Ge Hua (Puerariae Flos), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Bai Kou (Tsaoko Cardamomi Fructus), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Liu Qu (Shen Qu, Mass Medicamentum), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus).
This formula is indicated for internal injury caused by alcohol and food consumption, manifesting as yellowing of the eyes, proliferation of fleshy growths in the eyes (Yuru, 瘀肉), and confusion between day and night (loss of circadian awareness or consciousness).
Wine is brewed from water and grain, and originally should be harmless. However, it must undergo fermentation with yeast (Qu, 曲) or steam/distill with fire and water; moisture transforms through dryness and heat, thus possessing intense heat properties and toxicity, which ancient people named "Huo Quan" (Fountain of Calamity). For individuals with deficiency-cold constitutions or those suddenly exposed to external dampness, moderate drinking can facilitate the circulation of Ying (Nutrient Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi). But if one overdrinks due to its sweet, fragrant, slippery, and pungent taste, it will damage the Stomach and deplete Qi. Damage to Qi leads to yellowing of the eyes; damage to the Stomach leads to fleshy growths. Confusion between day and night occurs because one is intoxicated by wine and remains unconscious. Ge Hua and Zhi Shi specifically resolve wine toxicity; Fu Ling and Ze Xie directly promote diuresis to drain wine-dampness; to move stagnation and eliminate greasiness, Sha Ren, Mu Xiang, Shen Qu, and Ju Hong are suitable; to stop vomiting and support the Stomach, Gan Jiang, Bai Kou, Ren Shen, and Bai Zhu are required. Those with "wine virtue" and capacity, who are not enslaved by alcohol, may occasionally take this decoction when slightly intoxicated. However, if chronic alcoholism leads to accumulation disorders (Pi Ji, 癖积) and exhaustion from seminal emission, or if one drinks heavily like a cow day and night, beyond the aforementioned symptoms, there will definitely be added acid regurgitation and epigastric discomfort (Tunsuan Za, 吞酸杂), loose stools, hiccups, and even dysphagia or projectile vomiting (Ye Ge Fan Wei, 噎膈翻胃), where even liquids cannot be swallowed. This decoction can only relieve hangovers; it is unheard of that it can revive the dead. As for those fond of power, wine causes them to fail in their duties; those fond of lust, wine fuels their desires; no matter how meticulous their schemes, they often reveal true words while drunk; no matter how cautious they are in daily life, they often suffer strange humiliations after drinking. Disasters to body and family, how could they be resolved by herbs like Ge Hua? Do not think that because I have this formula, you can live forever in a drunken state. In the past, Su Dongpo (Su Wen Zhong) ate only two bowls of rice per meal and did not prepare wine. When guests arrived, he would increase it to three bowls of rice and bring just a small amount of wine. He said: "Maintain contentment to cultivate fortune, relax the stomach to cultivate Qi, and save expenses to cultivate wealth." How meaningful! This is the conduct of our predecessors! The official Guang Lushi cites these principles to regulate drunkards, which is far superior to any physician's advice.
The poem states: To resolve hangovers, use Ge Hua with Ren Shen and Bai Zhu; add Bai Kou, Mu Xiang, Zhi Shi, and Ju Hong; combine Gan Jiang, Fu Ling, Ze Xie, Liu Qu, and Sha Ren; drink freely without restricting the quantity too narrowly.
