In the first month of 1989, I visited my aunt's home for the New Year and happened to meet her cousin-in-law, Ms. Zhang. Knowing that I was a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), she asked me to take her pulse. While palpating, I also observed her complexion and demeanor. Her face appeared pale, grayish, and dull; the skin on her chi region (inner wrist) was cool; and her pulse was deep, fine, and slow, with the chi pulse being particularly pronounced. I immediately diagnosed her with lower back pain that favored warmth and frequent urination. She confirmed this. She had taken over 40 doses of herbal medicine prescribed by a famous TCM doctor at the local hospital. The white blood cells in her urine disappeared, but proteinuria appeared and could not be eliminated. There were still three doses left. I asked to see the prescription and found it consisted mainly of bitter-cold herbs, fortunately in small dosages. I told her, "The prescription he gave you is good, but it lacks a few ingredients." I added 60g of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome), 30g of Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome), and 6g of Weilingxian (Clematis Root) to the remaining herbs. After just three doses, her proteinuria miraculously resolved, and her lower back pain disappeared as well.
Effective Prescription for Toothache
It is said that "toothache is not a disease, but when it hurts, it feels like life-threatening." There is no need to differentiate between Yin and Yang syndromes. Place one spoonful of Bingpian (Borneol) on the affected area. Once the "bad water" is discharged, the toothache will stop within 5 minutes. To eliminate the root cause, differentiation is required: If there is loose stool and clear, long urination, use Liaoxixin (Asarum from Liaoning) chewed and placed in the mouth, or take a powder made of equal parts of Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 2g per dose. For true fire toothache with swollen and red gums, thirst, dark urine, and difficult defecation, quickly administer Zengye Chengqi Tang (Increase Fluids and Order the Qi Decoction). Once the bowels are unblocked, all symptoms will disappear.
Sexual Health and Sexual Life
Food and sex are human nature. "Sex" implies reproduction and should not be excessive; excess leads to disease. In men, excess injures Jing (Essence); in women, it injures the Kidney. Essence is the foundation of life, stored in the Kidney and utilized by the Liver. When abundant, the body is light and healthy; when deficient, the body is fatigued and spirit exhausted. Male sexual intercourse requires three arrivals: Heart Qi arrival causes penile heat; Kidney Qi arrival causes penile hardness; Liver Qi arrival causes penile erection and trembling. If any one does not arrive, harmony is lost. Female sexual intercourse also has three arrivals: Heart Qi arrival causes hot breath from mouth and nose; Liver Qi arrival causes breast firmness; Kidney Qi arrival causes vaginal lubrication. If couples engage without waiting for these three arrivals, it is tasteless, offspring may be flawed, men injure their essence, and women injure their kidneys. Moreover, masturbation in men and self-gratification in women lack the interaction of Yin and Yang essences, causing even greater harm. What is called "sexually transmitted diseases" actually refers to diseases caused by promiscuity. The pathology involves the Taiyang (Greater Yang) and Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) meridians, affecting the organs of Heart, Kidney, Bladder, and Small Intestine. Treatment is very tricky, often characterized by more cold than heat. For essence injury, tonify the essence; for Yang deficiency, assist Qi and Yang. Regardless of whether it is Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, or bacterial infection, one must distinguish Yin and Yang syndromes before treating to avoid errors.
Colitis and Gastric Ulcer
The primordial establishment lies in Water and Fire. When Water and Fire interact harmoniously, there are no chronic ailments.
The symptom of colitis is diarrhea, mostly occurring at dawn, known in ancient texts as "Fifth Watch Diarrhea." Why does diarrhea occur at dawn? At this time, Yang Qi (heat energy) begins to rise and clashes with the existing Spleen-Stomach cold turbidity. Water and Fire clash, transforming into water and flowing downward, resulting in loose stools. In TCM syndrome differentiation, this is a Yin syndrome, specifically Spleen-Kidney Yang Deficiency, belonging to the Taiyin (Tai Yin) stage in Six Meridian differentiation. Taiyin damp-earth favors warming and transformation. Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) is the appropriate formula. The key lies in dosage; if the illness is severe and the medication light, recovery is slow. Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) are the main drugs; if they do not reach one liang (approx. 30-50g depending on era), efficacy is poor.
Gastric ulcer is called epigastric pain. Pain decreases with heat and increases with cold. It eases with food and worsens on an empty stomach. Eating cold or drinking cold liquids also causes diarrhea, indicating severe Yang deficiency and a deficit of primordial Fire. Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction to Establish the Middle) can be used. Adding Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) to break Yin cold will significantly enhance the effect.
Rheumatoid Arthritis—Like attracts like, one thing conquers another
Transcribed from Mr. "sbgucn"'s prescription
A friend suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, with deformed finger joints and unbearable pain in all joints late at night. After much suffering under Western medicine, he was told it was incurable. I informed him to bake old dog bones until dry, grind them into powder, and take them with wine. Initially skeptical, after enduring unbearable pain, his father obtained a set of dog bones. After taking approximately half a dose, he was cured. In my hometown, villagers who could not afford doctors cured themselves this way. This is not a secret recipe; most older people know it. Dogs are considered a hot-natured animal with tough bones, as the saying goes, "a dog's head cannot be fried to crispness." Treating bone with bone, using dog bones for rheumatoid arthritis, essentially uses the residual energy of the dog bone to replenish the human body's deficient energy, which is energy transfer. If this prescription is modified to: Sheng Wutou (Raw Aconitum Carmichaelii Radix, crushed) 10g, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) 30g, Gancao (Licorice Root) 30g, Huangqi (Astragalus Root) 30g, decocted under high pressure for 10 minutes after boiling, and the liquid taken orally, the effect is faster.
On the Importance of Differentiating Yin and Yang Syndromes in Folk TCM: A Case of Liver Cancer
In 1990, my knowledge of Western medicine was limited; I only knew Yin-Yang, Zang-Fu organs, meridians, and Materia Medica, having never seen college textbooks. As a folk TCM practitioner inheriting from my father, this allowed me to dare to challenge liver cancer, a Western medical terminal illness. Here is my experience treating liver cancer: This patient had a second episode of liver cancer, having been cured by my father three years prior to the recurrence. During the first episode, I do not remember my father's treatment clearly, only that he stated it was due to stubborn phlegm and blood stasis, and recommended raw Shuizhi (Leech) powder, leading to a quick recovery. The second recurrence occurred because the patient heard of my father's death and believed no one else could treat him, especially since major hospitals had given a death sentence the first time, likely leading to a relapse after mental collapse. I rode a bicycle 40 li to visit the patient. Inspection revealed a distended abdomen resembling an 8-9 month pregnancy, a dark and dull complexion, restlessness, a bluish-purple tongue body, and purple-dark sublingual veins. Palpation revealed a Lao (Taut) pulse. Inquiry revealed difficulty eating for days, but normal bowel and bladder movements. Diagnosis: Deep-seated cold and stubborn cold settling in the Liver and Spleen, with insufficient Primordial Yang. I assured the patient it was a minor issue. I do not have the complete prescription from over ten years ago, but recall the main herbs: Sheng Chuanwu (Raw Aconitum Carmichaelii Radix), Sheng Caowu (Raw Aconitum Kusnezoffii Radix), and Chuan Fuzi (Aconitum Carmichaelii Radix Preparata) 20g each; Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) 20g, Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) 20g, Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus) 20g, Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) 20g, Wuyao (Linderae Radix) 20g, Gancao (Licorice Root) 50g, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) 20g, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) 30g. Five doses, rapidly decocted for one hour. After just one dose, the patient slept for 17 hours. Upon waking, spirits were greatly improved, the illness seemed gone, and the abdomen shrank. Continuing the same formula for 35 doses led to recovery. A follow-up in 2001, 12 years later, showed continued health with rare colds. From this case, I grasped the main signs: abdominal distension like pregnancy, dark complexion, bluish-purple tongue, purple-dark sublingual veins, Lao pulse, and normal bowel/bladder function. These are Yin syndromes. Yin syndromes require large doses of hot herbs. Many patients today who would not have died in the past die because they live in an era where many are ignorant. They do not understand TCM and rush to major hospitals upon illness. Many cancer patients do not die directly from cancer but from mental collapse.
Dry Eyes, Restoring Yang and Transforming Qi
An elderly female suffered from dry eyes and epigastric pain every autumn. This year, the pain recurred, and she feared cold food and drinks. Based on lack of thirst, clear urine, aversion to cold, and increased pain with cold, I diagnosed a Cold-Yin syndrome.
Prescription: Mian Jiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome rich in starch) 15g, Gancao (Licorice Root) 15g, Dan Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root soaked in clear water) 10g. Grind into powder, take with boiled water, 4g per dose, once daily. After taking the medicine, drink one spoonful of honey. Within half an hour, the whole body feels slightly numb, then warm. Stomach pain disappears, and dry eye symptoms lessen. After finishing the medicine, dry eyes resolve. Discarded expensive eye drops. This is adding fire to the bottom, moistening the lid. Restoring Yang and transforming Qi makes the eyes smooth.
On the Role of Ginger
Ginger acts differently depending on processing, serving as both medicine and food/seasoning. Young ginger releases the exterior through sweating, generates fluids, quenches thirst, dispels dampness, and opens the appetite. Old ginger releases the exterior through sweating and warms the Stomach to disperse cold. Dried ginger warms the Middle to disperse cold and warms channels to unblock vessels. Old ginger sliced and processed becomes Paojiang (Charred Ginger Rhizome), which only warms the Middle to disperse cold. Charred ginger warms the Middle and stops bleeding, effective for gastric ulcer bleeding due to cold pain. Traumatic injuries often damage muscles and tendons, causing congestion and edema. Western medicine focuses on anti-inflammation and IV fluids (water), leading to high costs, sequelae, and incomplete cures. TCM has advantages based on scientific theory, considering past and future. If blood stasis and edema are fresh, strong blood-invigorating herbs are unnecessary; a single herb, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome), suffices. Ginger is pungent, spicy, and juicy, invigorates blood and resolves stasis without damaging fluids, and promotes urination. Generally, a heavy decoction of three taels of ginger cures the condition. For severe pain, add Shaoyao Gancao Tang (Peony and Licorice Decoction) and add some Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike).
Simple Effective Prescriptions for Burns and Scalds
1. Ercha (Kadamba Fruit), Chuanjun (Rhubarb Rhizome and Root), Bingpian (Borneol), and Sheng Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) in equal parts, ground to powder, mixed with sesame oil for topical application. Leaves no scar.
2. Pierce the burn/scald area and apply royal jelly directly. Leaves no scar.
3. For burns/scalds without broken skin, immediately apply Borneol dissolved in alcohol topically. Immediate effect.
My Experience Prescription for Traumatic Injuries:
Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) 150g, Sheng Baishao (White Peony Root) 30g, Gancao (Licorice Root) 30g, Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike) 20g. Heavy decoction, divided into two doses.
Yellow Urine is Not Always Heat
Liu**, Female, 37 years old, Zhaoyuan Highway Bureau, Oct 16, 2005
Spleen-Kidney Yang Deficiency
Pulse is deep, fine, and extremely weak. Tongue body is pale, thin, and scanty. Bowel movement occurs once every few days. Low fluid intake. Yellow urine. Left hypochondriac pain every morning.
Prescription: Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) 20g, Pao Chuan Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) 10g, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) 20g, Gancao (Licorice Root) 20g, Danshen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root) 20g, Dangshen (Codonopsis Root) 30g, Sheng Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 50g, Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 50g, Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 10g, Huangqi (Astragalus Root) 50g, Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) 10g, Shanzhuyu (Cornus Officinalis Fruit) 30g, Fuling (Poria) 20g, Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome) 20g. Six doses.
Oct 23, 2005: Pulse is deep, fine, and slow. Tongue body is pale. Bowel movement once daily. Urine turns clear. Left hypochondriac pain disappears. Add Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 3g, Rongui (Cinnamon Bark) 10g, Sharen (Amomum Fruit) 10g, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) 100g to the above formula. Six doses.
From the above case, yellow urine is not always due to heat. Yin binding with constipation allows turbidity to enter the Small Intestine, yet urine remains yellow.
Discussion on Shanghan (Cold Damage)
Shanghan is not merely Shanghan; Six Meridians are not merely Six Meridians. Understanding the subtleties here, what difficult diseases remain? The *Shanghan Zabing Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases) covers not only Shanghan but also Warm Diseases and Miscellaneous Diseases. Six Meridian differentiation includes not only Six Meridian syndromes but also differentiation of Twelve Meridians, Zang-Fu organs, Qi-Blood, and Body Fluids. Yin-Yang differentiation is the general principle of Shanghan Lun. Yang-Heat and Yin-Cold summarize the entire disease process. Retaining a portion of Yang Qi retains vitality. Taiyang Wind Strike uses Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) to harmonize Ying and Wei, effectively supplementing Heart and Lung Qi. Taiyang Cold Damage uses Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) to scatter cold and diffuse Lung Qi, unblocking Heart and Kidney Qi. Shaoyang Syndrome, with alternating chills and fever, uses Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) to vent the exterior (Taiyang) and clear the interior (Gallbladder depression heat); Dachaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) vents the exterior and unblocks the Fu organs (Intestines, Stomach, Gallbladder). Yangming Disease, with fullness and stagnation in the Stomach, uses the Three Chengqi Decoctions to preserve Body Fluids. Taiyin Disease, with inability to eat, results from either Spleen Yang Deficiency with poor transport/transformation or Lung Qi depression causing Large Intestine failure to conduct, leading to wheezing and fullness. Shaoyin Meridian Disease, with faint and fine pulse and desire to sleep, indicates Heart-Kidney Yang Deficiency and insufficient Wei Qi. Wei Qi moves in the Yin, causing fear of cold and curling up. Jueyin Syndrome, with insufficient Yin Essence and deficient Yang Qi, presents with mixed cold and heat, entering the Pericardium and Liver Meridian. The Warm Disease chapters focus entirely on preserving Body Fluids and protecting Yang Qi. Thus, Six Meridian differentiation encompasses Twelve Meridians, Five Zang and Six Fu organs, and Qi-Blood-Body Fluid differentiation. Mastering *Shanghan Zabing Lun* and comprehending *Zheng Qin'an Medical Text Interpretation*, why fear difficult diseases?
Chapter 7: Ancient Sages and Modern Worthies' Understanding of Disease.
Detailed on "Folk TCM" online.
Read ten thousand books, solve mysteries without enlightenment; the true transmission is one phrase, saving the world's suffering.
Appendix: "Great Sage" Discusses Medicine
I. Folk TCM practitioners recognize Yin and Yang, differentiating carefully, then dividing into Six Meridians and Zang-Fu. Syndromes categorize diseases, leaving nowhere to hide. Yin-Yang constitution is fundamental; disease is a mark on the mind. Reversing Yin and Yang hides disaster. Use warm-hot herbs for Yin syndromes; discuss bitter-sweet-cold herbs for Yang syndromes. For mixed Yin-Yang and cold-heat, use hot herbs for excess dampness. Study *Neijing* as reference, know *Yijing* in detail. Use *Shanghan Lun* clinically, keep *Shennong Bencao Jing* in heart, record hot-cold-warm-cool in detail. To avoid clinical errors, do not forget Qin'an's books; flexible medication is guaranteed. Learn from Zhenglong's miscellaneous diseases; ancient sages' wisdom is excellent. One Yin, one Yang, one book; ten thousand diseases do not leave Yin and Yang. Without Yin and Yang, there is no article. The sages' true transmission is one phrase; fools store ten thousand books in boxes. Why seek jade from other mountains? Folk TCM treasures are hidden. Discussing medicine without understanding Yin and Yang is like a blind man lighting a lamp—useless light.
II. Nasal discharge, especially clear discharge: Normally, if Heart-Kidney Yang Qi is not deficient, the navel is warm and Mingmen (Gate of Life) is not cold. With Heart-Kidney Water-Fire interaction, exhaled air from the nose is neither cold nor hot, but warm and moist. In Yang deficiency, the air is cold and turns to water (clear nasal discharge) before reaching the nasal cavity, expelled with exhalation. We see clear discharge. As the condition improves, Yang Qi increases, exhaled air temperature rises significantly, drying the discharge into thick yellow mucus. Therefore, seeing clear nasal discharge in clinic reliably indicates a Yin syndrome.
III. I frequently combine Wutou (Aconite Root) and Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) in clinical practice to treat Cold-Damp Bi and Phlegm-Turbidity chest pain. I generally combine them with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome), which enhances efficacy and neutralizes the toxicity of Wutou and Banxia, with no side effects ever.
The reason ancient texts state Wutou is incompatible with Banxia is likely: If either herb is not decocted or processed correctly, it causes whole-body numbness. If both are improperly processed and combined, numbness becomes heavier, potentially leading to respiratory inhibition and death. Ancients may have concluded Wutou opposes Banxia based on this, causing most TCM practitioners to fear it and abandon a good herb pair.
IV. Autumn 1989, a friend invited me to treat his brother, stating his brother had a hard-to-treat intestinal bacteria. He had been hospitalized twice: First, a famous hospital in a prefecture-level city diagnosed colitis. Treatment for one year failed. Then returned to a TCM hospital in the county-level city for over two years (publicly funded), with morning diarrhea 3-4 times daily. I did not believe such a minor illness took so long to cure. I went to the hospital, saw the records, and was shocked: How could the TCM Department Director use Baitouweng Tang (Patrinia Decoction) for nearly two years for a Deficient-Cold syndrome? Pulse was string-taut and slow; tongue coating was thick and white; urine was clear. Inquiry revealed diarrhea for over two years, costing nearly 20,000 yuan. The patient was still hospitalized. Prescription: Dangshen (Codonopsis Root) 30g, Chao Baizhu (Stir-fried Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 30g, Fuling (Poria) 20g, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) 30g, Gancao (Licorice Root) 10g, Zhi Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) 20g, Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) 3g. Five doses, decocted in water, taken morning and evening. "Why is the diarrhea worse after taking the medicine?" asked an attending physician (who had switched to the hospital's prescription) bringing interns. I said, "He used cold-cooling herbs for nearly two years for a Deficient-Cold syndrome. It would be strange if he didn't have worse diarrhea with hot herbs!" Continued the same formula for fifteen more doses. The patient recovered and was discharged. Truly opened the interns' eyes.
V. Mu Yujuan, Female, 28 years old, Guanli Jiang Family, Oct 19, 2005
Pulse is deep, fine, slow, and choppy. Tongue body is pale, coating scanty, sublingual veins pale. Fatigue, sore lower back after exertion, dry stool, yellow urine, aversion to cold, poor appetite, especially in summer. Has an eight-month-old male infant, often catches colds, loose stool, low-grade fever after colds. Recently, the infant's cold caused breathing sounds like a cormorant's call; various Western medicines ineffective. Infant nurses. Treat the mother for the child's disease; treat mother and child together. Prescription:
Shengdi (Rehmannia Root) 30g, Shashen (Glehnia Root) 20g, Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 30g, Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 20g, Gouqi (Goji Berry) 20g, Huangqi (Astragalus Root) 30g, Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) 20g, Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) 10g, Biba (Long Pepper Fruit) 10g, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) 10g, Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) 20g, Sheng Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 50g, Fuling (Poria) 20g, Gancao (Licorice Root) 10g, Pao Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) 10g, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) 30g, Baihe (Lily Bulb) 20g, Dangshen (Codonopsis Root) 30g, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 3g. Six doses.
Nov 7, 2005: Although only the adult took medicine, the baby absorbed the medicinal properties through milk and was treated accordingly. After taking medicine, the infant's stool became slightly formed, and the cormorant-like breathing sound disappeared.
VI. In 1994, I differentiated and treated a case of pediatric pneumonia. The six-month-old child had received dozens of injections in the head from Western medicine, looking like a honeycomb, truly ugly. Fever persisted for over ten days. Using the method of treating the mother for the child's disease, the child nursed for 6 hours, fever subsided, and recovery was achieved.
