Once pregnancy is confirmed, a small piece of cloth, six to seven inches wide and long, should be used. Depending on the woman's fatness or thinness, it should be wrapped around the waist horizontally about two times, and only removed when labor begins. Even if there are false contractions (Shi Teng), it should not be removed. This has two benefits: first, since the fetus is not yet fully formed, this support makes the lower back stronger, preventing injury from sudden movements from disturbing the fetus; second, keeping the abdomen slightly constricted means that when it is finally released at term, the sudden expansion makes turning easier.
During pregnancy, sleeping positions should alternate between left and right sides; one should not always sleep on one side. This allows the fetus to move freely and become accustomed to its limbs, making delivery through the midline easier.
Diet must be cautious. Negligence regarding dietary taboos can easily harm the fetus. Generally, food should be light and bland rather than rich and heavy; clear and mild rather than turbid; sweet and neutral rather than pungent and hot; warming and tonifying rather than dispersing. The variety of foods cannot be exhaustively listed; the key is to choose according to the nature of the food at hand.
Regarding matters of propriety and taboo: excessive emotions and desires, mental exertion, extreme cold or heat, climbing high or going low, changing rooms or moving beds, entering the room of a lying-in woman, visiting mourning households, entering crowded places, rising early or sleeping late, using folk remedies by women, and taking prescriptions from itinerant doctors should all be avoided.
It is advisable to take medicine regularly. Pregnant women often suffer from impaired spleen transportation and transformation. If the spleen fails to transport, dampness arises; if dampness arises, heat generates. Therefore, herbs that tonify the spleen and dry dampness are indispensable. Moreover, the fetus relies on Qi and Blood for nourishment. If the mother's Qi and Blood are insufficient, blood-tonifying and Qi-regulating herbs are necessary to calm the fetus. The essential formulas are listed below.
An Tai San (Calming the Fetus Powder)
Take several doses monthly during pregnancy.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 6 fen), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 6 fen), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 6 fen), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 6 fen).
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 qian), E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla, stir-fried with clam powder, 1 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, 3 fen).
Take after meals. If abdominal pain occurs, add Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 5 fen) and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus, 5 fen). If there is emotional depression or anger, add Zi Su (Perillae Folium, 5 fen) and Xiang Fu (Cyperii Rhizoma, 5 fen) to calm the fetal Qi.
Jin Gui Dang Gui Wan (Dang Gui Pill from the Golden Cabinet)
Can be taken regularly during pregnancy.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 4 liang), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 4 liang), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 4 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 4 liang).
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang), E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla, 2 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 liang), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus, 5 qian).
Grind into powder, make pills with wheat paste. Take 60 pills per dose, swallowed with rice water on an empty stomach. This formula nourishes blood and clears heat, tonifies the spleen and dries dampness, nourishes blood and calms the fetus, regulates Qi and relieves pain, and removes fetal toxins. It facilitates easy delivery and healthy fetal development.
Da Sheng Tang (Decoction for Reaching Birth)
Take several doses after the ninth month of pregnancy.
Quan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed, 1.5 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 6 fen), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, wine-soaked overnight, 6 fen), Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba, avoid iron vessels), Dong Kui Zi (Abutilonis Semen, stir-fried and ground), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried, 1 qian), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen, stir-fried and ground), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, bran-stir-fried, 5 fen), Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium, 4 fen), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, 3 fen), Guang Mu Xiang (Costi Rhizoma, avoid fire, grind into powder and mix, 3 fen), Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 1 slice).
Take after meals. If abdominal pain occurs, add Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 5 fen) and Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 5 fen).
Tai Chan Bao Ming Fang (Fetal and Obstetric Life-Preserving Formula, also known as Bao Chan Wu You Fang)
Quan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1.5 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Sheng Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 8 fen), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica, 8 fen), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-stir-fried, 1.2 qian), Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, vinegar-stir-fried), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, ginger juice-stir-fried, 7 fen), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, bran-stir-fried, 6 fen), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, wine-soaked, 1.4 qian), Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, remove heart and grind, 1 qian), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 5 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen).
Add three slices of fresh ginger, decoct in two cups of water until reduced to eight-tenths. Take warm. Decoct the dregs again with one cup of water until reduced to six-tenths, and take again. This formula specifically treats obstetric conditions. Before birth, regardless of the month, if fetal Qi is accidentally injured, causing lower back or abdominal pain, or threatening miscarriage, one dose cures it. A second dose ensures complete safety. For full-term delivery with failure of the pubic symphysis bones to open (Jiao Gu Bu Kai), transverse presentation, or breech presentation, it cures immediately. (Marginal note: Zhou Xuzhong said: Yang opens and Yin closes, which is natural law. Failure of the pubic symphysis bones to open indicates extreme Yin. One must add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) to promote Yang harmony; otherwise, Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), being pure Yin ash, serves only as a guide for pregnancy.) This formula saves lives in emergencies. Usually, no more than two doses are needed, and it has proven miraculous repeatedly. Do not underestimate it; ensure authentic herbs prepared and weighed accurately according to the prescription. It is forbidden after childbirth.
Jia Wei Xiong Gui Tang (Modified Xiong Gui Decoction)
Treats failure of the pubic symphysis bones to open due to deficiency of Yin Qi. This formula is miraculous.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 7 qian), Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted and ground, 6 qian), Fu Ren Fa (Human Hair, size of an egg, roasted on tile until pure).
Decoct in two bowls of water until reduced to one bowl. Add Zi Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 1 qian) to the decoction and take.
Fo Shou San (Buddha's Hand Powder)
Treats all types of dystocia.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 6 qian).
Decoct with seven parts water and three parts wine. For transverse or breech presentation, or dead fetus in utero, add one box of black horse soybeans (Hei Ma Dou), stir-fry until black, put them hot into water, add half a portion of child urine (Tong Bian), and decoct. Drink the upper liquid first, then take another dose shortly after for effect.
Ping Wei San (Peaceful Stomach Powder)
Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, ginger juice-stir-fried, 3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted, 1.2 qian).
For families with pregnant women, prepare two or three doses of Sheng Hua Tang in advance near the end of pregnancy. When the membranes rupture, quickly decoct one dose. After the baby is born, before eating, give it to the mother. The remaining two doses should be decocted and taken immediately. Whether for normal delivery or miscarriage, young or old, this formula eliminates blood stasis and generates new blood. It protects against all postpartum emergencies and boosts spirit.
Sheng Hua Tang (Generating the New Decoction)
Quan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed, 8 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 3 qian), Jiang Tan (Zingiberis Rhizoma Carbonisatum, 5 fen, 4 fen in summer), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, 5 fen), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, remove skin and tips, 10 kernels).
Decoct in water, keep hot, and add six or seven spoons of aged wine to the medicine. Store the dregs separately. After the first decoction of three doses, combine the dregs of all three doses and decoct again. This is a treasure for postpartum care. For deficient patients presenting with critical or heat symptoms, or those who have suffered abortion or severe postpartum fatigue with fever and headache, even if pain subsides slightly after two or three doses, if mass pain persists, further treatment is required. Postpartum patients do not tire of frequent medication. Since Sheng Hua Tang is the sovereign herb for most postpartum conditions, other treatments are merely modifications based on symptoms.
