Jinggucao (Ajuga decumbens), grows in fields. Seedlings emerge in spring, reaching a height of over one chi (approx. 30 cm). The stem is round, and the leaf tips are serrated. In summer, it produces three or four spikes, blooms with yellow flowers, and bears triangular fruits resembling those of Ricinus communis (Castor Bean). It tastes sweet and pungent. Non-toxic. Harvested in May, it treats wind-dampness and possesses the efficacy of warming bones and dispelling wind, hence its name Jinggucao (Bone-Tendon Grass), also known as Nuangucao (Warm-Bone Grass) or Jiiegucao (Bone-Setting Grass). In ethnic regions, it is used for setting broken bones and applying externally to wounds to stop bleeding and relieve pain; it treats various rheumatic bone and tendon pains, spasms, cold-damp obstruction, podagra (Hong Kong foot), and generalized tinea, psoriasis, scabies, and leprosy-like conditions when taken as wine infusion. It treats various flaccidity syndromes, phlegm-qiang stagnation, as well as "Five Exhaustions" and "Seven Injuries," with miraculous effects upon consumption. For medicinal use, both seedlings and flowers are employed. Its morphology is significantly different from Verbena officinalis (Mabiancao). Verbena officinalis has leaves resembling chrysanthemum and purple flowers; Nuangucao (Jinggucao) has pointed leaves and yellow flowers, and its therapeutic actions differ; users should exercise caution in differentiation.
*Puji Fang* records: Treating regurgitation and vomiting of food, using Nuangucao as a single herb. Folk experience: Treating the initial stage of various swellings and toxins; external application causes immediate dissipation. For bone-setting, take five qian of powder with wine; recovery occurs after three doses. Avoid eggs and garlic.
