(Lu Rong, Deer Antler Velvet) Those that are red and lustrous like amber are of good quality. When preparing Lu Rong (Deer Antler Velvet), first grind Tian Ling Gai (Human Skull Cap) into powder. Then, saw the Lu Rong into slices, mix them with high-quality Yang Zhi (Sheep Fat) blended with Tian Ling Gai powder, and apply this mixture onto the Lu Rong slices. Slowly roast over low fire until both inside and outside become yellow and brittle, resembling a brownish color. Wrap it in a piece of Lu Pi (Deer Skin) and place it in a room overnight to allow the "drug soul" to return. The next morning, bake slowly over low fire until crisp, then pound into powder for use. For every five liang of Lu Rong, use three liang of Yang Zhi, roasting until fully absorbed. If there are tiny white insects within the Lu Rong, invisible to the naked eye, they must not enter the human nose, or they will transform into Sang Chong (nasal worms), rendering the medicine ineffective. Do not smell it with the nose. Ma Bo (Cannabis Flower) serves as its guiding herb.
(Zhu Xuan Ti, Pig Suspended Hoof) Those from yellow cattle or green cattle slaughtered in the twelfth lunar month are of good quality.
(Hu Gu, Tiger Bone) Collected on the upper Dog Days (Fu days) of the sixth lunar month, dried in shade for one hundred days, sliced, and stir-fried with Su You (Butter/Ghee).
(Tiger Tibia) Those with a yellow hue, where the curve of the horn is deep and sharp, tight, and has small hanging marks are authentic. Held to the ear, those that produce a "ji ji" buzzing sound are excellent. When processing Tiger Tibia, it should never be used alone, as it loses efficacy. It must be continuously broken against itself, bound with rope, and filed using an iron file. Take pieces as needed, avoiding exposure to wind. Any unfiled residue must be wrapped in double-layered paper to prevent the loss of medicinal power. After filing, pound separately until fine. Sift the "back head wind" portion again before adding to prescriptions to avoid scraping the intestines. Another method suggests wrapping it tightly and keeping it in one's bosom overnight to make it easier to crush.
(Tiger Tibia) When selecting Tiger Tibia, those that are black as lacquer and yellow as chestnuts, with clear penetration between top and bottom, showing distinct cloud-head and rain-foot patterns, are of secondary quality. Those that are dark black, with coarse, wrinkled, cracked, and glossy texture are of good quality. Modern practitioners often engage in fraud, dyeing and boiling the bones in various ways; careful distinction is required. For processing, file the bone fragments, pound them finely in a mortar, then grind them ten thousand times in a bowl before incorporating into medicines. Alternatively, keep it in the bosom overnight to facilitate crushing, or grind it into juice for medicinal use. Song Zhi (Pine Resin) and Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) serve as guiding herbs. It is incompatible with Lei Wan (Trichosanthes Fruit), Jun (Mushrooms/Wormwood?), Wu Tou (Aconiti Radix), and Wu Hui (Aconiti Radix Preparata). Salt is contraindicated. Pregnant women should avoid taking it, as it can dissolve fetal qi.
(Tiger Tibia) The tibia is preferred, though head and neck bones can also be used; those with a yellow color are superior, and male tiger bones are better than female ones. Bones from tigers killed by poisoned arrows must not be used, as their toxins permeate the bone and blood, causing harm to humans. The preparation method involves crushing the bone, removing the marrow, coating it with butter, wine, or vinegar according to specific methods, and roasting over charcoal fire until yellow before use.
(Ancient formulas sometimes use the left hoof plate or the hind hoof plate, soaked in wine for half a day, roasted until scorched, and then used.)
