Heijin San (Black Gold Powder): Treats deficiency and damage of Qi and Blood in women, irregular menstruation, and metrorrhagia or metrostaxis (heavy bleeding or prolonged spotting between periods).
Ingredients: Carp skin, palm bark, yellow cattle horn, Pogostemon cablin (Bugu Zhi), human hair (each 1 liang), cuttlefish bone, dried ginger, Equisetum hiemale (Muzei), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Rehmannia glutinosa (Shu Dihuang) (each 0.5 liang).
Preparation: Crush the above ingredients, mix well, place in a porcelain jar, seal tightly with salt mud, let dry, then calcine with 5 jin of charcoal fire until red hot, until smoke ceases. Take out and bury in soil to cool, then remove and grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang), and take on an empty stomach mixed with rice water.
Wuhui San (Five Ashes Powder): Treats persistent lower bleeding leading to metrorrhagia. (Both Wuhui and Shihui derive their efficacy from the color black, similar to the principle of Baicaoshuang [soot] and black ink. If previous formulas were incomplete, this formula is presented as a complete prescription to provide reference.)
Ingredients: Lotus pod shell, yellow silk, calcined human hair (Xueyu), Baicaoshuang [soot], palm bark (above items are collectively burned to ash), Gardenia jasminoides (Zhizi) (stir-fried until black), Coptis chinensis? No, Puerariae Flos (Puhuang) (stir-fried), black ink, Draconis Sanguis (Xuejie).
Preparation: Grind all ingredients into fine powder for oral administration with liquid; or prepare honey pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with clear rice water.
Shihui San (Ten Ashes Powder): Treats persistent lower bleeding.
Ingredients: Brocade pieces, Equisetum hiemale (Muzei), palm bark, Platycladi Cacumen (Boye), Artemisia argyi (Aiye), dried resin (Ganqi), carp scales, carp scales (Liyu Lin), calcined human hair (Xueyu), Angelica sinensis (Danggui) (each of the above is individually charred to retain efficacy [cun xing], equal parts, ground into powder), Moschus (Shexiang) (a small amount, separately ground).
Preparation: Mix powders evenly. Take 2 qian per dose, taken on an empty stomach mixed with warm wine.
Shihui Wan (Ten Ashes Pills): Treats metrorrhagia and persistent lower bleeding.
Ingredients: Brocade ash (or silk ash), yellow silk ash, horse tail ash, Artemisia argyi (Aiye) ash, lotus node ash, lotus pod ash, oiled human hair ash, red pine bark ash, palm bark ash, Puerariae Flos (Puhuang) ash (equal parts).
Preparation: Mix powders evenly. Use vinegar-boiled sticky rice paste to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 70 pills per dose, increasing to 100 pills, taken on an empty stomach with rice water. (Note: Lotus nodes and pods help unblock blood vessels and dissipate stasis. Their nodes and pods possess astringent properties due to their solid nature and astringent taste. The lotus pod grows upward, possessing clear Qi, resembling the Wood element, facilitating the return of Yang to Yin, thus used to astringe blood. Yellow silk and brocade are made of silk; silkworms eat mulberry leaves and spin silk. Mulberry trees receive Qingyang Qi and possess the ascending nature of Shaoyang, harmonizing the Yang of Jia Gallbladder to nourish the Blood of Jueyin Liver. Therefore, immortals do not use non-mulberry wood fires for decoction, as mulberry wood fire is neither too mild nor too fierce, possessing warming and generating Qi. Silkworm feces treat metrorrhagia, fresh mulberry stops bleeding—this is not baseless talk! Baicaoshuang is soot from hundred herbs, also made from pine soot. Herbs belong to Yin of Yi Wood, tasting mostly bitter; pines have clear bitterness and astringency. Soot rises upward; blackness controls Fire. Pine bark ash follows this logic. Fish belong to Fire but live in Water, representing Fire within Water. Only crucian carp is born in all four seasons, thus obtaining much Earth Qi. Its fishy smell enters the Liver first, assisting Liver Qi ascent. Scales and shells represent Metal. Water contains Fire and Metal; Metal governs astringency. This represents the generation of Metal by Fire and Earth, and the combination of Metal and Water. Horse tails are red; horses represent Yang of Qian, tails are the end of Blood. Blood descends and generates tails; tails are at the end of pure Yang bodies, representing Yin within Yang. Remaining Yin Blood generated in pure Yang bodies implies Yang within Yin. When Blood collapses downward, it is because Yin lacks Yang to ascend. Here, Yin within Yang is borrowed to stimulate Yang ascent to lift Yin, and its ash is used for astringency. These are excellent methods.)
Rusheng San (Like Sage Powder): Treats stopping bleeding and metrorrhagia.
Ingredients: Palm bark, meat of Chinese bayberry (Wumei), dried ginger (1.5 liang, all charred to retain efficacy).
Preparation: Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with Chinese bayberry wine, taken on an empty stomach before meals. Chronic cases resolve in no more than three doses. Another variation removes dried ginger, uses 2 cun of Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gancao), half raw and half cooked, ground together. Take 2-3 qian, mixed with light vinegar water.
Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder): Treats persistent metrorrhagia in women. (Regulates Qi and Blood while astringing blood.)
Ingredients: Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Os Draconis (Longgu) (calcined red), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi) (stir-fried, each 1 qian), palm hair ash (5 qian).
Preparation: Grind into powder. Take 4 qian per dose, mixed with rice water, taken on an empty stomach. Avoid greasy foods, pork, fish, chicken, etc.
Another Prescription: Proven effective for metrorrhagia.
Ingredients: Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Paeonia lactiflora (Baishaoyao), dried ginger, palm bark (equal parts).
Preparation: Char each ingredient to retain efficacy, grind into fine powder. Mix with vinegar, take before meals. (This formula combines blood-regulating herbs with dried ginger, employing the subtle art of contrary treatment.)
Hupo San (Amber Powder, also known as Wushamao San): Treats sudden severe metrorrhagia.
Ingredients: Paeonia veitchii (Chishaoyao), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi), dried lotus leaf, men's hair (washed with soapberry water), palm bark, Wushamao (lacquer gauze headscarf, taken for its property of ascending Yang Qi).
Preparation: Equal parts. Char on new tiles until black ash, retaining 30% efficacy, grind into fine powder. Take 5 qian per dose, mixed with child's urine on an empty stomach. If walking for a long distance (approx. 10 li), take another dose to stop bleeding. (Lotus leaf has a clear fragrance, can ascend Jia Gallbladder Qi to clear blood; Wushamao is dyed with gallnut, thus stops bleeding; lacquer breaks stasis. Taken commonly, it symbolizes ascending Yang.) For postpartum excessive blood loss, add rice vinegar, Beijing ink, and a little Moschus (Shexiang). Alternatively, first take Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) boiled with vinegar for 1-2 doses, then follow with Wulingzhi San.
Liying San (Immediate Response Powder): Treats collapse of the Sea of Blood in women. Also treats intestinal wind with lower bleeding.
Ingredients: Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) (3 liang, half raw, half stir-fried), palm bark (1 liang, charred to retain efficacy).
Preparation: Grind into fine powder. Take 5 qian per dose, mixed with half a cup of wine and half a cup of child's urine, decocted to 70%, taken warm at any time. For intestinal wind, do not use child's urine. (The exclusion of child's urine for intestinal wind suggests a distinction between anterior and posterior orifices.)
Lixiao San (Immediate Effect Powder): Treats persistent metrorrhagia in women.
Ingredients: Angelica sinensis (Danggui), lotus plumule (Lianhua Xin - astringent and aromatic, harmonizes Heart Qi and astringes blood), white cotton seed, Carthamus tinctorius (Honghua), reed flower (Maohua) (each 1 liang).
Preparation: Cut into bean-sized pieces, wrap in white paper, seal with mud, heat to retain efficacy, grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine.
Bixiao San (Certain Effect Powder): Treats irregular menstruation and persistent metrorrhagia/metrostaxis in women.
Ingredients: Palm bark (burned), Equisetum hiemale (Muzei) (nodes removed, charred to retain efficacy, each 2 liang), Moschus (Shexiang) (1 qian, separately ground).
Preparation: Grind into powder. Take 2 qian with wine, on an empty stomach.
Wujin San (Black Gold Powder): Treats persistent metrorrhagia.
Ingredients: Palm hair (charred to retain efficacy, 1 liang), Os Draconis (Longgu) (calcined, 2 qian).
Preparation: Grind into fine powder, mix evenly. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with good wine on an empty stomach. Two doses will stop bleeding immediately.
Xiangfan San (Cyperi and Alum Powder): Treats metrorrhagia.
Ingredients: Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi) (soaked in vinegar overnight, stir-fried until scorched to retain efficacy, ground, 1 liang), alum powder (Bai Fan) (2 qian).
Preparation: Mix evenly. Take with rice water on an empty stomach; highly effective. Another method uses lotus leaf for mixing, which is especially wonderful.
Another Prescription: Treats persistent metrorrhagia in women.
Ingredients: Sophora japonica flos (Huaihua) (1 liang), palm hair ash (5 qian).
Preparation: Grind into powder. Decoct with 2 cups of water and a little salt until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm. Another method uses 1 liang of aged Huaihua and 0.5 liang of Baicaoshuang [soot], taken with 1-2 qian of liquor quenched with a red-hot scale weight. Another method uses calyx of Huaihua burned to ash, taken with warm wine (2 qian bi). Another method uses Huai mu er burned to ash, taken with wine (fang cun bi).
