The eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the five Zang organs, and the essential Qi of all five Zang organs ascends to pour into the eyes. Therefore, Yin and Yang harmonize to form clear vision. Zhu Danxi stated: Eye diseases belong to Wind-Heat and Blood deficiency. The smallpox toxin harbors extraordinary heat, spreading from the interior to the exterior. If Qi and Blood are weak and unable to expel the toxin outward, the toxic fire will accumulate internally, causing the blood vessels to flow in reverse, thus allowing the smallpox toxin to attack the eyes.
Regarding eye conditions in children, if they are merely caused by an occasional contraction of Wind-Heat without damaging the sensitive orifices (referring to the eyes), treatment is relatively easy. However, when the smallpox toxin enters the eyes, it may be mild, with nebulae obscuring the pupil, or severe, with the eyeball protruding or sinking, making it extremely difficult to manage. Therefore, various prescriptions for treating post-smallpox eye conditions by predecessors such as Zhang Tiren, Fu Renyu, and Zhai Yuhua are listed in detail below. Infants suffering from eye diseases should refer to these established formulas, modify them as needed, and take them, so that darkness may turn to light, and one may see the sky and sun again.
Generally, when Qi and Blood have not yet stabilized and the meridians have not yet become cold, early treatment can lead to a cure; if delayed for too long, recovery may be impossible. Parents often neglect this matter, failing to pay attention, unaware that a momentary failure in treatment can result in lifelong blindness. Is this not deeply lamentable?
For post-smallpox redness, swelling, pain, and inability to open the eyes, the following is suitable:
Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (equal parts).
Decoct in water and take after meals.
If there is eye pain and dim vision, add Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Euphrasiae Herba (Nangujingcao), and Phaseoli Volubilis Pericarpium (Lvdoupi).
If there are nebulae on the eyes, add Bombyx Batryticatus (Chantui) and Tribuli Fructus (Bajili).
If there is excess Heat and constipation, add Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang).
Note: Chuanxiong and Danggui enter the Liver Meridian to nourish Liver Blood. The Liver governs Wind; Fangfeng, Qianghuo, and Bohe are all Wind-dispelling herbs. The Liver is the mother of Fire; once Liver Fire moves, the Five Fires will all flare up. Zhizi and Gancao are used to clear Liver Fire. These drugs are all agents for cleansing and washing away pathogens, hence the name Xi Gan San (Washing Liver Decoction). There is also Xifanlian Gao (Washing Alum and Coptis Ointment).
For post-smallpox eyes without redness, swelling, or pain, which can open in dark places but tear upon exposure to sunlight, and feel gritty and difficult to open, the following is suitable:
