Duhuo Jisheng Tang (Sanguisorba and Dangshen Decoction) is used to treat conditions where deficiency of the Liver and Kidneys allows Wind-Dampness to attack internally, resulting in flaccidity and spasmodic pain in both lower legs, bi-syndrome weakness, and stiffness/heaviness in the feet and knees.
This formula can be found in the "Lumbago Section" (Yaotong Men).
Dongyuan Kaijie Daoyin Wan (East Garden's Knot-Opening and Guiding Pill) is used to treat food stagnation not digesting, causing epigastric fullness and oppression.
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) (stir-fried), Maiqu (Malt Qu), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each 1 liang); Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (each 0.5 liang); Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (stir-fried), Badoushuang (Crotonis Semen Frost) (each 1.5 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into powder. Soak in rice water, steam into a cake, and shape into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 40-50 or 70 pills each time with warm water.
Commentary: This formula treats internal injury from diet where the Spleen and Stomach's transporting and transforming qi is deficient, failing to ascend and instead sinking downward, leading to Hongxiangjiao (Gout/Lower limb swelling). Thus, this formula is used to guide out fluid retention, promote diuresis, and transform Spleen Qi. It originates from the *Taiyang Li*. However, there are also cases causing edema in the upper body, waist, and face; for opinions on this, see the "Edema Treatise" under the section on standard treatment methods.
Miscellaneous Washing Therapy:
The washing medicine is called Daoqi Chushi Tang (Qi-Guiding and Dampness-Expelling Decoction).
Ingredients: Weilingxian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shuo Ye (Leaf - likely a textual variant for Qu Ye/Oak Leaf).
Equal parts, coarsely powdered. Boil in 2 dou of water until reduced to 1.5 dou. Strain and wash the affected area while hot, at any time.
Topical Application Medicine:
Ingredients: Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 0.5 liang), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (2.5 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder, mix with ginger juice, and apply to the affected area.
The *Huangdi Neijing* states: If the Jueyin pulse is slippery, the disease is Hu Hernia (Fox Hernia); if the Shaoyin pulse is slippery, the disease is Lung Wind Hernia; if the Taiyin pulse is slippery, the disease is Spleen Wind Hernia; if the Yangming pulse is slippery, the disease is Heart Wind Hernia; if the Taiyang pulse is floating, the disease is Kidney Wind Hernia; if the Shaoyang pulse is floating, the disease is Liver Wind Hernia.
The *Zhenjing* (Classic of Acupuncture) states: A slightly slippery Heart pulse indicates Heart Hernia, drawing pain to the umbilicus and lower abdomen with borborygmus; an excessively slippery Liver pulse indicates [missing character] Hernia; an excessively slippery Kidney pulse indicates Long Bi (difficulty in urination).
Commentary: The *Nan Jing Fa Ming* explains that a slippery pulse appearing above the Guan position indicates severe Heat, as Yang merges with Yang. Therefore, it manifests as severe Heat. If a slippery pulse appears at the Chi position, it indicates severe Cold, which generates [missing character] Hernia. The slippery pulse belongs to Yin pulses. The disease arises from internal causes. Cold invasion is similar to the aforementioned syndromes.
Mingmen (Gate of Life) is another name for the Bao Luo (Pericardium). Bing Fire and Ding Fire combine below. Since Bing and Ding cannot overcome Ren and Gui (Water), they transform according to Cold Water, thus generating [missing character] Hernia. However, the slippery pulse is a Yin pulse, and the disease stems from internal causes; cold invasion is consistent with the above syndromes.
The *Nan Jing* states: When the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) is diseased, there is bitter knotting internally. In men, this manifests as Seven Hernias.
Commentary: Mr. Hua Shou's original meaning states: The Ren Mai originates from the Bao Men (Womb Gate) and travels along the abdomen. Therefore, when diseased, it suffers from internal knotting. In men, it becomes Seven Hernias; in women, it becomes Jia Ju (Masses).
The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: A large, rapid, and deep Kidney pulse indicates Kidney Hernia; a large, rapid, and deep Liver pulse indicates Liver Hernia; a beating, slippery, and rapid Heart pulse indicates Heart Hernia; a deep and pounding Lung pulse indicates Lung Hernia; a rapid Three Yin pulse indicates Spleen Hernia (Three Yin refers to the Spleen pulse). If the Cunkou pulse is wiry and tight, the combination of wiry and tight indicates Cold Hernia; a deficient and slow Duyang pulse indicates Cold Hernia. Cold Hernia involves pain around the umbilicus. Upon onset, there is cold sweat, and the hands and feet become cold.
