The *Yizong Bidu* states: The Stomach is the sea of water and grain. The essence from water and grain transforms into blood and qi, nourishing and moistening the zang-fu organs. Because childbirth causes injury and disturbance to the zang-fu organs, sometimes one type of qi becomes excessively dominant. This qi invades the intestines and stomach, causing dryness and stagnation within them, leading to rebellious qi. Consequently, vomiting, hiccups, and inability to eat occur. (Vomiting belongs to the Yangming channel syndrome; therefore, this phenomenon is primarily attributed to Stomach dysfunction.)
Xue Ji (Xue Shi) said: If the aforementioned symptoms are caused by irregular meal times, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction). If caused by overeating, use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction). If caused by irregular meals combined with physical overexertion, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). If caused by food stagnation, use Renshen Yangwei Tang (Ginseng Decoction for Nourishing the Stomach). If due to Spleen-Stomach qi deficiency, use Liujunzi Tang. If due to Stomach qi deficiency and cold, add Paoyijiang (Prepared Ginger) and Muxiang (Aucklandia Root). If Cold Water rebels against Earth (Kidney cold invading the Spleen), use Yihuang San (Benefit the Yellow Powder). If Liver Wood rebels against Spleen Earth (Liver qi attacking the Spleen), use Liujunzi Tang plus Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix). If Mingmen Fire declines and fails to warm Spleen Earth, use Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill). (Although vomiting primarily concerns the Spleen and Stomach, which is the general principle, Bawei Wan may not be the immediate remedy for emergency situations.) If accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, cold limbs, or abdominal pain, this indicates yang qi deficiency and cold; urgently use Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Decoction for Regulating the Middle), which often results in recovery.
A postpartum patient vomited phlegm in the morning, had fever at night, and could not sleep day or night. Someone used herbs to clear heat, resolve phlegm, and descend fire, resulting in daily emaciation, reduced food intake, and worsening of the previous symptoms. I said: Vomiting phlegm in the morning indicates Spleen qi deficiency; fever at night indicates Liver blood deficiency; insomnia day and night indicates consumption of Spleen blood. Thus, I prescribed Liujunzi Tang (This condition involves phlegm generated by Spleen deficiency, so Liujunzi Tang is the primary prescription, serving as the general principle), JiaWei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), and JiaWei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction), administered sequentially for regulation until recovery.
Xiangling Wan: Treats persistent vomiting after childbirth.
Dingxiang (Clove), Chen Sha (Cinnabar, separately ground, each 6 fen), Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung, 1 qian).
Grind Dingxiang and Wulingzhi first, then mix with Chen Sha and grind evenly. Form pills the size of a chicken head using Gallus gallus domesticus var. domestica bile (Gou Dan) or Sus scrofa domesticus bile (Zhu Dan). Take one pill per dose, grinding it down with a decoction of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Chenpi (Tangerine Peel).
(This formula is not only suitable for postpartum cases but also effective for vomiting in miscellaneous diseases. Its efficacy lies in the use of Gou Dan and Wulingzhi.)
Puhuang San: Treats lochia retention three to four days after childbirth, accompanied by vomiting, hiccups, and high fever.
Shaoyao (White Peony Root, 2 liang 5 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen, each 2 liang), Honghua (Carthami Flos, 0.5 liang), Hetiao Xinzhongdi (Lotus Leaf Midrib, 1 piece), Shengdihuang Zhi (Rehmanniae Radix Juice, 1 zhan).
Cut the herbs, decoct in 2 sheng of water until 1 sheng remains, strain, add Puhuang, boil briefly, and divide into three doses to take on an empty stomach.
(Vomiting caused by lochia retention is often overlooked. This formula uses Hetiao, Honghua, Puhuang, and Danggui to treat lochia retention, and Shengjiang to stop vomiting and calm the Stomach, which is correct. However, do Shengdihuang, Zhimu, and Shaoyao not damage the Stomach Yang? Know that these three herbs are intended for high fever. Would they be used if there were no high fever? Moreover, in the first few days postpartum, Shaoyao is particularly contraindicated. Readers should understand the origin of this prescription.)
Juhong Banxia Tang: Treats vomiting and hiccups due to Stomach deficiency after childbirth.
Jupi (Tangerine Peel, 1 liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each 0.5 liang), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba, 3 liang).
Cut the herbs. Take 5 qian per dose, add 5 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), decoct in water, and take orally.
(This formula resolves phlegm and regulates qi; it is a standard formula for treating vomiting. It differs from the previous formula, which treated blood stasis with cold and hot properties. One must understand this distinction.)
Kaiwei San: Treats postpartum vomiting due to Stomach deficiency, chest fullness, and anorexia.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Hezi (Chebulae Fructus, 1.5 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 0.5 liang).
Cut the herbs. Take 5 qian per dose, add 5 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), decoct in water, and take orally.
(Renshen tonifies Stomach qi, while Hezi treats chest fullness. One tonifies qi, the other stabilizes qi. This naturally differs from the preceding formulas, representing a unique perspective unknown to many.)
Jiangshu San: Treats postpartum patients with no other ailments who suffer from frequent vomiting, hiccups, and inability to eat.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang 2 qian 5 fen), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 1.5 liang).
Cut the herbs as one dose. Decoct in 2 sheng of water and 2 sheng of wine until 1 sheng remains. Divide into three doses.
(With no other ailments, this specifically targets Stomach qi deficiency and cold, focusing solely on warming and tonifying. Using Shengjiang to assist Baizhu and adding wine for decoction demonstrates the subtlety of this method.)
Shilian San: Treats postpartum Stomach cold causing coughing, hiccups, vomiting, anorexia, or abdominal distension.
Shilian Rou (Nelumbinis Semen, 1.5 liang), Baifuling (Poria, 1 liang), Dingxiang (Clove, 0.5 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with Jiangtang (Ginger Tea) or Miyin (Rice Drink). Take three times daily.
(*Bencao* records: Shilian refers to lotus seeds that have sunk in water for a thousand years. They are sweet in taste and descending in nature, thus benefiting the Stomach, clearing heat, generating fluids, and treating vomiting. Combined with Fuling to direct qi downward and Dingxiang to warm cold, assisted by Shengjiang, its composition is vastly different from previous formulas. Alas, the 'Shilian' sold in markets today is extremely bitter, lacks a heart, resembles lotus seeds but is not them. Sellers claim they are fruits from trees in the mountains. Since the substance is different, its nature and taste differ, and it cannot possibly benefit the Stomach and harmonize the middle. Seekers should choose carefully and not be misled by merchants.)
Qian Shi Yihuang San: Treats Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold where Water rebels against Earth, causing vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, loose stools, or cold extremities. (This is a standard formula for vomiting and hiccups due to Spleen deficiency with phlegm.)
Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 1 liang), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Hezi Rou (Chebulae Mesocarp), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Dingxiang (Clove, each 2 qian).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct in water, and take orally.
JiaWei Sijunzi Tang: Treats persistent vomiting and hiccups after childbirth.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Sharen (Amomi Fructus, equal parts).
Cut the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose, add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and one Jujube, decoct in water, and take warm. (Each of the above eight formulas has its own rationale. Verify and apply them individually; do not administer arbitrarily.)
