The Yellow Emperor asked: What qi causes a person to drool? Qibo answered: Food and drink enter the stomach. If there is heat in the stomach, parasites move; when parasites move, the stomach becomes relaxed; when the stomach is relaxed, the Lianquan acupoint (an acupoint located under the tongue) opens, thus causing saliva to flow out. Treatment should involve tonifying the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian.
Saliva is the fluid of the Spleen. When the Spleen is deficient and the Stomach has heat, fluids overflow, exiting from the Lianquan acupoint under the tongue and spilling outside the mouth, due to the movement of parasites. This is common in infants. Ordinary people also experience this during deep sleep, because during drowsiness, Spleen Qi relaxes and fails to control saliva. Tonifying the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian allows the Qi of Lianquan to descend, so that saliva can return to the Spleen.
The Yellow Emperor asked: What qi causes a person to yawn? Qibo answered: When Stomach Qi is not solid, all meridians become deficient. When meridians are deficient, sinews and vessels become lax and slack. When sinews and vessels are lax and slack, after exertion during sexual intercourse, Qi cannot recover, thus causing yawning. Based on the location of the pathology, tonify the space between muscles.
"Yawn" (Qian) refers to the appearance of the body and head drooping, lacking the strength to lift them. The Stomach is the Sea of Water and Grain, primarily moistening the Zongjin (General Sinews). The Zongjin binds the bones and facilitates joint movement. When Stomach Qi is deficient, sinews and vessels become weak, leading to laxity and weakness, presenting an image of dejection. Medication should aid Stomach Qi. Acupuncture tonification of the intermuscular spaces is used because the Spleen and Stomach govern muscles.
The Yellow Emperor asked: What qi causes a person to weep with tears and mucus due to sorrow? Qibo answered: The Heart is the master of the five zang organs and six fu organs. The eyes are where numerous meridians converge and serve as the pathway for upper jiao fluids. The mouth and nose are the portals for Qi. Therefore, sorrow, grief, and worry cause the Heart to move; when the Heart moves, the five zang organs and six fu organs all tremble. Trembling stimulates the numerous meridians; stimulation of the numerous meridians opens the fluid pathways. Once the fluid pathways open, tears and mucus flow out. Fluids are used to nourish essence and moisten orifices. Thus, when the upper fluid pathway opens, one cries. If crying does not stop, fluids are exhausted. When fluids are exhausted, essence is not nourished. When essence is not nourished, the eyes lose vision. Hence, it is called "Loss of Essence." Treatment should involve tonifying the Tianzhu acupoint (an acupoint on the Bladder Meridian located at the back of the neck).
Tears are the fluid of the Liver, and nasal mucus is the fluid of the Lung. Generally, Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids originate from the zang-fu organs, and the Qi of these organs is directed by the Heart, as the Heart is the master of the body. Therefore, emotional disturbance moves the Heart, causing organ Qi to tremble and fluids to leak out with Qi. For example, fright causes sweating, and confusion causes sweating; sweat is the fluid of the Heart. Other cases can be inferred similarly. The Liver opens into the eyes. Excessive tearing depletes Liver fluids, resulting in blindness. Thus, patients of Xihe Tongzi (a type of eye disease) may go blind due to this. Tianzhu is an acupoint on the Bladder Meridian, located at the nape behind the hairline. The reason for using acupuncture to tonify this point is that the Bladder is the Officer of the Capital, storing fluids; tonifying it replenishes the damaged fluids.
