It is especially suitable for use when the Yin-Yang and exterior-interior patterns of Zhang disease (Malarial pestilence) are not yet distinguished.
Loquat Leaf (Pipaye, *Eriobotryae Folium*, remove hairs, roast with ginger juice, 1 liang), Dendrobium (Shihu, *Dendrobii Caulis*, stir-fry slightly after mixing with wine, 3 qian), Eucommia Bark (Duzhong, *Eucommiae Cortex*, stir-fry with wine and ginger juice, 3 qian), Green Tangerine Peel (Qingpi, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride*, 5 qian), Licorice Root (Gancao, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*, 1.5 liang), Patchouli Leaf (Huoxiangye, *Agastaches Herba*, 3 qian), Rice Sprout (Guya, *Oryzae Fructus Germinatus*, stir-fried, 5 qian), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*, remove white pith, 3 qian), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*, stir-fried, 2 liang), Amomum Fruit (Sharen, *Amomi Fructus*, 2 liang), Coix Seed (Yiyiren, *Coicis Semen*, stir-fried, 1 liang), Suifengzi (*Biswollenussamen* / substitute with Xiaohezi/Small Chebula Fruit if unavailable, 1 qian), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia, *Pinelliae Rhizoma*, prepared with ginger juice, 3 qian), Clove Bud (Dingxiang, *Caryophylli Flos*, 5 qian, do not roast over fire), Costus Root (Muxiang, *Aucklandiae Radix*, 3 qian), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi, *Mori Radicis Cortex*, stir-fried, 5 qian), Areca Seed (Binglang, *Arecae Semen*, stir-fried, 5 qian), Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi, *Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus*, stir-fried, 5 qian), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu, *Massa Medicata Fermentata*, stir-fried, 1 liang), Ginseng Root (Renshen, *Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma*, remove rhizome, 1 liang), White Cardamom Seed (Baiko, *Cardamomi Albi Semen*, peel and stir-fry, 5 qian), Poria (Fuling, *Poria*, 1 liang, remove skin), Betel Nut Peel (Dafupi, *Arecae Pericarpium*, stir-fried, 3 qian), Agarwood (Chenxiang, *Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum*, 3 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. For each dose, add three slices of fresh ginger and two dates, decoct in water, and take warm. Take at any time without restriction. This formula treats common colds in all four seasons, harmonizes Yin and Yang, prevents drastic fluctuations, and brings peace within a prescribed period.
If used to treat Wuye, add one dried persimmon calyx, decoct together. If used to treat Geqi (diaphragmatic qi stagnation), vomiting, reversal, emaciation, and exhaustion, add three cun of scallion white and five dates, decoct together. Women may also take this formula. For Zhang disease with fever, take when cool. For elderly or deficient persons with constipation, add a small amount of honey, decoct, and take cool.
Zhang disease often arises from the Spleen and Stomach contracting cold pathogens. This formula uses Ginseng, Atractylodes, Poria, and Licorice, along with Tangerine Peel and Pinellia (resembling Liujunzi Tang) to tonify Spleen Qi and promote fluid metabolism to resolve phlegm; uses Clove, Costus, Amomum, White Cardamom, and Patchouli to open the stomach, eliminate accumulated cold, and warm the middle jiao; uses Green Tangerine Peel to regulate Qi; uses Rice Sprout and Medicated Leaven to digest food accumulation. In Zhang disease, heat in the upper jiao affects the Lung most severely; Loquat Leaf, Coix Seed, and Mulberry Root Bark nourish the Lung and dissipate Lung heat; the sour properties of Schisandra and Suifengzi tonify Lung Qi and astringe Lung Qi. When Yang Qi fails to descend in Zhang disease, Areca Seed, Betel Nut Peel, and Agarwood descend Qi. If Qi does not descend, cold generates in the lower part; if lower cold exists, Kidney lacks Yang; Dendrobium and Eucommia, combined with Agarwood, guide Yang Qi into the Kidney to warm the waist and knees. Therefore, Li Daizhi stated that this formula is suitable for Zhang disease, capable of ascending and descending Yin and Yang, and can be taken even when the syndrome patterns are not yet distinct.
