There may be a feeling of fullness and oppression in the chest, or urgency and distension in the lower abdomen. This is the manifestation of distension caused by Qi stagnation.
[Causes of Abdominal Distension due to Qi Stagnation] It may be due to anger injuring the Liver (Liver), causing Liver Qi (Liver Qi) depression and constraint; or it may be due to overthinking injuring the Spleen (Spleen), causing Spleen Qi (Spleen Qi) knotting and stagnation. [Pulse of Abdominal Distension due to Qi Stagnation] The pulse is mostly Chen (Deep) and Se (Choppy), or Chen (Deep) and Xian (Wiry), or Chen (Deep) and Fu (Hidden). The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: "When the pulse feels deep upon palpation, one knows it is Qi..." [Text cuts off here]

[Symptoms of Abdominal Distension due to Qi Scattering] Distension comes and goes; Qi is weak, speech is faint, eyes are slow but spirit is clear. Symptoms decrease slightly when resting and become urgent/distended during movement. This is abdominal distension caused by Qi scattering.
[Causes of Abdominal Distension due to Qi Scattering] It may be due to excessive labor injuring Middle Qi (Middle Qi); or due to prolonged illness damaging Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi). If the Lung (Lung) cannot regulate water passages, the Spleen (Spleen) cannot transport and transform, and the Kidney (Kidney) cannot secure and store, then True Qi (True Qi) scatters, resulting in abdominal distension.
[Pulse of Abdominal Distension due to Qi Scattering] All six pulses are powerless, empty and large without root, floating, slow, scattered, and slow. There may be signs of spirit separation and rapid pulse.
[Treatment of Abdominal Distension due to Qi Scattering] For weak Qi and faint speech, use Shengmai San (Generate Pulse Powder). For distension and urgency during movement that decreases at rest, use Wuji Tang (Wu-Ji Decoction), adding herbs that astringe Qi. If Qi does not return to its origin, use Duqi Wan (Duqi Pill) and Nayqi Wan (Receive Qi Pill). If Qi deficiency is extreme, administer Sizijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) and Shenju Jian (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction) as a vehicle.
