Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder): Treats vexatious heat, dry mouth and throat, reduced appetite with drowsiness, and irregular menstruation caused by Blood deficiency. It also primarily treats disharmony of Ying and Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi), phlegm-cough with tidal fever, emaciation of the limbs, and gradual development of bone-steaming consumption. (This formula focuses on regulating the Spleen and Stomach, and moving Liver-Gallbladder stagnation; therefore, Sheng Di Huang is not used to avoid damaging Stomach Qi.)
Dang Gui (Washed with wine), Bai Shao (Stir-fried), Bai Zhu, Bai Fu Ling, Chai Hu (1 qian each), Gan Cao (Roasted, 0.5 qian).
Add three slices of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and twenty grains of Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed), decoct in water and take at any time. Another variation adds Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) and Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit, stir-fried), named Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). Another variation adds Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) and Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii). For cough, add Sang Bai Pi (Morus Root Bark), Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Zhi Mu, Mai Dong. For hemoptysis, add Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Shan Zhi Zi, Mu Dan Pi. For vomiting, add Chen Pi (Citrus Peel), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Xuan Fu Hua (Inula Flower). For gastric discomfort (zao re), add Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) stir-fried with ginger, or Qin Lian Er Chen Tang (Scutellaria-Coptis Two-Chen Decoction).
Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction): Treats deficiency and damage to the Chong and Ren vessels, amenorrhea, feverish sensation in the skin and muscles, resembling consumptive disease (lao zhai). (When Yang is in excess, heat occurs; this is suitable for cases where Liver Yin is insufficient and Liver Fire is hyperactive alone. For those with strong Spleen and Stomach, Hu Huang Lian can be added.)
Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Bai Shao Yao, Sheng Di Huang (1 liang each), Chai Hu (0.5 liang), Huang Qin (2.5 qian).
Coarsely crush the herbs. Take 8 qian per dose, decoct in water and ingest. For bone-steaming consumption, add Di Gu Pi and Mu Dan Pi to Siwu Tang; another variation adds Hu Huang Lian to Siwu Tang, which is extremely effective.
Liushen Tang (Six Deities Decoction): Treats insufficiency of Qi and Blood, vexatious heat in the body, fatigue in the four limbs, and loss of appetite. (This treats Blood deficiency with deficient heat in the Qi level.)
Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Bai Shao Yao, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Di Gu Pi (1 qian each).
Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach.
Benshi Fang (Prescription from Bencao Gangmu/Capable Hands Formula): Treats irregular blood vessels in women, alternating chills and fever, resembling fatigue from consumption.
Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Huang Qi, Gan Cao, Guan Gui (Official Cinnamon Bark) (1 liang each), Shu Di Huang, Bai Shao Yao, Bai Zhu (2 liang each), Chai Hu, E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, crushed and stir-fried) (0.5 liang each).
Grind into a fine powder. Take 5 qian per dose with one jujube, decoct in water, and take on an empty stomach; taking it with plain warm water is also acceptable. It should prevent leukorrhea forever, regulate blood vessels, nourish the uterus, and ensure lifelong health without disease. (Yang deficiency leads to aversion to cold; Yin deficiency leads to fever. This formula tonifies both Qi and Blood, similar to Shiquan Dabu Tang, but lacks Ren Shen. Chai Hu and E Jiao are herbs for the Liver channel and are key treatments for chills and fever.)
Digupi San (Lycium Bark Powder): Treats deficiency of Qi in Blood and Wind, frequent alternating chills and fever, or afternoon tidal fever and internal heat.
Di Gu Pi, Chai Hu (1 liang each), Sang Bai Pi (Stir-fried), Zhi Ke (Bran-fried), Qian Hu, Huang Qi (Stir-fried) (0.75 liang each), Ren Shen, Bai Fu Ling, Bai Shao Yao, Gan Cao, Wu Jia Pi, Gui Xin (Cinnamon Heart) (0.5 liang each).
Coarsely crush the herbs. Take 3-5 qian per dose with 1.5 cups of water and three slices of Sheng Jiang, decoct until 0.7 cup remains and take. (Note: Huang Qi, Ren Shen, and Gui Xin are herbs that tonify the Lung and warm Qi; Sang Bai Pi, Zhi Ke, and Di Gu Pi are herbs that drain the Lung and clear heat; Bai Shao and Fu Ling are astringent and descending flavors; Wu Jia Pi and Qian Hu are dispersing and moving flavors. Using them together focuses on Qi deficiency with fire; one must seek balance in the dosages and examine carefully amidst the symptoms to understand the subtlety.)
Chai Hu San (Bupleurum Powder): Treats women with alternating chills and fever, emaciation, pain in joints, dry mouth, vexation, and lack of appetite.
Bei Chai Hu, Chi Fu Ling, Huang Qi, Bai Zhu (1 qian each), Mai Men Dong (Heart removed, 3 qian), Bie Jia (Vinegar-roasted turtle shell, 2 qian), Ren Shen, Di Gu Pi, Zhi Ke (Bran-fried), Sheng Di Huang, Sang Bai Pi, Chi Shao Yao, Jie Geng, Gan Cao (0.5 fen each).
Prepare as one dose, use two zhong of water and three slices of Sheng Jiang, decoct until one zhong remains, and take at any time. (Ren Shen, Huang Qi, and Bai Zhu benefit the Yuan Qi of the Lung, Spleen, and San Jiao, treating lack of appetite; Mai Dong and Sheng Di Huang clear fire in the Heart and Pericardium to generate Blood, treating dry mouth and vexation; Chai Hu and Bie Jia resolve heat in the bones and joints and disperse externally; Chi Fu Ling and Chi Shao Yao guide Heart fire and dissipate Blood heat downward; Zhi Ke, Jie Geng, Di Gu Pi, and Sang Bai Pi drain Lung fire and dissipate stagnant Qi in the chest. This is also a formula with tonification within draining. Knowing the reason for excluding Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui is the essence of its brilliance.)
Qibao Tang (Seven Treasures Decoction): Treats alternating chills and fever.
Fang Feng (Remove radicle), Zhi Mu, Sheng Di Huang (0.5 liang each), Chai Hu (Remove radicle), Qian Hu (Remove radicle), Qin Jiao, Gan Cao (Roasted) (2.5 qian each).
Coarsely crush the herbs. Take 5 qian per dose with 1.5 cups of water and three cun of Ren Shen, decoct until 0.7 cup remains and take. (For pathogenic factors in the exterior with cold, Fang Feng is suitable; for pathogenic factors in the interior with heat, Zhi Mu is suitable; for heat accumulation in the chest, Qian Hu is suitable; for heat accumulation in the meridians, Qin Jiao and Chai Hu are suitable to resolve chills and fever due to indistinct Yin and Yang between interior and exterior; Gan Cao and Ren Shen tonify Qi to prevent excessive dispersion; Sheng Di Huang cools Blood to guard Yang. This formula is suitable when pathogenic factors are accumulated but Qi and Blood are not yet deficient.)
Chaihu Siwu Tang (Bupleurum Four Substances Decoction): Treats chronic consumptive disease in women with slight alternating chills and fever. This is a combined formula of Siwu Tang and Xiao Chai Hu Tang. ("Slight alternating chills and fever" implies the condition is not severe.)
Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Shao Yao, Shu Di Huang (1.5 liang each), Chai Hu (8 qian), Ren Shen, Huang Qin, Ban Xia, Gan Cao (3 qian each).
Coarsely chop the herbs. Take 1 liang per dose with three slices of Sheng Jiang, decoct in water and ingest.
Chaihu Yigan San (Bupleurum Liver-Suppressing Powder): Treats widowed or secluded women experiencing yin without yang, where sexual desire arises but is often unfulfilled, leading to symptoms resembling malaria with aversion to cold and fever.
Chai Hu (2.5 qian), Qing Pi (Green Citrus Peel, 2 qian), Chi Shao Yao (Stir-fried), Mu Dan Pi (1.5 qian each), Cang Zhu (Soaked in rice wash water and stir-fried), Shan Zhi Zi (Stir-fried), Di Gu Pi, Xiang Fu Zi (Cyperus Rhizome) (1 qian each), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, 0.8 fen), Chuan Xiong (0.7 fen), Sheng Di Huang, Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit) (0.5 fen each), Gan Cao (0.3 fen).
Coarsely chop, add Sheng Jiang, decoct in water, and take one dose on an empty stomach and before bed. (This formula soothes the Liver and opens depression, dissipates stagnant Qi and Blood, cools the Heart and activates the Spleen, possessing its own unique insight. It is a variation of Yueju Wan, with exquisite dosage ratios.)
Shengdi Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill): Treats nuns and widows with alternating chills and fever like malaria, desiring men but unable to obtain them.
Sheng Di Huang (2 liang), Chi Shao Yao (1 liang), Chai Hu, Huang Qin, Qin Jiao (5 qian each).
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey, size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, swallowed with decocted Wumei (Mume Fruit) soup, three times daily. (This formula removes Dang Gui, serving as a preparation for constrained fire and blood stasis in the Jueyin Liver channel.)
