(Yan Yonghe) Use Qingpi (Qingpi, Amentotum Citri Reticulatae), Houpo (Houpo, Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Chaihu (Chaihu, Radix Bupleuri), along with Huangqin (Huangqin, Radix Scutellariae), Banxia (Banxia, Rhizoma Pinelliae), Gancao (Ganzao, Radix Glycyrrhizae), Fuling (Fuling, Poria), and Baizhu (Baizhu, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae). Add Caoguo (Caoguo, Fructus Tsaoko) and decoct with Shengjiang (Shengjiang, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). This formula is excellent for Yang malaria with predominant heat. [Qingpi, Houpo (vinegar-fried), Chaihu, Huangqin, Banxia (ginger-processed), Gancao (honey-fried), Fuling, Baizhu (earth-fried), Caoguo (roasted), decocted with Shengjiang. If the malaria does not cease, add Changshan (Changshan, Radix Dichroae) fried in wine, 1 qian, and Wumei (Wumei, Fructus Mume), two pieces; if there is severe thirst, add Maidong (Maidong, Radix Ophiopogonis) and Zhimu (Zhimu, Rhizoma Anemarrhenae). Malaria, also known as Pi Han (Spleen Cold), is mostly due to injury of the Spleen and Stomach. This formula is a variation derived from Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Chest Bi Decoction) with modifications, based on formulas that warm the Spleen. Qingpi and Chaihu soothe the Liver and break stagnation; Houpo and Banxia calm the Stomach and dispel phlegm; Huangqin and Fuling clear heat and promote dampness drainage; Baizhu and Gancao tonify the Spleen and regulate the middle; Caoguo disperses accumulated cold in the Taiyin channel, eliminates phlegm, and arrests malaria.]
(Liu Caochuang) Chenpi (Chenpi, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Shaoyao (Shaoyao, Radix Paeoniae Alba), Fangfeng (Fangfeng, Radix Saposhnikoviae), and Baizhu are decocted or made into pills according to discretion. [Baizhu (earth-fried) 3 liang, Shaoyao (wine-fried) 4 liang, Chenpi (fried) 0.5 liang, Fangfeng 1 liang; either decocted or made into pills; for chronic diarrhea, add Shengma (Shengma, Rhizoma Cimicifugae).] Tonify Earth to drain Wood, regulating the Liver and Spleen. (Chenpi regulates Qi and tonifies the Spleen; Fangfeng and Shaoyao drain Wood to benefit Earth.) If it is treated as food retention injury, the treatment will be mistaken. (Wu Hegao said: Abdominal pain caused by food retention is relieved after defecation; now, although there is diarrhea, the pain does not decrease, so it is attributed to the failure of Earth and the invasion of Wood.)
Eight Main Formulas, Five Supplementary Formulas
(Zhang Zhongjing) Use Dahuang (Dahuang, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), accompanied by Zhishi (Zhishi, Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Fuling, Banxia, and Shaoyao. Decoct with Shengjiang and Dazao (Dazao, Fructus Jujubae); this addresses both exterior and interior syndromes, employing the ingenious method of attacking internally while repelling externally. [Chaihu 8 liang, used when exterior symptoms persist and interior symptoms are urgent. Chaihu releases the exterior; Dahuang and Zhishi attack the interior; Huangqin clears heat; Shaoyao astringes Yin; Banxia harmonizes the Stomach and stops vomiting; Shengjiang and Dazao harmonize Ying and Wei. Note: This formula and the next treat Shaoyang-Yangming syndrome, while the latter treats Taiyin-Yangming syndrome, indicating differences.] The meaning of adding Xiaosha (Xiaosha, Natrii Sulfas) to Chaihu is similar. (Xiao Chai Hu Tang added with 6 liang of Xiaosha, Zhang Zhongjing's formula.) There is also Guizhi (Guizhi, Ramulus Cinnamomi) plus Dahuang Tang. (In Guizhi Tang, add 1 liang of Dahuang and 3 liang of Shaoyang, treating cases where Taiyang disease was mistakenly purged, transferred to Taiyin, presenting with severe abdominal pain.)
