Postpartum eye diseases are often caused by blood deficiency due to excessive blood loss. The etiology can be categorized into internal, external, and other factors, requiring flexible treatment strategies. Internal causes, such as excessive thinking, crying, or visual fatigue (overuse of eyes), tend to lead to internal cataracts (obscuration of the lens). External causes, such as a preference for spicy and rich foods or invasion by head wind (cephalalgia due to wind pathogen), tend to lead to external obstructions, such as wind-redness and damp rot (redness and ulceration of the eyelids). Treatment should utilize Siwu Bugan Tang (Four-Substance Liver-Nourishing Decoction) with modifications, primarily using Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Adjusting dosages according to individual conditions yields effective results.
[Note] Postpartum eye disease is a syndrome of blood deficiency resulting from excessive blood loss. Although etiologies differ between internal and external causes, treatment methods can be adapted through the addition and subtraction of herbs. For internal causes, often induced by overthinking, weeping, or visual strain leading to internal cataracts, Siwu Bugan Tang should be used with increased doses of Shudihuang, Chuanxiong, and Danggui. For external causes, resulting from indulgence in spicy and rich flavors or invasion by head wind leading to wind-redness and damp rot, this formula should be modified with increased doses of Xiangfu, Chuanxiong, and Xiakucao, adjusted according to specific symptoms.
