Tianxing Chigan (Acute Infectious Conjunctivitis) can occur in all four seasons, is contagious, and presents with hot tears, eyelid swelling, redness, and pain. The depth of pathogenic invasion transforms according to individual constitution. The treatment should employ Qufeng Sanre Yin (Wind-Dispersing and Heat-Resolving Decoction), which contains Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Jiangjun (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix caudex), and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma).
[Note] Tianxing Chigan refers to epidemic wind-heat toxic pathogens prevailing in the four seasons, acquired through contagion, spreading among old and young, door to door. Symptoms include redness, swelling, astringency, tearing, photophobia, and pain. The depth of pathogenic invasion depends on the strength of the person; those who are strong recover first, while those who are weak recover later. It is appropriate to use Qufeng Sanre Yin (Wind-Dispersing and Heat-Resolving Decoction); if wind is predominant, double the dosage of Qianghuo and Fangfeng; if heat is predominant, double the dosage of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma).
Qufeng Sanre Yin (Wind-Dispersing and Heat-Resolving Decoction)
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried and crushed), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, soaked in wine), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (each 1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix caudex), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 qian).
Crush the above into coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove dregs, and take warm after meals.
Xiao'er Qingmang (Congenital Visual Impairment or Amblyopia in Children) often results from wind pathogen invasion during gestation. The pupil appears normal and upright, but vision is blurred. Treatment should employ Mingmu Yanggan Wan (Liver-Brightening Sheep Liver Pill), which contains Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Baipiao (Phellodendri Cortex), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma).
[Note] Xiao'er Qingmang occurs because the fetus was invaded by wind pathogen in utero. After birth, the pupil looks normal and distinct, yet the child cannot see. Sometimes there is night terrors during sleep, and vomiting of phlegm-saliva and yellow fluid. It is appropriate to use Zhen Gan Mingmu Yanggan Wan (Liver-Calming and Eye-Brightening Sheep Liver Pill); long-term consumption can lead to cure.
Zhen Gan Mingmu Yanggan Wan (Liver-Calming and Eye-Brightening Sheep Liver Pill) Formula
Jieyanggan (Sheep liver, baked dry in a new clay pot; if large, use half; slice with bamboo knife, one whole liver), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Baiziren (Platycladi Semen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 5 qian), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried) (7 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (5 qian).
Grind the above into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, size like tung seeds. Take 1 qian empty stomach, dissolved in boiling water.
Taifeng Chilan (Neonatal Blepharitis) originates from fetal heat, presenting with red eyes, sticky discharge, erosion, and redness. Treatment should employ Xiao Fangfeng Tang (Minor Saposhnikovia Decoction), which contains Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix caudex), Jiangjun (Dahuang/Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix).
[Note] The syndrome of Taifeng Chilan arises because the mother consumed excessive spicy and hot foods during pregnancy, or because the nursing mother consumed excessive spicy and hot foods after birth. This causes both eyes of the infant to be completely red, with sticky eye discharge and tears, and moist erosion of the eyelids. It is appropriate to treat with Xiao Fangfeng Tang (Minor Saposhnikovia Decoction).
Xiao Fangfeng Tang (Minor Saposhnikovia Decoction) Formula
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix caudex), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 0.5 qian).
Crush the above into coarse powder. Add one and a half cups of water, decoct until half a cup remains, and take warm on an empty stomach.
