly. Only radish roots and leaves resolve stagnation, harmonize the middle, and promote bowel/intestinal Qi flow. When I lived in Jinling, I used this to treat people with universal efficacy, saving hundreds.
* Luo Bo Gen Ye (Radish Root and Leaves) (Wind-dried during winter of the previous year for use)
Take any amount. Boil until soft, leave exposed overnight. Next morning on an empty stomach, drink the juice and eat the leaves. (From *Yi Hui*)
Jin Long Tang (Golden Dragon Decoction), treating dysentery with closed mouth, critical condition approaching death.
