Dizziness. If slightly rich and cloying tonics are administered, diarrhea will inevitably increase. Thus, it was considered an incurable condition, which was a premature abandonment of the case. Therefore, a modified prescription based on Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Zuojin Wan (Left Metal Pill), Sichuan Pepper (Chuanjiao), Plum (Meizi), Lotus Seed (Lianzi), Papaya (Mugua), Yuyuliangshi (Hematitum), and Red Clay (Chishizhi) was used. The patient recovered after one hundred days. However, menstruation had not yet resumed. Relatives and friends discussed using blood-invigorating methods to unblock the menses. Mengying strongly refuted this, arguing that this was not a case of menstrual obstruction that could be treated by unblocking. Instead, the source of Qi and Blood generation must be cultivated. When Qi is vigorous and Blood is generated, circulation will naturally become abundant. Adhering strictly to this formula, by mid-winter, Tian Gui (menstrual fluid) arrived, and muscles became plump.
(Upper vomiting and lower diarrhea with inability to eat indicate that Stomach Qi has been damaged by bitter-cold herbs. When Liver Yang rebels upward, Spleen Earth is injured, and Yin Essence cannot be secured internally, leading to abdominal pain and spontaneous sweating. The Liver governs Blood; if the Liver is injured, menstruation is delayed. If the Liver attacks the Spleen, Qi and Blood are insufficient, leading to emaciation. Yangic and acrid-hot medicines further injure the Liver, causing dizziness. Rich and cloying medicines further damage the Spleen, increasing diarrhea. Although these types of medicines may conflict in treatment, the primary issue here is the damage to the Stomach by bitter-cold herbs. The Liver is attached to the Spleen; when the Spleen is regulated, the Liver is regulated. It is appropriate to first benefit Stomach Yang, empowering Middle Qi, so that medicine can be administered in an orderly manner. Stir-fried Radix Codonopsis (Ludangshen) 5 qian, dried sliced White Poria (Baifuling) 3 qian, stir-fried Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) 3 qian, stir-fried Licorice Root (Gancao) 2 qian. Sichuan Pepper Red (Chuanjiaohong) 2 fen added later. Dried Papaya (Chen Mugua) 3 qian. Fried Hematitum (Yuyuliang) and Fried Red Clay (Chishizhi), each 1 qian, ground into coarse powder and taken mixed with the decoction. Send down Zuojin Wan (Left Metal Pill) 6 fen with the medicine. Ten dried Lotus Seeds (Chen Lianzi), core removed but skin retained. Sijunzi Tang combined with Pepper Red maintains Stomach Qi. Zuojin Wan combined with Papaya uses sour and bitter flavors to drain Liver Yang. Lotus seeds preserve tonification and astringe. Fried and ground Yuyuliang and Chishizhi taken together follow Yu's method to astringe the intestines and stop diarrhea. Mengying strongly refuted that this was a case of menstrual obstruction treatable by unblocking. Menstrual obstruction due to unblocking applies to cases where Yang is solid and Qi is abundant, caused by occasional consumption of cold/raw food during menstruation leading to stasis; the disease is in Blood, not Qi, and abundant Qi can tolerate harsh blood-unblocking drugs. In this case, Qi deficiency prevents Blood generation; the disease is in Qi, not Blood.)
Zhu Hengshan suffered from chest fullness and excessive phlegm for a long time. Various medicines failed to cure him. Mengying diagnosed: "Clear Yang Qi fails to rotate and transport." He prescribed a formula containing Ginseng (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), and Atractylodes (Baizhu). The patient suddenly recovered completely.
(Long-standing illness implies deficiency amidst excess. Emphasis is placed on "fullness" in chest fullness. Chest fullness indicates Qi deficiency with impaired ascending and descending functions. This case is Yang deficiency, not Phlegm-Excess. Stir-fried Radix Codonopsis (Ludangshen) 5 qian, stir-fried Astragalus (Huangqi) 3 qian, dried sliced White Poria (Baifuling) 3 qian, Ginger-processed Rhizoma Atractylodis (Jiangzhi Zhi Maoyu) 4 qian. Fresh Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xi Xiebai) added later, crushed, 3 qian. Processed Pinellia Rhizome (Zhi Banxia) 3 qian. Lai's Tangerine Peel (Laishi Chenpi) 1 qian. Stir-fried Dried Ginger (Chao Ganjiang) 3 qian. Baked Ginger (Weijiang) 3 slices.)
Zheng Jiujing consulted physician Chen Liushun in Yue. After taking medicine, he sweated, became delirious and mad, and semen flowed as if about to escape. Mengying palpated his pulse: rapid and chaotic, extremely fine upon deep pressure. He said: "This condition is critical; only a sliver of vitality remains. This person's Yin aspect has always been deficient. One cannot entirely blame Fuzi (Aconite) and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark)." He administered a large dose of Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Baibu (not mentioned, likely error in source or implied context, sticking to text: Zhimu, Baipu? Text says 'Zhi Bai', likely Anemarrhena and Phellodendron), Sangzhi (Mulberry Twig), Longgu (Fossilized Bones), Muli (Oyster Shell), Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Licorice Root), Baihe (Lilii Bulbus), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Salt-fried Dou Chi (Soja Glycines Semen Preparatum). Upon swallowing, he felt calm. The next day, Zhizi, Dou Chi, and Gancao were removed, and Guiban (Tartar Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Biejia (Trionycis Carapax), and Salt-fried Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) were added. After more than ten doses, he recovered.
(Yin aspect inherently deficient, how could it withstand Fuzi and Rougui seizing Yin? Mengying's words are earnest and profound; medical students should not excuse themselves. Sliced Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen Pian) 1 liang, Large Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Da Shengdi) 8 qian. These two are soaked in boiling water, dregs removed, and the decoction used to cook other herbs. Stir-fried Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) 1.5 qian. Stir-fried Phellodendri Cortex (Chuan Huangbo) 1 qian. Whole White Peony Root (Zheng Baishao) pounded and decocted first, 1 liang. Raw Mulberry Twig (Sheng Sangzhi) 4 qian. Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao) 3 qian. Lily Bulb Filaments (Baihe Xu) 3 qian. Fresh Dendrobii Caulis (Xian Shihu) pounded and decocted first, 1 liang. Black Gardeniae Fructus Skin (Hei Zhipi) 3 qian. Light salt-water fried Soja Glycines Semen Preparatum (Dan Shuiyan Chao Douchi) 1.5 qian, added together later. Pounded Dragon Bone (Longgu) 1 liang. Oyster Shell (Muli) 8 liang. Dendrobii Caulis, three flavors, charcoal-roasted first for six minutes. Take the decoction and combine with the previous Yuanshen and Shengdi decoction to boil the medicine. The danger of this case lies in semen flowing as if escaping. Longgu and Muli astringe essence. For urgent conditions, urgent treatment is required, necessitating large doses. Administration method: pour slowly in portions. Removing Zhizi, Dou Chi, and Gancao the next day indicates the exterior is resolved and sweating has stopped. Gancao does not enter the Lower Jiao, so it is removed together. It is appropriate to add Blood Tortoise Shell (Xue Guiban) 2 liang and Blood Softshell Turtle Shell (Xue Biejia) 4 liang to assist Longgu and Muli in astringing essence and stopping sweat. Roasting time same as before. Add Salt-fried Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum (Dan Shuiyan Chao Juhong) 1 qian. Among a batch of Yin-nourishing medicines, there must be no lack of agents that promote Middle Qi and descend Qi as counter-agents.)
Wu Fuzhai's sister had a constitution inherently weak. Subsequently losing her parents, she was depressed. Menstruation gradually delayed. Sleep and appetite ceased. She became emaciated and experienced acid regurgitation. The situation was extremely alarming. Mengying treated her with Gaoli Shen (Korean Ginseng), Salt-fried Huanglian (Phellodendri Cortex), Gancao (Licorice Root), Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus), Hongzao (Jujubae Fructus), Baihe (Lilii Bulbus), Fuling (Poria), Muli (Oyster Shell), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), and Xinjiang (Safflower Stamen). Each symptom gradually improved. Subsequently, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) were added to nourish Yin. Her health eventually surpassed her previous state.
(Depression means Heart Fire fails to generate Spleen Earth, leading to Spleen failure. Ceased sleep and appetite indicate the disease is in the Qi aspect. Spleen failure means Qi cannot generate Blood, hence emaciation. Acid regurgitation is due to Liver Depression generating Heat. Spleen failure cannot nourish Liver Wood, leading to Liver Depression generating Heat. Korean Ginseng (Gaolishen) sliced 3 qian. Light salt-water fried Phellodendri Cortex (Dan Shuiyan Chao Huanglian) 6 fen. Stir-fried Licorice Root (Chao Gancao) 1.5 qian. Northern Wheat (Beixiaomai) pounded 4 qian. Three Red Dates (Hongzao). Lily Bulb Filaments (Baihe Xu) 3 qian. Dried sliced White Poria (Baifuling) 3 qian. Earth-fried White Peony Root (Tu Chao Baishao) 1 qian. This formula combines Sijunzi Tang with Zhang Zhongjing's Ganmai Dazao Tang principles. It strengthens Heart and Spleen. Furthermore, Ginseng and Licorice combined with Huanglian drains Liver Heat while tonifying Spleen Yang, also taking advantage of the principle of Bitter-Sweet transforming into Yin. Baishao combined with Huanglian takes the principle of Sour-Bitter draining Liver Yang. After this formula achieves great effect, remove Gancao and Baihe Xu. Add Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) 1.5 qian, wrapped in silk, added later. Vinegar-processed Oyster Shell (Cu Muli) 4 qian, pounded first. Safflower Stamen (Xinjiang) 4 fen. Guide the medicinal force downward to pacify Liver Yang so the Liver does not attack the Spleen. Subsequently add pure Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Jing Guishen) 1.5 qian. Stir-fried Large Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Chao Da Shengdi) 3 qian. Remove Wheat and Xuanfuhua from the original formula.)
A male patient suffered from throat obstruction (Hou Bi). Specialists cured him initially, but generalized swelling increased daily. Physicians fled in fear. Mengying diagnosed: "It is a disease caused by medicine." He administered Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Regulate the Middle Decoction) for several doses, and he recovered. Treating throat obstruction with cold-cooling methods is originally correct, but the medicine exceeded the disease, turning it into a Warm-Tonic condition. Mengying often said: "Three out of ten die from disease, seven out of ten die from medicine."
(Swelling is a Water Disease. When Spleen Yang fails, swelling increases daily. Earth-fried Radix Codonopsis (Tu Chao Ludangshen) 5 qian. Earth-fried Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Tu Chao Baizhu) 3 qian. Earth-fried Licorice Root (Tu Chao Gancao) 2 qian. Earth-fried Dried Ginger (Tu Chao Ganjiang) 3 qian. Earth-fried Prepared Aconite Root (Tu Chao Shu Fupian) 5 qian, pounded first then stir-fried.)
Mrs. Zhu suffered from postpartum lochia retention, and chronic asthma suddenly erupted. Specialists in this field could not intervene. Mengying prescribed Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Fuling (Poria), Huashi (Talcum), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Sangzhi (Mulberry Twig), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Geke (Unio Concha), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Ziwan (Asteris Radix), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Siguazi (Benincasae Semen), Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), and Hupo (Electri Succinum) in varying combinations. He recovered in three days.
(Because lochia stagnation triggered chronic asthma, this is Blood disease affecting Qi. Purple Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Zi Danshen) 3 qian. Raw Persicae Semen (Sheng Taoren) pounded 3 qian. Leonuri Fructus (Chongweizi) pounded first 4 qian. Western Electri Succinum (Xi Hupo) ground and taken with medicine 8 fen. Charred Crataegi Fructus (Jiao Shanzha) ground 2 qian. Sichuan Fritillariae Bulbus (Chuan Beimu) ground 3 qian. Fang Tongcao 3 qian. Wine-stir-fried Mulberry Twig (Sangzhi Jiuchao) 3 qian. Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) 1.5 qian, wrapped in silk, added later. After taking this formula for two days, remove Danshen, Taoren, Chongweizi, and Hupo. Add White Poria (Baifuling) 3 qian. Western Talcum (Xi Huashi) wrapped and decocted first 4 qian. Raw Unio Concha (Sheng Geke) pounded first 5 qian. Raw Coicis Semen (Sheng Yiren) 4 qian. Asteris Radix (Ziwan Rong) 1.5 qian, added later. Benincasae Semen (Siguazi) 3 qian, pounded first. After taking this formula for one day, initially treat stasis while simultaneously treating asthma. The subsequent formula focuses solely on treating asthma.)
Han Mingliang's daughter-in-law, pregnant, suffered from febrile disease. All physicians feared miscarriage and generally prescribed blood-tonifying formulas. After ten days, the condition became critical. Mengying diagnosed: "The fetus has already rotted. It is necessary to purge urgently. There might be a chance of survival. If you wish to preserve the fetus, I do not know how." The family insisted on prescribing. He thus prescribed Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Regulate the Stomach Purge Decoction) combined with Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) plus Xiyangshen (American Ginseng), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), and Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix).
(All diseases are neither Excess nor Deficiency. Febrile disease is Excess Pathogen. Incorrect tonification aids heat and injures the fetus. Raw Rhubarb (Sheng Dahuang) 4 qian. Yuanmingfen (Mirabilite) 2 qian. Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao) 3 qian. Large Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Da Shengdi) 8 qian. American Ginseng (Xiyangshen) 3 qian. Flowering Ophiopogonis Tuber (Hua Maidong) 4 qian. Wine-stir-fried Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Jiu Chao Zhimu) 2 qian. Fresh Dendrobii Caulis (Xian Shihu) pounded and decocted first, 1 liang. Raw Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Sheng Niuxi) 2 qian. Powdered Rhinoceros Horn (Bang Xijiao) ground and taken with medicine 5 fen. For poor patients, remove Rhinoceros Horn and Dendrobii Caulis.) The fetus fell, indeed rotten and foul-smelling, but mental clarity returned immediately, and heat gradually subsided. Subsequently, he prescribed Xiyangshen (American Ginseng), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Fuling (Poria), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Douchi (Soja Glycines Semen Preparatum), Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus), and Hupo (Electri Succinum) to regulate. Porridge intake increased daily, and he recovered in over ten days.
(American Ginseng 3 qian. Sliced Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen Pian) 1 liang. Large Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Da Shengdi) 8 qian. These two are soaked in boiling water, dregs removed, and the decoction used to cook other herbs. Wine-stir-fried Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Jiu Chao Zhimu) 1.5 qian. Purple Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Zi Danshen) 3 qian. Powdered Moutan Cortex (Fen Danpi) 4 qian. Cloud Poria (Yun Fuling) 3 qian. Charred Crataegi Fructus (Jiao Shanzha) pounded 3 qian. Fresh Dendrobii Caulis (Xian Shihu) pounded and decocted first, 1 liang. Light salt-water fried Soja Glycines Semen Preparatum (Dan Shuiyan Chao Douchi) 1 qian. Leonuri Fructus (Chongweizi) pounded first 5 qian. Western Electri Succinum (Xi Hupo) ground and taken with medicine 8 fen. The main intent of this formula is to nourish Yin, clear heat, invigorate blood, resolve stasis, and calm the spirit. Poria stabilizes the Middle, preventing Yin medicines from damaging Yang. Charred Hawthorn acts as a counter-agent to invigorate blood. Douchi enters Yin medicines to ascend and clear heat.)
A young man suddenly suffered from nocturnal emission. After several days, his flesh wasted away significantly. Continuous administration of Yin-nourishing and astringent-emission medicines was like throwing water on a stone (ineffective). Mengying prescribed Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) plus Renshen (Ginseng), Longgu (Dragon Bone), and Muli (Oyster Shell). Effect was immediate upon ingestion. He recovered within a month.
(Nocturnal emission for several days with significant flesh wasting indicates Spleen failure, not Yin deficiency. Stir-fried Cinnamon Bark (Chao Cu Guimu) added later 1 qian. Baked Ginger (Weijiang) 3 qian. Earth-fried Licorice Root (Tu Chao Gancao) 3 qian. Earth-fried Radix Codonopsis (Tu Chao Ludangshen) 1 liang. Earth-fried Astragalus (Tu Chao Huangqi) 5 qian. Three Jujube fruits (Dazao). Vinegar-processed Dragon Bone (Cu Longgu) 1 qian. Vinegar-processed Oyster Shell (Cu Muli) 2 qian, pounded together first.)
Someone contracted a pathogenic factor in autumn. Daily treatment worsened the condition until delirium and convulsions occurred. Physicians Shi and Qin both claimed primordial deficiency was about to collapse and proposed severe tonification. Mengying diagnosed: "Do not fear. Unblocking collaterals and eliminating phlegm can lead to immediate recovery." He used Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Lingyangjiao (Saiga Antelope Horn), Sigualuo (Luffae Retinervae Fibroreticulum), Dongguazi (Benincasae Semen), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Sangzhi (Mulberry Twig), Juluo (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Congxu (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), and Dansing (Arisaema Cum Bile) as the formula. He dissolved 1 qian of Wanshi Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Ten Thousand People's Calorie Clearing Heart Pill) and administered it. Peace was achieved instantly.
(Delirium and limb tremors combined indicate Phlegm-Heat transforming into Wind. This is Pathogen Excess, not Primordial Deficiency. Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu) added later 2 fen. Saiga Antelope Horn (Lingjiao) ground and taken with medicine 5 fen. Luffae Retinervae Fibroreticulum (Sigualuo) 3 qian. Raw Benincasae Semen (Sheng Dongguazi) 4 qian. Raw Coicis Semen (Sheng Yiren) pounded 4 qian. Ginger-stir-fried Mulberry Twig (Shengjiang Chao Sangzhi) 3 qian. Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) wrapped in silk 1.5 qian. Pure Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jing Juluo) added later 8 fen. Fresh Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Xian Congxu) added later 6 fen. Sichuan Fritillariae Bulbus (Chuan Beimu) pounded 3 qian. Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Goutenggou) added later 4 qian. Aged Arisaema Cum Bile (Chen Dansing) stewed and taken with medicine 7 fen.)
Jin Yuanzhang, over seventy years old, suffered from hernia and syncope for a long time. Every illness occurred in winter, thought to be Cold. Taking hot medicines provided temporary relief, but never a complete cure. Mengying diagnosed: "Although Spleen and Kidney are cold, Liver Yang is internally abundant. Merely taking harsh Yangic medicines cannot hit the mark." He prescribed a formula of Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus), Rongrong (Cynomorii Herba), Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Tusisi (Cuscutae Semen), Lujiaoshuang (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Fuling (Poria), Lianshi (Toosendan Fructus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), and Juhe (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). He took it for years without issue.
(Winter is the time when Yin organs dominate. Hernia is a Liver disease. Kidney Yin cannot submerge and protect Liver Yang, hence hernia erupts in winter. Over seventy years old, this person receives ample Heaven-endowed Qi and can tolerate Yin medicines. Radix Codonopsis (Ludangshen) 3 qian. Stir-fried Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Chao Baizhu) 3 qian. Sweet Lycii Fructus (Gan Gouqi) 3 qian. Cynomorii Herba (Rongrong) 1.5 qian. Small Foeniculi Fructus (Xiao Huixiang) added later 5 fen. Box Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Xiang Guishen) 1.5 qian. Cuscutae Semen Cake (Tusibi) 3 qian. Shi Fusheng was ill and troubled by treatment from Chen Liushun. Mengying palpated: Pulse was deep, choppy, stagnant, and vague, indistinguishable in rate. Limbs were cold and fearful of cold. Saliva and foam surged upward. Urination and defecation were scanty and difficult. Mental energy was unclear. He said: "This is wind-dampness contracted on the road, failing to be dispersed. It has transformed into Heat. Adding warm tonification caused Qi mechanism to become even more obstructed. Evil heat has no outlet,必将 scorching fluids into Phlegm, reversing upward. Only by expanding the Qi mechanism will Phlegm move and Heat descend, and all ailments heal spontaneously." He prescribed Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Douchi (Soja Glycines Semen Preparatum), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Ziwan (Asteris Radix), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), and Lufuzhi (Radish Juice). After three doses, he rose. After a month of regulation, he recovered.
(Pulse is the pathway of Qi. Phlegm-Heat obstructing Qi prevents ascending and descending, responding to the finger. Hence the pulse is deep, choppy, stagnant, and vague, indistinguishable in rate. Limbs cold and fearful of cold: A mass of turbid Phlegm in the chest, Clear Yang instead rotates around the four sides. Qi not circulating leads to Exterior Deficiency, hence limbs cold and fearful of cold. Yang moves, Yin is still. Heat pathogens mostly ascend. Heat evil fans Phlegm to reverse upward, hence saliva and foam surge. Urination and defecation scanty: Qi not ascending means not descending either. Phlegm-Heat obstructing Lung, Lung Qi not moving, hence urination and defecation scanty. Mental energy unclear: Lung is like a canopy covering the Heart. Heat obstructing Lung puts Heart in a passive position. How can the Heavenly Lord be at peace? Hence mental energy is unclear. Ginger-processed Coptidis Rhizoma (Jiangzhi Yalian) 8 fen. Ginger-processed Scutellariae Radix (Jiangzhi Kuqin) 2 qian. Stir-fried Aurantii Fructus (Chao Zhishi) 1 qian. Black Gardeniae Fructus Skin (Hei Zhipi) 1.5 qian. Sichuan Fritillariae Bulbus (Chuan Beimu) pounded 3 qian. Bitter Armeniacae Semen Paste (Ku Xingni) 1 qian. Ginger Bambusae Caulis in Taenia (Jiang Zhuru) 3 qian. After taking this formula for one dose, change formula: remove Zhizi and Douchi. Add Fang Tongcao 3 qian. Yellow Curcumae Radix (Huang Yujin) 8 fen. Asteris Radix (Ziwan Rong) added later 1 qian. Radish Juice (Lufuzhi) taken with medicine 2 qian. After taking this formula for two doses.)
Mr. Wang contracted a pathogenic factor in summer. Xie Shujin treated him. Although the disease receded and appetite returned, he could not sit or stand, resembling paralysis. It had lasted over a month. Mengying viewed it and said: "This is due to excessive use of exterior-releasing medicines, excessive sweating, injuring both Qi and Blood. Limbs lose nutrition. Pulse is faint and fine. Tongue is bright without coating." He prescribed a large dose of Renshen (Ginseng), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Tusisi (Cuscutae Semen), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Yurou (Corni Fructus), Sangzhi (Mulberry Twig). After dozens of doses, he could rise.
(Blood relies on Qi to generate. Excessive exterior release injures Qi, and Blood is also injured. Inability to sit/stand: Qi injury means Qi cannot descend to nourish waist and Kidneys. Blood injury means Blood cannot ascend to connect with Clear Yang. Pulse faint and fine: Fine pulse is worse than faint. Faint indicates weak Yang, Fine indicates weak Yin. Combined with bright tongue without coating, Yin deficiency is worse than Yang deficiency. Radix Codonopsis (Ludangshen) 5 qian. Raw Astragalus (Sheng Huangqi) 4 qian. Pure Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Jing Guishen) 2 qian. Stir-fried Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Chao Baizhu) 3 qian. Stir-fried Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Chao Shudi) 8 qian. Cotton Eucommiae Cortex (Mian Duzhong) 3 qian. Cuscutae Semen Cake (Tusibi) 4 qian. Processed Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Zhi Niuxi) 2 qian. Sweet Lycii Fructus (Gan Gouqi) 3 qian. Huai Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Huai Shanyao) 4 qian. Dried Chaenomelis Fructus (Chen Mugua) 3 qian. Corni Fructus (Shanyurou) 3 qian. Fat Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Fei Yuzhu) 3 qian. Sichuan Drynariae Rhizoma (Chuan Xuduan) 3 qian. Wine-stir-fried Mulberry Twig (Jiu Chao Sangzhi) 4 qian. Using Renshen and Baizhu to tonify Qi to generate Blood. Using Shudi, Tusisi, and Gouqi to nourish Yin. Using Duzhong, Yurou, and Xuduan to tonify Yang within Yin, enabling Yin to ascend and interact with Yang. Using Shanyao and Yuzhu to harmonize between Yin and Yang. Using Niuxi and Sangzhi to descend separately into collaterals.)
A laborer with inherent Yin deficiency suddenly contracted wind-dampness. Both knees suffered stabbing pain and soreness. Unable to stand even slightly. Mengying prescribed Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) plus Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) and Doujuan (Sojae Semen Preparatum). One dose brought improvement, two doses cured.
(Inherent Yin deficiency. Wind-dampness strikes both knees. Method should be nourishing Yin to treat the root, using light and dispersing wind-damp medicines to treat the branch. Any disease in the Lower Body Blood aspect cannot be fully resolved unless guided to the Qi aspect. Soreness is Heat scorching fluids. Large Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Da Shudi) 1 liang. Corni Fructus (Shanyurou) 2 qian. Huai Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Huai Shanyao) 4 qian. Cloud Poria (Yun Fuling) 1.5 qian. Powdered Moutan Cortex (Fen Danpi) 2 qian. Raw Alisma Rhizome (Sheng Zexie) 1 qian. Western Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Xi Duhuo) added later 3 qian. Soybean Preparatum (Dadoujuan) stir-fried with Ephedra (Mahuang) water added later 3 qian. Those with Yin deficiency cannot produce sweat without nourishing Yin.)
Zhang Yangzhi's wife ate and drank normally, but her body emaciated. Menstruation was regular, but color varied between purple and pale. Both calves were hot, while other parts remained normal. Complexion was greenish-yellow with hidden black qi, resembling Deficient-Cold. Many medicines were ineffective. Mengying palpated: Pulse seemed deficient and fine, but at the deep level slightly wiry and slippery. He said: "This is Yangming Excess and Shaoyin Insufficiency. Zhang Zhongjing has the method of urgent purging to preserve Yin. However, that is for external contraction. Excess pathogens can be directly purged. This is internal injury. Formless Heat should be treated with Sweet-Cold. The principle is similar, but the medicine is different." He gifted Xiyangshen (American Ginseng), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Sheng Baishao (Raw White Peony Root), Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex), Fuling (Poria), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Lianshi (Toosendan Fructus), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Tiantong (Asparagi Radix). After taking several jin, the black qi retreated, muscles filled, calf heat disappeared, and menstruation regulated.
(Eating normally means Qi aspect is healthy. Emaciation means Blood is injured by Heat, so Blood does not nourish muscles and luster. Menstruation regular means Qi can generate Blood. Purple/pale variation means latent Heat in Blood. Blood Heat attacks Qi, so Qi is also abnormal. Qi not filling Blood leads to pale color; purple indicates stagnant Heat. Calves are Foot Yangming area. Calf heat indicates Stomach Heat. Hidden black qi on face: Heat stagnation is severe, unable to manifest outwardly. Palpation focuses on deep level. Heat pathogen obstructs Qi mechanism, pulse quality cannot express on superficial level. Raw Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao) decocted first 8 qian. American Ginseng (Xiyangshen) 3 qian. Wine-stir-fried Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Jiu Chao Zhimu) 2 qian. Black Gardeniae Fructus Skin (Hei Zhipi) 3 qian. Red Poria Skin (Chi Lingpi) 3 qian. Southern Trichosanthis Radix (Nan Huafen) 3 qian. Flowering Ophiopogonis Tuber (Hua Maidong) 4 qian. Fine Akebiae Caulis (Xi Mutong) 1 qian. After several doses, remove Shigao, Zhipi, Xiyangshen, Huafen, Mutong, and Zhimu. Add Large Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Da Shengdi) 8 qian. Bright Asparagi Radix (Ming Tiantong) sliced 6 qian. Powdered Moutan Cortex (Fen Danpi) 4 qian. Stir-fried Phellodendri Cortex (Chao Chuan Huangbo) 1 qian. Raw White Peony Root (Sheng Baishao) 3 qian. Toosendan Fructus (Chuan Lianshi) pounded first 3 qian.)
Mrs. Yao suffered postpartum delirium, sweating, and syncope. Skin and muscles were swollen. Physicians administered tonifying deficiency, breaking blood, dispelling spirits, and calming spirit medicines, none worked. Mengying asked about lochia; it was still flowing. He said: "Physicians must consider this a strange disease. Actually, it is easy to cure. Mr. Jin Shangtao once treated a similar case, recorded in Shen Yaofu's Gynecology Compilation. The formula uses Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Dansing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), Fuling (Poria), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Qu (Medicated Leaven). Named Juan Yin Liu Shen Tang (Eliminate Drink Six Gods Decoction). Postpartum lochia flowing with delirium mostly belongs to Phlegm-Drink. Do not mistakenly administer attacking or tonifying medicines. This soup shows miraculous effect. Follow the formula for good recovery."
(Delirium, sweating, syncope, skin/muscle swelling: Disease is in Qi aspect. Lochia still flowing: Blood aspect is healthy. Thus, delirium is determined to be Qi aspect Phlegm-Drink disease. Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu) added later 6 fen. Aged Arisaema Cum Bile (Chen Dansing) 1 qian, stewed and taken with medicine. Cloud Poria (Yun Fuling) dried sliced 3 qian. Lai's Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum (Laishi Juhong) 1.5 qian. Pinelliae Rhizoma Qu (Banxia Qu) pounded 4 qian.)
Wang Binghua's wife suffered from tongue ulcers. Pain hindered eating and drinking. Internal and external treatments were ineffective. He said: "This is Blood Deficiency with Floating Fire." He applied the method for postpartum fever. He prescribed Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Jiu Chao Baishao (Wine-stir-fried White Peony Root), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Fuling (Poria), and Pao Jiang (Roasted Ginger). The disease vanished as if lost.
(Tongue red and pulse rapid indicates Yin Deficiency. Tongue red and moist, pulse empty and rapid indicates Yang within Yin is also deficient. Stir-fried Loose Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Chao Song Shudi) 5 qian. Pure Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Jing Guishen) 3 qian. Stir-fried Licorice Root (Chao Gancao) 3 qian. Wine-stir-fried White Peony Root (Jiu Chao Baishao) 1.5 qian. White Poria (Baifuling) dried sliced 3 qian. Roasted Dried Ginger (Pao Ganjiang) 8 fen.)
An elderly man suffered from cholera-like disorder. Eyes closed, hiccups occurred. Physician claimed collapse was imminent, intending to prescribe Guifu (Cinnamon and Aconite) to restore Yang, but did not take it. Mengying asked and learned urine was red, mouth dry, pulse rapid. He changed to regulating Lung and Stomach medicines. Gradually he stabilized.
(Eyes are the opening of the Liver. Liver Heat rebelling upward causes eyes to close. Hiccups are movement images. Heat injuring Lung Qi causes hiccups. Red urine and dry mouth indicate Lung Heat and Fluid Deficiency. Rapid pulse indicates Yin Deficiency with concurrent Yang Deficiency. Black Gardeniae Fructus Skin (Hei Zhipi) 3 qian. Wine-stir-fried Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Jiu Chao Zhimu) 1.5 qian. Wine-stir-fried Coptidis Rhizoma (Jiu Chao Chuanlian) 6 fen. Light Soja Glycines Semen Preparatum (Dan Douchi) added later 3 qian. Southern Trichosanthis Radix (Nan Huafen) 3 qian. Cloud Poria (Yun Fuling) 3 qian. Bitter Armeniacae Semen Paste (Ku Xingni) 1.5 qian. Ginger Bambusae Caulis in Taenia (Jiang Zhuru) 3 qian. Fresh Reed Rhizome (Xian Lu Gen) 8 qian.)
