Whenever children suffer from eye diseases, it is caused by heat-toxin. There are many prescriptions, but among them, the eye disease caused by smallpox (Bancuang) is the most malignant syndrome. If a child has this condition, it is due to improper care during illness or lack of restraint in diet. Or, immediately after the smallpox sores have just healed, toxic, cooling, or heating foods are consumed, causing heat-toxin to enter between the Liver and Kidney meridians, resulting in swelling, pain, photophobia, aversion to sunlight, excessive discharge making eyes difficult to open, etc. "Toxin" refers to roasted, fried, pickled, preserved, or oil-fried foods, as well as white eggs, yellow cattle, sows, rice vinegar, dried fish, sauces, chicken, mutton, goose, duck, shrimp, crab, fish, turtle, and other pungent and fishy foods, including flying birds with strong odors; all these contribute to the blame. Once the heat subsides and pain stops, if white nebulae (corneal opacities) have formed in the eyes, whether in one or both eyes, treatment should be initiated promptly according to the severity.
For treating early-stage eye complications from smallpox in children, characterized by painful and gritty sensations, photophobia, aversion to sunlight, and frequent tearing, or when white nebulae are beginning to form, the efficacious Shenxiao Touguan San (Miraculous Efficacy Opening-Barrier Powder) is recommended.
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. Apply a small amount insufflated into the nostrils frequently after meals. This can be used for various symptoms.
Treating eye complications from smallpox is easier if managed within 100 days; if delayed, the qi becomes fixed and difficult to treat. The highly effective Dianming Gao (Brightening Eye Ointment) formula:
Rubus root (found everywhere, growing near roadside pillars, five to seven chi high).
Dig up the roots from the soil, wash them clean, pound them to extract starch, clarify and filter until fine, then dry in the sun. Mix with honey and apply a small amount to the white nebulae to allow them to dissipate naturally. Apply two to three times daily.
For early-stage pediatric eye conditions presenting as millet-like protrusions that appear and disappear, gradually enlarging and invading the cornea with diminished vision, the exquisite Lixiao Gao (Instantly Dissolving Ointment) formula:
Snow-white salt (raw ground, a small amount, using clean utensils).
Dip a large rush pith in the salt, gently hold the eyelid, and apply to the millet-like protrusions. Three to five applications yield results. Do not let the child be frightened; there will be no pain nor obstruction. Frequent use is safe and effective.
For pediatric malnutrition-related eye erosion (Gan Shi Yan), where eyelids remain closed, photophobia and aversion to sunlight persist, and upon opening, the vision is blurred like an internal cataract, Sheng Gan Dihuang Tang (Raw Rehmannia Decoction) should be taken:
Sheng Gan Di Huang (Raw Dried Rehmanniae Radix), Shu Gan Di Huang (Prepared Dried Rehmanniae Radix) (each 1 liang, washed clean); Maidong Zi (Ophiopogonis Fructus, heart removed, 0.5 liang); Chuan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 fen); Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, soaked overnight in rice water, stir-fried with bran, weighed at 1 fen); Xingren (Apricot Seed, blanched, skin and tip removed, stir-fried with bran until red); Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix); Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried); Chi Shaoyao (Red Peony Root) (each 1 fen).
Chop the herbs. For each dose, take 1 da qian (approx. 3-5g), add a small cup of water, include 7 black soybeans, decoct until the beans are cooked. Strain and drink warm.
