Women's retrograde menstruation involves blood flooding the pupil, with the entire eye appearing red like cinnabar and fleshy membranes growing. This is generally due to blood heat causing menstrual obstruction and retrogression. Treatment should employ Tongjing San (Unblocking Menstruation Powder) using red herbs such as Suetamum (Sutum, 苏木) and Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄) to invigorate blood and unblock menstruation, combined with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang, 生地黄), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao, 赤芍药), Equisetum Hiemale (Zeicao, 贼草), and Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎).
[Note] The syndrome of women's retrograde menstruation refers to blood reversing upwards, flooding the pupil, resulting in a red and dry sensation throughout the eye or the growth of pterygium-like membranes. It is fundamentally caused by blood heat obstructing the menstrual flow, leading to upward reversal. It is appropriate to use Tongjing San (Unblocking Menstruation Powder) to break blood stasis and unblock menstruation, after which the blood-induced corneal opacity will naturally recede.
Formula for Tongjing San (Unblocking Menstruation Powder):
Suetamum (Sutum, 苏木) (1 liang), Rheum Palmatum Rootstock (Dahuang, 大黄) (5 qian), Carthami Flos (Honghua, 红花) (1 liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (2 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang, 生地黄), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao, 赤芍药), Equisetum Hiemale (Zeicao, 贼草), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder, mix evenly. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with 1.5 cups of water until reduced to 0.7 cups, remove dregs, and take warm after meals.
During menstruation, women may experience dry and painful eyes, vertigo, headache, and the formation of nebulae. This results from excessive blood loss during menstruation damaging the Liver. Treatment should employ Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonifying Blood Decoction) modified with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) to tonify blood, along with Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Leonuri Fructus (Chongweizi, 茺蔚子), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡), Tribuli Fructus (Jili, 蒺藜), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, 菊花), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang, 生地黄), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍), and Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎).
[Note] Ophthalmalgia during menstruation refers to dryness and pain in the eyes, headache, vertigo, swelling and dryness making it difficult to open the eyes, and the formation of opacities on the cornea (black pupil area), resembling millet grains or presenting as flower-shaped white depressions. This is due to excessive blood loss during menstruation causing deficiency and damage to the Liver Meridian. It is appropriate to treat with Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonifying Blood Decoction).

Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷) (5 fen), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) (5 fen), Leonuri Fructus (Chongweizi, 茺蔚子) (1 qian), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) (8 fen), Tribuli Fructus (Jili, 蒺藜) (1 qian), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, 菊花) (8 fen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) (8 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (4 fen), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang, 生地黄) (2 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) (1.5 qian), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍药) (1 qian), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) (8 fen).

Ocular diseases during pregnancy that present with excess syndromes must be differentiated between Qi level and Blood level for treatment. At the Qi level, symptoms often include dilation of the corneal pupil (spiral screw appearance); this is treated with Tiandong Yin (Asparagus Decoction) containing Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Tianmaodong, 天冬), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 知母), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子). At the Blood level, symptoms involve blood stasis and lipid keratitis; this is treated with Baotai Qinghuo Tang (Fetus-Protecting Fire-Clearing Decoction) containing Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 荆芥), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao, 连翘), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang, 生地黄), Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Suosharen, 缩砂仁), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮).
