At the hours of Shen (15:00–17:00) and Si (09:00–11:00), start with Bing Yin; on Yi days and Geng days, start with Wu Yin; on Bing days and Xin days, start with Geng Yin; on Ding days and Ren days, start with Ren Yin, following sequentially; on Wu days and Gui days, fix at Jia Yin. When the Five Gates (referring to the Nine Palace numerical system in Linggui Bafa) align, it signifies a cycle (Yuanhui).
On Jia days and Ji days, the number is ten for the Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei hours; on Yi days and Geng days, the number is nine for the Shen and You hours; on Ding days and Ren days, the number is eight for the Yin and Mao hours; on Wu days and Gui days, the number is seven for the Si and Hai hours; for Bing days and Xin days, the number is also seven for the Zi and Chou hours. The numerical values for the daily Earthly Branches and Heavenly Stems can thus be known.
On Jia days and Ji days, the number is nine for the Zi and Wu hours, which are suitable for use; on Yi days and Geng days, the number is eight for the Chou and Wei hours, without doubt; on Bing days and Xin days, the number is seven for the Yin and Shen hours; on Ding days and Ren days, the number is six for the Mao and You hours, which must be known; on Wu days and Gui days, the number is five for the Chen and Xu hours; for Si days and Hai days, add four. Sum these numbers. For Yang days, divide by nine; for Yin days, divide by six. If there is a remainder, needle the acupoint corresponding to that remainder.
[Diagram of Linggui Bafa]
For example, on the day of Jia Zi at the hour of Wu Chen: within the daily stems and branches, Jia yields 1, and Zi yields 7. Within the hourly stems and branches, Wu yields 5, and Chen yields 5. The total is 27. This is a Yang day, so divide by 9. 27 divided by 9 leaves no remainder, but traditionally in this context, if the sum is exactly divisible or based on specific calculation methods yielding a remainder of 9 (as per the text's logic "remainder is 9"), it corresponds to Li (Fire) trigram, which is Lieque (LU-7). *Note: The source text calculates 27/9=3 rem 0, but states remainder 9 corresponds to Li/Lieque. Standard Linggui Bafa usually maps remainder 9 to Li/Lieque.*
Again, for the day of Yi Chou at the hour of Ren Wu: within the daily stems and branches, Yi yields 9, and Chou yields 10. Within the hourly stems and branches, Ren yields 6, and Wu yields 9. The total is 34. This is a Yin day, so divide by 6. 34 divided by 6 leaves a remainder of 4. Remainder 4 corresponds to Xun (Wind) trigram, which is Zulinqi (GB-41). All other cases follow this pattern.
On Ren days and Shen hours, Gongsun (PC-6) is located in the Qian palace; Bing days reside in the Gen palace; on Wu days, Linqi (Zu Linqi, GB-41) arises from Kan water; Geng days belong to Waiguan (TE-5), connected to Zhen; on Xin days, Houxi (SI-3) is placed in the Xun trigram; on Ji and Gui days, Shenmai (BL-62) transmits to Kun; Ji earth, Lieque (LU-7) is in the South Li palace; Ding days reside in Zhaohai (KI-6), completing the Dui metal palace.
This method uses only the Heavenly Stem of the current day as an example. For instance, on Jia or Yi days at the hour of Wu Chen, select the hour of Wu Wu’s Zulinqi (GB-41); at Ji Si hour, select Lieque (LU-7); at Geng Wu hour, select Waiguan (TE-5). All others follow this pattern.
I believe the methods of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels share common principles. The aforementioned Linggui Bafa involves the principles of Yang Nine, Yin Six, Stem Ten Changes, and Opening/Closing. When applied at the appropriate time, it yields swift effects. The later Feiteng Bafa was also taught by enlightened masters, so I dare not discard it, and have recorded it previously for the benefit of learners.
