Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Kuandonghua (Flos Senecionis Tussilaginis), Sangbai Pi (Cortex Mori Radicis), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae), Wumei (Fructus Mumei), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Yingsuke (Pericarpium Papaveris).
For chronic cough that does not cease, with slight redness of the sclera and presence of ocular discharge, this formula is indicated.
New-onset cough is easy to cure, while chronic cough is difficult to cure. The reason for its difficulty lies in the transmission and deepening of pathogenic factors. Therefore, prolonged cough leads to red eyes and production of ocular discharge. Here, nine specific herbs are combined to treat the Lung. However, the classics state: "All five Zang organs can cause cough." Thus, treating only the Lung becomes a secondary consideration. When encountering such symptoms, one must be cautious and not rigidly adhere to a single approach.
Poem says: Nine Immortals contain Ren Shen, Beimu, Kuandonghua; Jiegeng, Sangbai Pi, Wuweizi are excellent; also Wumei, Yingsuke; made into Ejiao pills offered to the host.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Wumei (Fructus Mumei), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii), Roudoukou (Arillus Myristicae), Helile (Fructus Chebulae), Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae).
When excessive dispersing treatments lead to scattered eye symptoms, diarrhea, muscle wasting, sunken eyeballs, or recurrent eyelid swelling, this formula is indicated.
Prolonged dispersing damages Qi, excessive attacking depletes Blood; this is the principle. Excessive dispersing leads to deficiency-cold in the intestines and stomach, naturally resulting in insecurity of the Lower Yuan, muscle wasting, and sunken eyeballs. If eyelids swell again, it is due to deficiency allowing Dampness to invade. In this formula, Ganjiang, Fuzi, Baizhu, and Ganwarm the Middle and dispel Cold; Roudoukou assists, warming the lower diaphragm and treating slippery discharge. Gouqizi, Dihuang, Wuweizi, and Shanyao stabilize Kidney Qi; Ren Shen assists, also unblocking Spleen Spirit and resolving deficiency edema. Furthermore, the sourness of Wumei astringes fluids, moistening those who are dry; the astringency of Helile secures against collapse, closing those who are too open. Hence it is called Jin Suo Gu Yuan Wan (Golden Lock Securing the Origin Pill). By its name, one might infer this formula has miraculous effects.
Poem says: Securing the Origin values Dihuang and Gouqi; Fuzi aids Li Zhong drugs and Wuweizi; Roudoukou, Wumei, Helile accompany; without Golden Lock, Shen Men closes itself.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Tiandong (Radix Asparagi), Baijuhua (Flos Chrysanthemi), Ziwan (Radix Asteris), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Baihe (Bulbus Lilii).
For uncontrollable ocular discharge and tears, this formula is indicated.
Ocular discharge and tears indicate Pathogenic factors in the Lung. Prolonged flow indicates severe impairment of Lung Metal. When exhausted and deficient, tonify its Mother (Spleen); thus Ren Shen, Shanyao, and Zhi Gancao are used. Since the Child can make the Mother solid (tonifying Kidney to enrich Lung), Dihuang, Danggui, and Wuweizi are used. Among them, Baijuhua, Tiandong, Ziwan, Huangqin, and Baihe are primary herbs for the Lung Meridian, used with both tonification and draining methods, thereby driving out pathogens and supporting healthy Qi.
Poem says: Chrysanthemum wine is sweet, mild, and good; drinking it daily promotes health; Ren Shen and Shanyao gather herbs, Tiandong returns; full of Dihuang clouds, cold Ziwan.
