Yellow Emperor asked: How should these conditions be treated? Qibo replied: To treat diseases of the Zang organs, use the Shu (Transport) points of the Zang organs; to treat diseases of the Fu organs, use the He (Sea) points of the Fu organs; to treat edema, use the Jing (River) points.
This distinguishes the depth of pathogenic invasion and applies acupuncture treatment accordingly; herbal therapy can be inferred by analogy. The key is to always examine the deficiency or excess, cold or heat, to regulate the condition.
In *Ling Shu: Kou Wen Pian* (Chapter on Questions and Answers from the Mouth), the Yellow Emperor asked: What qi causes yawning? Qibo replied: Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) travels in the Yang aspects during the day and in the Yin aspects at midnight. Yin governs the night, and the night governs sleep. Yang governs the upper part, and Yin governs the lower part. Therefore, when Yin qi accumulates below and Yang qi has not yet exhausted, Yang pulls upward and Yin pulls downward; the mutual attraction of Yin and Yang causes frequent yawning. When Yang qi is exhausted and Yin qi is abundant, the eyes close (sleep); when Yin qi is exhausted and Yang qi becomes abundant, one awakens. The treatment is to reduce Foot Shaoyin (Kidney Meridian) and tonify Foot Taiyang (Bladder Meridian).
Yawning refers to opening the mouth wide to inhale. Before feeling drowsy and wanting to sleep, one must yawn first, primarily because the qi of Yin and Yang attract each other, causing frequent yawning. If yawning occurs frequently outside of drowsiness, it indicates deficient Yang and abundant Yin. Acupuncture is suitable: reduce Foot Shaoyin meridian and tonify Foot Taiyang meridian, as these two meridians are the pathways for the entry and exit of Wei Qi between Yin and Yang. For detailed principles, refer to the "Ying Wei Sheng Hui Pian" (Chapter on the Generation and Meeting of Ying and Wei Qi) in the Meridians section.
The Yellow Emperor asked: What qi causes sighing? Qibo replied: This is due to abundant Yin qi and deficient Yang qi, with rapid Yin qi and sluggish Yang qi. When Yin qi is excessively abundant and Yang qi is nearly extinct, sighing occurs.
The treatment is to tonify Foot Taiyang (Bladder Meridian) and reduce Foot Shaoyin (Kidney Meridian).
Sighing is the sound produced when sorrow is unrelieved and qi is depressed and unable to flow freely. When Yin and Yang qi are reversed and Yin qi is abundant, blocking Yang qi and preventing circulation, this sound is produced. Thus, the tonification and reduction methods are the same as for yawning, aiming to assist Yang qi to achieve flow.
The Yellow Emperor asked: What qi causes sneezing? Qibo replied: When Yang qi is harmonious and smooth, filling the Heart and emerging from the nose, sneezing occurs. The treatment is to tonify the Ying-Spring point Meiben (also known as Meishang) of Foot Taiyang (Bladder Meridian).
This states that the qi of sneezing arises from stagnation leading to unblocking. *Xuan Ming Wu Qi Lun* (Chapter on the Five Qi Manifestations) states: Diseases caused by Kidney qi manifest as yawning and sneezing. This begins with depression of Kidney qi, which then becomes unblocked, ascending to the Heart. As Yang qi becomes harmonious and smooth and fills the area, it emerges from the nose to cause sneezing. Therefore, tonifying the Ying-Spring point of Foot Taiyang helps to unblock the qi of Shaoyin (Kidney). In cases of sudden Jue syndrome leading to death, it is due to the stifling and severance of Heart and Kidney qi. Therefore, using medication to clear the nasal passages allows for sneezing; those who sneeze survive, while those who do not die. *Su Wen: Re Lun* (Chapter on Heat Diseases) states: On the eleventh day, as Shaoyin disease declines, thirst stops, fullness resolves, dry tongue improves, and sneezing occurs. This shows that sneezing results from the unblocking of stagnant Kidney meridian qi. Furthermore, in diseases of reversed Yin and Yang qi, if yawning occurs, it indicates that Yin and Yang qi are about to interact, which is an auspicious sign. Zhang Zhongjing said: "When a physician palpates the pulse and the patient yawns, there is no disease." This also refers to the interaction of Yin and Yang indicating health.
Therefore, both yawning and sneezing are precursors to recovery from illness.
