Radix Prunellae (4 liang) Cyperi Rhizoma (2 liang) Radix Glycyrrhizae (1 liang) Semen Gossypii Herbacei (5 qian) [Note: "Shanzhiren" usually refers to Gardenia Fruit, but literally means Gossypium seed; in context of clearing heat/fire, it is likely Gardenia. However, standard TCM herb for Shanzhi is Fructus Gardeniae. I will use Fructus Gardeniae as per common usage of Shanzhi/Shanzhiren in this context, or clarify if ambiguous. Given "Shanzhi" appears later, "Shanzhiren" here likely refers to the same or similar heat-clearing agent. Let's stick to Fructus Gardeniae for clarity in English, or specify.] *Correction*: In many contexts, Shanzhiren might be a typo or variant for Zhizi (Gardenia). Later text says "Shanzhi". I will translate Shanzhiren as Fructus Gardeniae (Gardenia Fruit) assuming it refers to the same therapeutic action, or keep it literal if distinct. Actually, Shanzhiren is rarely used alone compared to Zhizi. I will use Fructus Gardeniae (Gardenia Fruit) for both to maintain consistency with the later mention of "Shanzhi" and the function described.
Eyes pain at night, continuous tearing, and conditions that worsen after applying or ingesting bitter-cold medicines: this formula works miraculously.
Eye pain accompanied by tearing are manifestations of the Liver (Zang organ). Theoretically, one should purge fire; if ineffective, treatment should cease. How could it worsen? This is because night belongs to Yin, and the medicines used are also Yin/Cold. This is akin to "excessive Cold Water," where the retaliatory Qi manifests as strong Wind. Hence, the condition worsens. Prunella vulgaris (Xiakucao) blooms in April and withers at the Summer Solstice; it embodies the purest Yang Qi. Therefore, it treats deficiency-pain of the Jueyin (Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian). The reason this formula is considered miraculous is that it uses pure Yang to counterbalance Yin pathology. Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) and Glycyrrhiza (Gancao) reflect the principle that Wood roots in Earth, and those who plant must nurture the root. Moreover, since Wood controls Earth, these herbs are used to prevent future transmission (treating disease before it arises). Gardenia fruit (Zhizi) and clear tea clear the "curved and straight" fire of Wood (Liver Qi stagnation transforming into Fire), preventing the disturbance from generating Wind. This precisely constitutes soothing the Liver. Thus, it is named "Tea-Regulating Liver-Soothing Powder."
Tea is originally a pure dietary item, highly appreciated by famous scholars. This can be seen in reading *The Classic of Tea*, *Tea Manual*, *Tea Record*, and various poems. Although its quality is naturally fragrant and clean, capable of resolving stagnation and washing away vexation, its nature is actually bitter and cold. It damages Stomach Qi and depletes Kidney Essence. The finer the quality, the more potent its effect. Unless one consumes rich, fatty, and heavy foods regularly, one cannot withstand its sharpness. For frugal and simple individuals, one or two cups after meals suffice. If tea is treated as a study room accessory, drawing spring water and adding fire day and night, or accompanied by flute and wooden clappers to foster leisure, drinking seven bowls per song without fail, all will consume their Yuan Shen (Original Spirit). Although guests may leave with a sweet and cool sensation on the tongue, some may experience urinary incontinence, others insomnia during quiet nights, and even severe cases may suffer from sore throat, tight cough, empty distension in the chest and abdomen, gradual reduction in food intake, and a sallow complexion like gold. Such practices almost become agents that corrode the intestines. Now, at gatherings of relatives and friends, I wish to share these previous remarks. Regarding health preservation and cherishing one's body, I trust we share the same sentiment. Nevertheless, most of my lifelong confidants were made through tea and wine. If, as a host, I adhere strictly to these restrictions and do not allow everyone to enjoy themselves fully, it may lead to estrangement and rifts. The disaster caused by this would be deeper than that caused by indulgence in tea and wine itself.
Poem:
Trees dislike dense shade and prefer openness;
After a night of nourishing rain, death revives to life.
Indeed, there are Gardenia, Cyperi, and Licorice;
Watered with tea, they need not fear withering in summer.
