Treats the syndrome of miasma malaria characterized by excess in the upper body and deficiency in the lower body. With phlegm-fluids obstructing and blocking the airways, this medicine is most capable of regulating the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang, suppressing floating Yang Qi, harmonizing the Five Zang Organs, and supporting Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi). Mercury (8 liang), Sulfur (2 liang). Take the above herbs and stir-fry them in a new iron pot until they turn into sand with smoke rising. Immediately add vinegar and wine. After grinding finely, place them into a "Water-Fire Cauldron" (a specialized fuming vessel). Seal the mouth with red stone powder mixed with vinegar. Bind tightly with iron wire. Reinforce the seal with salt earth from a lamp holder. Dry in the sun. Use charcoal for calcination weighing twenty jin. Calcine until cracks appear on the cauldron. Use a brush dipped in red stone powder paste to frequently smear the cracks. Continue until the fire burns out completely. Remove after overnight. Grind into fine powder. Form pills using rice flour paste, sized like hemp seeds. Take 20 pills per dose. Administer with Jujube Decoction. Alternatively, administer with Rice Drink or Ginseng Decoction. Miasma malaria often occurs due to abnormal heat in autumn and winter seasons, causing Yang Qi to leak outward. The Yang Qi floats and fails to descend, while the Lower Origin (Kidney system) is deficient and cold. This formula uses the intensely hot Sulfur to tonify the True Fire of the Lower Origin. It assists with Mercury, a substance of extreme Yin nature, combined with the refined meaning of "Water and Fire having achieved harmony." It can expel cold that causes rejection and blockage, and also addresses hidden Yang. It greatly descends the Yuan Qi of the Upper Jiao and suppresses it at the Lower Origin, preventing it from leaking outward. It is highly suitable for treating miasma malaria.
Treats external contraction of Wind-Cold, internal injury from raw and cold foods, or deficiency of Qi in the Five Zang Organs, where Yin and Yang contend with each other, resulting in miasma malaria. Manifestations include more chills than fever, or only chills without fever.
Large Aconite Root (one piece. Roasted over charcoal fire, soaked in salt water, roasted again and soaked again, repeated seven times. Peel off skin and remove umbilical scar, slice).
Take the above herb, add seven slices of Fresh Ginger and seven dates. Decoct in water. Take warm on an empty stomach on the morning when the attack is due. Still eat three to five dates afterwards. Observing dietary restrictions is essential. Cold miasma arises from cold pathogens. This formula uses Large Aconite Root to dispel cold-phlegm and guide the Yang Qi of the Upper Jiao downward into the extreme Yin to achieve the interaction between Heaven and Earth. This aligns with Wang Bing's saying: "Tonify the source of Fire to dissipate Yin shadows." Adding the sweetness of Jujube to warm and tonify Spleen Qi, the cold-phlegm subsides and miasma malaria ceases.
Treats irregularity in emotions (anger and joy), excessive diet, and combined labor and sexual exertion, leading to contention between Yin and Yang, accumulation of phlegm-fluids, which contend with Defensive Qi, manifesting as miasma malaria.
Ginseng Root, Pinellia Tuber (soaked in boiling water seven times), Poria, Atractylodes Rhizome, Tsaoko Fruit (peeled), Tangerine Peel, Licorice Root (roasted, halved dosage), Mume Fruit (pitted).
Process the above into a powder. When taking, use Fresh Ginger and Jujube. Add a little salt. After a meal period, wrap in thick paper, moisten with water. Slow-roast until fragrant and cooked. Dry thoroughly. Take half a liang per dose. Decoct in clear water. Take three doses consecutively before the onset of the disease.
Although miasma malaria is caused by climatic factors, if a normal person has substantial Spleen and Stomach Yuan Qi, even severe miasma toxins will have no effect on the body. Only when anger injures Qi and diet injures the Spleen, causing Yuan Qi to be insecure, can the miasma toxin invade. As stated in the Classics: "Where pathogenic factors gather, the Qi must be deficient." This formula uses the sweet and warm properties of Ginseng, Atractylodes, Poria, and Licorice to tonify the Spleen and benefit Yuan Qi. It adds the pungency of Tangerine Peel to regulate Qi, the pungency of Pinellia to dry dampness and promote phlegm resolution, the pungency of Tsaoko to digest food, and the sourness of Mume Fruit to astringe Qi and generate fluids. Ginger and Jujube tonify Yuan Qi. Together, they form a formula to intercept malaria, embodying the principle that when the gentleman (righteous Qi) fills the room, the petty man (pathogen) naturally retreats.
