The Kidney is the organ of Water. When invaded by Cold pathogenic factors, the Water becomes cold and freezes into ice, resulting in coldness and pain in the lower abdomen (Shaofu Juetong). This condition is primarily treated with Kaiyang Tang (Open Yang Decoction).
Kaiyang Tang (Self-made Formula)
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 8 fen)
Guzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, 1.5 qian)
Yizhi (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus, 1 qian)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian)
Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 2 qian)
Wuyao (Linderae Radix, 2 qian)
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 5 fen)
Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian)
Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 1 qian)
Fuling (Poria, 2 qian)
Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices)
This formula shares ingredients with Wenquan Tang (Hot Spring Decoction) from the "Bloating Section," specifically Ginger, Fuzi, Guzhi, Danggui, Duzhong, Wuyao, Muxiang, Qingpi, and Chenpi. However, it excludes Xiaohui (Foeniculi Fructus), Hetaorou (Juglandis Semen), and Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), while adding Yizhiren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) and Fuling (Poria). Wenquan Tang treats pain in the waist and thighs; whereas this formula uses Yizhiren to assist Fuzi and Guzhi in tonifying Mingmen Fire (Gate of Life Fire), and uses Fuling to assist Ginger and Fuzi in eliminating damp-water accumulation. The Stomach is the sea of grain and food. Pain due to excess conditions should be treated with methods of resolving stagnation or purging, as detailed in the discussion on Jie Xiong Syndrome (Chest Binding Syndrome). For pain in the epigastrium caused by Stomach Qi deficiency, Yangwei Tang (Nourish Stomach Decoction) is primarily used.
Yangwei Tang (Self-made Formula)
Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 qian)
Fuling (Poria, 2 qian)
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian)
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen)
Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 3 qian)
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 2 qian)
Dangshen (Codonopsis Radix, 4 qian)
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 5 fen)
Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 1 qian)
Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian)
Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 2 pieces)
Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices)
This formula is derived from Xiangsha Liujun Zi Tang (Aucklandia and Amomi Six Gentlemen Decoction) by removing Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and adding Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). Huangqi tonifies the Qi of the Spleen and Lung; Shanyao tonifies Spleen Yin; Baishao nourishes Spleen Blood. The inclusion of only one sour-cold herb transforms the entire formula into a harmonious and neutral nature. The Spleen and Stomach are like husband and wife; when nourishing the Stomach, one must attend to the Spleen. This represents a typical approach to treating Stomach deficiency throughout history. (Annotation by Zuyi)
For Stomach Qi deficiency and cold, characterized by an inability to receive food, vomiting, and pain, Guipu Tang (Cinnamon and Magnolia Bark Decoction) is primarily used.
Guipu Tang (Self-made Formula)
Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 4 fen)
N Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 qian)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian)
Fuling (Poria, 2 qian)
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian)
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 5 fen)
Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 1 qian)
Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 qian, stir-fried with wine)
Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian)
Yujin (Curcumae Longae Radix, 2 qian)
Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 2 pieces)
Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices)
This formula takes Wenzhong Pingwei San (Warm Middle and Calm Stomach Powder) from the "Bloating Section," substituting Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) for Baizhu/Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) for Paojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum), and Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) for Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). It retains N Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), but removes Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Xiangyuan (Cydoniae Fructus), and Guya (Setariae Fructus Germinatus), adding Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Hongzao (Jujubae Fructus), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Fuling (Poria). The former contains more resolving herbs, while this one contains more warming herbs and also attends to the Blood level. (Annotation by Zuyi)
Guiding Tingtong San (Cinnamon and Clove Pain-Relieving Powder)
Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 5 fen)
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 1 qian)
Chengqie (Vaccarii Fructus, 1.5 qian)
Cishi (Magnetitum, 3 qian)
Grind into an extremely fine powder and divide into twelve doses. Take with human milk and roasted red dates while hot. Rural farmers, during summer and autumn seasons, often drink large amounts of cold water after labor-induced thirst, leading to heart and abdominal pain unresponsive to other medicines. This formula uses Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), and Chengqie (Vaccarii Fructus) to warm the interior, and Cishi (Magnetitum) to anchor and retain the medicinal power, preventing it from dissipating too quickly. It can be taken by men, women, old, and young alike. (Added and assisted by Grandson's son-in-law, Xu Xiangren)
