The aforementioned eye conditions arise from other diseases. Some present with redness, swelling, and cloud-like opacities resembling external cataracts, yet external cataract treatments are inappropriate. Others present with dimness and unclear vision resembling internal cataracts, yet internal cataract treatments are inappropriate. One must identify the origin of the disease, infer the significant symptoms from subtle signs, and treat according to the specific condition.
For example, if sores and toxins enter the eye causing red filaments and cloud-like opacities, one should resolve the toxin; if trauma causes blood stasis leading to red filaments and cloud-like opacities, one should move stagnant blood; if red filaments and cloud-like opacities appear after a cold damage (Shanghan) illness, one should support healthy qi; if reverse menstruation causes blood to surge into the eye, leading to red filaments and cloud-like opacities, one should break blood stasis and unblock the menses. If these manifestations are generally diagnosed as heat and treated with cold-cooling herbs, the eyes will be damaged.
If headache accompanies dim and unclear vision, one should dispel wind and clear heat; if phlegm abundance causes dim and unclear vision, one should clear phlegm and open orifices; if weakness causes dim and unclear vision, one should nourish kidney essence and nourish blood; if dim and unclear vision occurs before pregnancy or postpartum, one should nourish blood and tonify the liver. If these appearances are generally diagnosed as deficiency and treated with tonifying herbs, the eyes will be damaged.
There are numerous types of symptoms, difficult to list individually. Here, several cases that seem like excess but are not, or seem like deficiency but are not, are specifically cited to enable practitioners to adapt flexibly and avoid rigid adherence.
