Wind-cold Qi stagnates in the skin and hair, causing blood to fail to nourish the muscle surface. The skin becomes dry and painful, and the hands and feet appear as if devoid of skin; this gives rise to soreness and pain. First, wash with scallion soup, apply Runji Ointment (Moisturizing Muscle Paste), keep warm and avoid wind and cold, and it will heal spontaneously. If it recurs every winter, crush garlic that has been sun-dried during the Sanfu (Dog Days) period and rub it on the affected area intermittently three times; it will not recur again. The Classics state: "Treat cold with heat," which makes the principle very clear.
Edema occurring after recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease should be treated according to the cause: if due to water retention, diuresis is appropriate; if due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency and poor appetite, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Decoction) added with Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), and Amomi Fructus (Sharen) is suitable; if the Stomach Qi is not deficient, cooking a single herb, Phytolaccae Radix (Shanglu), into porridge is also effective. Edema following severe Shanghan disease does not need worry; simply regulate diet, abstain from alcohol and sexual indulgence, strengthen Stomach Qi, and the edema will subside naturally.
When the Yangming channel abnormally lacks sweat, and the skin feels like insects crawling, it is because the Stomach governs muscles and the Yangming channel has been deficient for a long time; Shuzhifu Tang (Atractylodes and Aconite Decoction) or Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction to Establish the Middle) should be used. If wind-heat is flourishing, accompanied by body itching, fever, lack of sweat, dry mouth and tongue, and constipation of both urine and stool, Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Powder to Unblock the Hero) added with Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) is suitable. If body itching is caused by wind patterns, Xiaoxuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) with Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) removed and Bryoniae Radix (Baifuzi) added is suitable. If body itching is caused by blood deficiency, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Lemnae Herba (Fuping), Tribuli Fructus (Jili), and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) is suitable. Generalized empty itching indicates that blood fails to nourish the couli (skin pores and interstices); Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) decocted, mixed with powder of Lemnae Herba (Fuping) and taken orally, is indicated.
In individuals with deficiency and timidity, where Qi and Blood are disordered, masses may appear on the limbs, either painful or painless. If wind invades the meridians causing limb pain, or if there is tendon spasm and bone pain in the four limbs, the Congyi Method (Scallion Moxibustion/Ironing) should be used, and the swelling will subside spontaneously. This is a method of tonifying Yang Qi to circulate and dissipate stagnation.
Congyi Method (Scallion Ironing): Cut scallion heads finely, crush them, stir-fry until hot, and iron the affected area. Replace when cool; re-ironing the swollen area will lead to self-healing. This method is also used for swelling and pain caused by traumatic injuries. For any mass, cook one or two liang of glutinous rice or steamed zongzi, add a little salt while hot, add several chopped scallions and a small pill of Baijiu Qu (White Liquor Ferment), pound thoroughly into a paste, heat it, apply to the affected area, wrap with oiled paper and cloth, and the mass will subside.
Another prescription: One or two pills of Baijiu Qu (White Liquor Ferment) ground into powder, mixed with hot wine fried until fragrant, applied topically, can resolve internally.
Xiaoku Zhitong Dan (Mass-Resolving and Pain-Relieving Pill) (from *Bingjian*): Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (each 3 qian), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Coicis Semen (Yiyiren), Poria (Fuling) (each 5 qian), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (each 1 qian), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi) (0.5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, symptoms lighten; after four doses, pain stops; after twenty doses, the mass completely disappears.
