Feng Luzhan stated: Chong She (Re-tongue) refers to a condition where, upon birth, a swelling protrudes from the upper palate, resembling a suspended abscess. This is caused by heat in the Spleen and Stomach, preventing Qi and Blood from consolidating. The treatment method should promptly involve wrapping a long needle with silk cotton, exposing the needle tip, and puncturing the swollen area to drain the evil blood, which will cause the swelling to subside. If it recurs, puncture again; otherwise, it will interfere with nursing. Ultimately, this arises because after birth, if Qi and Blood consolidate into blood, the mouth, tongue, throat, and cheeks remain clean; but if Qi and Blood do not consolidate and fetal toxins attack upwards, this condition forms. (From *Jin Nang*)
He also stated: On the second day after birth, inspect the infant's mouth and upper palate. If there are white blisters, gently scrape them open with a silver ear pick. The blister fluid must be scraped out and prevented from falling into the throat. Then, apply Jingmo (Beijing Ink) to the lesion. Once these blisters mature, they become difficult to scrape, and the infant will refuse milk, potentially developing conditions such as Jue Kou (Lockjaw). If an infant does not cry upon touching the ground, cannot swallow milk, and appears lifeless, urgently inspect the throat. There may be a blister on the upper palate anterior to the Frenulum Linguae (Xuan Yong). Break it with a fingernail, wipe away the evil blood with cloth, ensuring it is not swallowed, and the infant will regain voice and ability to nurse. (From *Bao Sheng Sui Shi*)
Dou Minglin stated: Sores on the upper palate resembling yellow millet grains, accompanied by a fishy odor in the mouth, and external signs of cold hands and cold feet, indicate accumulated heat in the Spleen Meridian. The upper palate belongs to the Spleen, and Spleen Qi connects to the mouth; thus, when the Spleen Meridian is affected by heat, sores appear on the upper palate. First, use Clam Water (Bang Shui), dip a cloth in it, wring it out, and wipe the affected area. It is appropriate to administer Qing Pi Jiang Huo Tang (Spleen-Clearing Fire-Descending Decoction), followed by blowing Bingpian San (Borneol Powder) onto the lesion, which is invariably effective. One should abstain from alcohol and sexual indulgence. (From *Quan Shu*)
Appendix: Method for obtaining Clam Water: Wash clams thoroughly, crush them, and extract the water. Filter the clear liquid using wet cotton cloth. If summer linen (ramie cloth) is used, its pores become loose and slippery when wet; if leeches from the clam filter into the water bowl, what would happen if accidentally ingested? Cotton cloth pores become tight when wet, preventing leeches from passing through, hence it is used for oral and throat conditions. This condition belongs to the Fire of Taiyang, yet clams are creatures of the river, belonging to the Essence of Taiyin; thus, water is borrowed to assist in quenching fire.
He also stated: The cause of sores on the upper palate is accumulated heat in the Upper Jiao and stagnation of Spleen Qi. Since the upper palate belongs to the Spleen, heat in the Spleen Meridian leads to sores on the upper palate. It is essential to administer herbs that clear the Upper Diaphragm and dispel Wind-Phlegm.
