Treats malarial disease presenting with heat above and cold below. Regulates the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang. Also treats phlegm-qi obstruction, excess above and deficiency below, blazing heart fire, and depletion of kidney water. It also treats women with long-standing coldness in the Blood Sea (Chong and Ren meridians), leading to infertility, red and white leukorrhea. All conditions belonging to deficiency-cold are treated together.
Heixi Dan (Black Tin Pill):
Black Tin (2 liang), Sulfur (2 liang), Rougui (Cinnamon Twig, 5 qian), Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood), Fuzi (Aconite Root, processed, skin and lateral roots removed), Gubuzhi (Psoralea Fruit, stir-fried), Xiaohuixiang (Fennel Fruit, stir-fried), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Huluba (Trigonella Foenum-graecum Seed, soaked in wine and stir-fried), Roudoukou (Nutmeg, baked in flour), Yangqishi (Lecontite, finely ground and levigated via water flotation), Chuanliuzi (Sichuan Chinaberry Fruit, steamed, skin and seeds removed, each 2 liang).
Take a new iron pot. Process according to the usual method. Smelt black mercury sulfide on the ground. Remove the "fire toxicity" and wait for it to cool before grinding into an extremely fine powder. Grind the remaining herbs into powder as well.
Combine all powders. Grind continuously from morning until evening. The process is complete when a black luster appears. Use wine and wheat paste as binders to form pills, sized like *Morus alba* (mulberry) seeds. Dry them in the shade and store in cloth bags. Rub until smooth and glossy. Take 30–50 pills per dose, swallowed with salted water.
Alternatively, swallow with jujube decoction. For women, swallow with mugwort decoction.
Rationale: For malarial disease with heat above and cold below, the intense heat of Sulfur assists the True Fire. Assisted by the extreme yin nature of Black Tin, it treats diseases of Yin excess repelling Yang. Muxiang regulates Qi; Roudoukou descends Qi; Chenxiang lowers Qi. Combined with Gubuzhi, Xiaohuixiang, and Huluba, they guide Yang Qi into the Kidney. Rougui protects the Kidney. Fuzi guides heat downwards into the Kidney. Yangqishi tonifies the Kidney and replenishes essence, reaching the highest point of the head, guiding Yang Qi down to the Kidney meridian. Together, they warm and tonify the Lower Origin, stabilize and secure Yang Qi, making this formula suitable for malarial disease.
Zhaoyao Dan (Rescue Pill):
Treats malarial disease presenting with excess above and deficiency below. Regulates the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang. Also treats diarrhea resembling water caused by latent summerheat, and incessant vomiting.
Xiaoshi (Saltpeter/Niter, 3 liang), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel, 2 liang, pith removed), Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung, 2 liang, sand and stones removed), Chenpi (Dried Tangerine Peel, 2 liang, white pith removed), Xuanjingshi (Mirabilite/Natron, 2 liang, finely ground and levigated), Sulfur (2 liang, made into powder).
Mix with Wulingzhi and stir-fry in a pot over low heat. Stir with willow branches. Do not use high heat. Grind again into an extremely fine powder. Use vinegar and wheat paste to form pills, sized like beans. Take 20 pills per dose, swallowed with rice drink.
Rationale: Malarial disease caused by internal injury from raw/cold foods and external contraction of summerheat leads to failure of Qi to ascend and descend. Niter is cold in nature; assisted by Qingpi and Chenpi which have dispersing and regulating properties, and the great heat of Sulfur which assists True Yang, combined with the extreme yin nature of Niter and Xuanjingshi, latent Yang and repelled Yin both recede. Wulingzhi regulates Qi. Together, they unblock and benefit the San Jiao (Triple Burner) and regulate the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang. This formula is especially suitable for malarial disease that strikes suddenly and causes chaotic disturbances.
