[Formula 35: Yangxin Tang (Nourishing the Heart Decoction)]
Ingredients: Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Fermentatum), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bairen (Platycladi Semen), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex).
The Heart stores the Shen (Spirit); when the Shen is sufficient, wisdom and clarity arise within the heart chamber. Therefore, the Heart is also known as "Lingtai" (Spirit Platform) or "Shenshi" (Spirit Chamber). If Heart Blood is deficient and weak, pathogenic factors will invade, causing palpitations and fright.
The Classics state: "Stillness allows the Spirit to be stored"; nourishing Qi is for calming the Spirit, thus Ginseng, Poria, and Licorice are used. It is also said: "Dryness leads to consumption"; moistening dryness is for unblocking Blood, thus Angelica, Schisandra, and the two seeds (Platycladi and Ziziphi) are used. Chuanxiong and Pinellium regulate the Liver and awaken the Spleen, benefiting the mother-child relationship of the Heart (Liver is the Mother of Heart, Spleen is the Child of Heart). Cinnamon Twig and Polygala serve as guiding agents, following the desires of the Heart. If one wishes to soothe the mother and child, ensure Blood and Qi flourish, yet the Spirit does not return to its chamber, what kind of intention is this?
Poem states: "Ginseng, Poria, Chuanxiong, Licorice, Cinnamon; Jujube Seed, Platycladi, and Schisandra; Pinellium, Angelica, Scutellaria, Nourish the Heart with Polygala."
[Formula 36: Another Formula]
Ingredients: Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Lujiao (Deer Antler Glue), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Bairen (Platycladi Semen), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangjing (Polygonati Rhizoma, steamed with honey), Longyanrou (Longan Aril).
The Heart commands all affairs and is the Sovereign of the human body. If the Sovereign loses virtue and fails to cherish himself, orders will issue from below, and the Twelve Organs will sequentially disintegrate. Urgently, Angelica, Rehmannia, Schisandra, Deer Antler Glue, and Longan Aril should be used to nourish Ying (Nutritive) Qi; Ginseng, Astragalus, Dioscorea, Poria with Hostwood, and Licorice should be used to benefit Wei (Defensive) Qi; Platycladi Seed, Ziziphi Seed, Polygonatum Odoratum Seed, Ophiopogon, and Polygonatum Rhizome should be used to dispel dryness. In this way, the central authority is rectified, and governance is renewed daily. Furthermore, assisting virtue, like Chu Suiliang harmonizing the light, there is no need to worry about inner resentment or being troubled by petty people. For those whose constitution has always been deficient in Qi and unable to remain tranquil, and for symptoms after illness such as anxious labor, palpitations, insomnia, spontaneous sweating, and chaotic dreams, taking this formula feels superior to the previous one.
Poem states: "In May, Polygonatum Odoratum fills the ground; Deer, Dioscorea, Ginseng, Ophiopogon, and Licorice grow lush; Dragon saliva, Platycladi, and Jujube Seed burn fragrant at night; Calm the Spirit to achieve deep reflection."
[Formula 37: Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder)]
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 3 qian), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 qian).
Heat consumes the Yuan (Original) Shen, leading to shortness of breath and fatigue, thirst with coughing, and spontaneous sweating; this formula governs these conditions.
The Lung governs Qi; heat-fire consumption causes shortness of breath. Metal (Lung) is overcome by Fire and cannot generate Fire (Heart), causing thirst. Lack of Qi leads to fatigue and spontaneous sweating; deficiency-fire attacking the Lung causes coughing. This is a sign of villains rising and gentlemen declining. Ginseng tonifies Lung Qi, Ophiopogon clears Lung Heat, and Schisandra astringes Lung Qi. One tonifies, one clears, one astringes; the method of nourishing Qi is complete. Named "Shengmai" (Generate the Pulse), because the pulse becomes exhausted without Qi and becomes full with Qi. Wang Ang's annotation: "When a person is dying and the pulse ceases, taking this can restore life," but shallow scholars claim it as treating according to the disease with no effect. How could they know that pulse cessation is due to Yang Qi exhaustion, where single Ginseng suffices? Otherwise, Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) or Hui Sheng Dan (Return Life Pill) must be used; how are Schisandra and Ophiopogon suitable? Erroneous words cause harm, which is extremely unkind. Li Dongyuan said: "In summer, adding Astragalus and Licorice to this formula makes Qi and strength surge, allowing its meaning to be extended."
Poem states: "Ophiopogon is clear and bitter, Schisandra is sour and pungent; who says it generates the pulse? The power of Ginseng completes it."
