This condition is commonly known as "Lou Jing" (chronic inflammation of eyelid glands, often accompanied by lacrimal fistula); if not treated for a long time, it may lead to blindness in both eyes. Adults also often suffer from this condition.
When infants are just born with eyes unable to open, it is caused by the mother consuming too much spicy and hot substances during pregnancy, leading to this disease in the fetus. A small amount of Bear Bile (Xiongdan) should be used with steamed water to wash the eyes, seven times a day. If they do not open after three days, use Shengdi Huang San (Rehmannia Root Powder). If the secretions around the infant's eyes are not cleaned thoroughly, turbid pathogens will infiltrate the eyes, causing redness and ulceration that persists until adulthood.
In children aged five or seven, if the eyes are closed and cannot open, it is because the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian governs the upper eyelid, and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian governs the lower eyelid; heat causes flaccidity of the tendons, resulting in inability to open the eyes. It is suitable to take the following prescription:
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (each 1 qian), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) (each 5 fen), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) (each 7 fen).
Decoct with two zhong of water until one zhong remains. Take slightly warm.
Adults with weak eyelids who frequently desire to sleep with eyes closed, without pain but feeling gritty and difficult to open, suffer from excessive consumption of cold-natured medicines, preventing true qi from unblocking the nine orifices. The following prescription is suitable.
For children with grittiness and internal warts on the upper and lower eyelids, remove them manually first, then take the following prescription:
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caulis (Guiwei), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) (each 6 fen), Carthami Flos (Honghua), Sappan Lignum (Sumu) (small amounts), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Poria (Baifuling), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (each 5 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Xigancao), Podagricae Radix (Fangji) (each 4 fen).
Decoct with two zhong of water until one zhong remains. Take very hot after meals. Decoct the dregs again. For lesions on the upper eyelid, add Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu); for lesions on the lower eyelid, add Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix (Gaoben) and Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi).
This disease initially appears either inside the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid. Initially, it is like a bean or a ginkgo nut; taking this medicine quickly will cause it to dissipate. If left for a long time, it becomes hard as stone and can only be eliminated by surgical excision. If neglected and untreated, it may grow as large as a peach, cup, or bowl, becoming tall, large, painful, and life-threatening. Adults also have this condition; I have treated many cases successfully with this prescription, which is remarkably effective.
