Xiaochaihu Jia Dihuang Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction with Rehmanniae Radix): Treats women suffering from Wind-stroke (Zhongfeng, a condition often involving external pathogenic factors affecting the channels), presenting with fever and aversion to cold. The menses happen to arrive. During the day, consciousness is clear; at night, there is delirium and hallucinations of seeing ghosts. Symptoms occur at specific times. This is named "Heat Entering the Blood Chamber" (Re Ru Xue Shi, where heat pathogens invade the uterus/blood chamber). It also treats postpartum lochia that has just begun but suddenly stops.
Ingredients and Dosages: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) - 3 qian; Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum) - 2 qian; Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) - 2 qian; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) - 1.5 qian; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) - 0.5 qian; Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) - 1.5 qian.
Preparation and Administration: Combine all ingredients as one dose. Add two zhong (ancient liquid measure) of water, five slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and two dates (Da Zao). Decoct until one zhong remains. Take at any time without restriction.
Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) using Sheng Di Rehmanniae Radix instead of Shu Di Huang, added with Chai Hu Bupleuri Radix, decocted and taken orally, is also effective. (Note: This treats diseases transmitted from the Taiyang channel. Since the menses have just started, the Blood Chamber is deficient, allowing pathogens to enter due to deficiency and transmit across channels. However, the Blood Chamber differs from the Stomach Fu in terms of Qi and Blood attributes, hence the difference between daytime and nighttime delirium. Daytime symptoms resembling seeing ghosts occur because Liver-evil lodges and disturbs the Hun (Ethereal Soul), causing illness of the Ben Shen (Root Spirit). Xiao Chaihu Tang resolves exterior and interior pathogens; Sheng Di Huang cools heat in the blood. If not cured, needling Qimen (LR14) is an option. Those formulas adding Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) and Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), or Chengqi Tang and Didang Tang, are used for purging based on the severity of the condition.)
Ganjiang Chaihu Tang (Dried Ginger and Bupleurum Decoction): Treats women with Cold Damage (Shanghan) whose menses have just started, with Heat entering the Blood Chamber, presenting with alternating chills and fever like malaria, or maniacal speech and hallucinations of seeing ghosts.
Ingredients and Dosages: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) - 1 qian; Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) - 3 fen; Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix) - 5 fen; Mu Li (Ostrea Concha) - dosage unspecified; Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) - processed; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) - stir-fried, each 3 fen.
Preparation and Administration: Decoct with water and take orally. Recovery occurs with sweating.
Niuhuang Gao (Calculus Bovis Paste): Treats Heat entering the Blood Chamber leading to madness and inability to recognize people.
Ingredients and Dosages: Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis) - 2.5 qian; Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris) - 3 qian; Yu Jin (Curcumae Longae Radix) - 3 qian; Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) - 3 qian; Nao Zi (Borneolum Syntheticum) - 1 qian; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) - 1 qian.
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, size similar to Sophora japonica pods. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in fresh well water. (Although this addresses the same alternating chills and fever from Heat entering the Blood Chamber, why use the previous formula's approach but add Ginger, Cinnamon Twig, and Oyster Shell? This is comparable to Chaihu Jiangui Tang, merely lacking Zhi Mu and Huang Qin. This shows that ancient formulas have logical coherence even when changing by one herb; it should not be underestimated. The key lies in exploring the "like malaria" aspect and "recovery with sweating." This differs from the previous formula, representing true flexible application, capable of inspiring intelligence. These are truly herbs targeting the Heart channel; one must understand the principle of mother-son transmission.)
Haige San (Sea Clam Powder): Treats women with Cold Damage where blood stagnates in the chest and diaphragm. It is appropriate to take this medicine and needle the Qimen acupoint (LR14).
Ingredients and Dosages: Hai Ge (Concha Arcae) - 5 qian; Hua Shi (Talcum) - calcined, prepared by water flotation - 5 qian; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) - 5 qian; Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) - 1 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with egg white and swallowed. Once the Small Intestine becomes unobstructed and urination/stooling improves, the stagnant blood will naturally dissipate. Follow up with Guizhi Honghua Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Carthamus Decoction) to induce sweating for recovery. (This is not a case of Heat entering the Blood Chamber, but rather blood stagnation in the chest and diaphragm. It is included here because the Liver channel distributes through the hypochondrium and circulates along the throat. The needling methods are excellent, and the sweating therapy is particularly brilliant.)
