All below are chaotic. At this time, if there is no irritability (Fan Zao), the true Yang (Zhen Yang) in the Kidney has not yet scattered. Now, with the addition of irritability and inability to sleep, it is clearly a sign of scattering that cannot be reversed. Is this not a fatal syndrome? However, the prior cause was mismanagement, leading to an untreatable state; it was not originally untreatable, but became this chaotic condition. I have a miraculous formula named Zhuan Yang Yuan Jue Tang (Decoction for Turning Yang and Supporting Desperation). It uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 liang, Chao Zao Ren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae Preparatum) 1 liang, Fu Shen (Poria Cum Radice Xyli) 5 qian, Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 2 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. One dose allows for peaceful sleep and recovery. This formula uses Ren Shen to rescue the desperate Qi, Bai Zhu and Fu Shen to distribute and eliminate dampness to stop diarrhea; it also uses Rou Gui to warm the middle and dispel cold, adds Zao Ren to calm the mind and resolve irritability. If used appropriately, it will naturally produce effects as quickly as an echo.
In Shang Han (Cold Damage), a slow pulse indicates cold. Mistakenly using Huang Qin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction) to clear heat will increase the cold. Severe cold should prevent eating; now, the patient can eat, which is called Chu Zhong (Elimination of the Middle). Why does Zhang Zhong Jing consider this a fatal syndrome? Being able to eat suggests excess Stomach Qi, so how can it be fatal? The truth is that cold in the Stomach combined with cold herbs leads to the ability to eat only because Stomach Qi is about to perish, presenting a false image of eating to deceive. This temporary ability to eat is not sustainable. "Chu Zhong" means the Qi in the Stomach is eliminated and cannot remain. Although this is a fatal syndrome, I believe there is still vitality. Since the patient can eat, Stomach Qi is about to leave but has not yet left, so medicine can be used to preserve it. Use Can Ling Tang (Ginseng and Poria Decoction) modified: Ren Shen 1 liang, Fu Ling (Poria) 5 qian, Rou Gui 1 qian, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 3 fen, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, decocted in water. In this formula, Ren Shen and Fu Ling strengthen the Spleen and open the appetite, Rou Gui dispels cold, Chen Pi transforms food stagnation, and Gan Cao retains Qi in the center. Properly balanced, it turns defeat into victory, allowing the dead to be reborn.
Shang Han for six or seven days, with a faint pulse, cold extremities, and irritability, moxa the Jue Yin channel. If the cold extremities do not return, death ensues. This is Zhang Zhong Jing's original text. For Shang Han Yin syndrome with cold extremities, moxing the Jue Yin channel is a method of last resort, originally inferior to the efficacy of herbal decoctions. If moxa on Jue Yin does not reverse the cold, accepting death is said only for the poor who cannot afford Ginseng and other herbs. If treated with Shen Fu Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction), survival is certain. Today, out of pity for people, I transmit another formula named Huan Jue Tang (Decoction for Returning Extremity Warmth). It uses Bai Zhu 4 liang, Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) 3 qian, Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 3 qian, decocted in water. One dose brings consciousness back. Whenever cold extremities are seen, use this formula, and it will be miraculously effective. Bai Zhu benefits the waist and umbilicus; Yin-Cold initially enters from here. By benefiting the waist and umbilicus, the Kidney Palace gains vitality. Assisted by Fu Zi and Gan Jiang, nothing is too subtle to reach, so how can evil remain? Moreover, Bai Zhu strengthens the Spleen and opens the stomach, stabilizing the Middle Jiao. Will the limbs not regain Yang instantly?
Shang Han with fever, diarrhea, plus cold extremities, central irritability, and inability to sleep is a fatal syndrome. Body heat has not subsided, so evil is still in the middle. Now that cold extremities have appeared, although the body is hot, the evil is scattering. Diarrhea should stop spontaneously; since it does not, and central irritability increases, this indicates dry blood and lack of nourishment for the Heart, with Yang about to scatter externally. How can one avoid death? What method can save them? Only by supplementing Yuan Yang (Original Yang) remains. Use Shen Shu Tang (Ginseng and Atractylodes Decoction): Ren Shen 3 liang, Bai Zhu 3 liang, Chao Zao Ren 1 liang, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 3 qian, decocted in water. Ren Shen and Bai Zhu tonify Qi; sufficient Qi generates Blood; generated Blood settles irritability. Assisted by Zao Ren to calm the soul and Mai Dong to benefit the Lung, how can it fail to work miraculously? Even if not everyone can be saved, ten out of seven or eight might be.
Shang Han with fever and cold extremities offers a chance of life because cold extremities allow evil to exit outward. However, cold extremities may occur once or twice, but not frequently. With severe fever and intense diarrhea, how can prolonged cold extremities persist? This is undoubtedly fatal. Cold below and heat above, constrained in the middle, prevents interaction between Yin and Yang. One must harmonize Yin and Yang and connect upper and lower, turning death to life. Use Ren Shen 3 liang, Bai Zhu 5 qian, Gan Cao 1 qian, Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) 1 qian, Fu Zi 2 qian, decocted in water. This formula connects upper and lower, harmonizes Yin and Yang, stopping cold extremities and diarrhea. If cold extremities persist after taking the medicine, no remedy exists, and further medication is unnecessary because Yin and Yang are severed and Qi cannot connect.
Shang Han fever for six or seven days without diarrhea suddenly changes to diarrhea is critical; especially with continuous sweating, this is Wang Yang (Loss of Yang). Having Yin without Yang is clearly fatal. How can I save it? Yang escaping outward is caused by Yin forcing inward. To keep Yin stable in the center, one must first make Yang strong inside and prevent outward escape. Urgently use Ren Shen 3 liang, Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 1 qian, decocted in soup to survive. However, the poor cannot obtain Ren Shen. I prescribe another formula: Bai Zhu 3 liang, Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) 3 liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 liang, Bei Wu Wei Zi 1 qian, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 5 qian, decocted in water. This formula tonifies Qi and Blood to rescue escaping Yang; when Yang returns, sweating stops. Sweating stopping does not immediately stop diarrhea. Dang Gui and Bai Shao are specifically used to stop diarrhea. While Dang Gui is contraindicated in watery diarrhea, it is suitable for non-watery diarrhea due to its slippery nature, combined with the astringent Bai Shao to stop diarrhea. With Wu Wei Zi’s astringency, it stops sweating and binds the intestines. For the poor unable to afford Ren Shen, urgently administering this formula can save them from peril.
Shang Han diarrhea with cold extremities resulting in no pulse requires urgent moxibustion at Guan Yuan (CV-4) because extreme cold causes the pulse to hide; without moxa, the pulse cannot emerge. If moxa fails to bring the pulse back and slight panting occurs, Qi is rebellious and rising upward toward exhaustion. This is fatal, but I believe it can be saved precisely because there is no pulse. Death follows loss of pulse; here, the person is not dead but the pulse is hidden. If moxa doesn't restore it, is it truly gone? No pulse implies death, yet the person lives, panting slightly, meaning the pulse wants to return but cannot immediately. Use Ren Shen 1 liang, Mai Dong 1 liang, Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) 3 qian, Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 5 qian, Gan Cao 1 qian, Fu Zi 1 qian, named Huan Mai Tang (Decoction for Returning Pulse). If the pulse emerges abruptly after one dose, death occurs; if it gradually returns, survival is possible.
After Shang Han diarrhea, if the pulse vanishes and extremities are cold, but the pulse returns suddenly and extremities become warm, the patient lives. This involves moxa restoring the pulse, but warmth of extremities confirms remaining Yang. If the pulse does not return, extremities remain cold, Yang cannot return, and death is inevitable. How to save? The pulse didn't return because moxa was insufficient. Moxa is weak compared to potent herbs. Using 3 liang of Ren Shen will cause the pulse to emerge rapidly. For Shao Yin diarrhea with cold extremities and no pulse, Bai Tong Tang is used, avoiding abrupt pulse emergence. For Jue Yin diarrhea with cold extremities and absent pulse, moxa is used to restore the pulse suddenly. Why the difference in outcome? One uses moxa, the other herbs. Herbs can rapidly restore the pulse, as confirmed here. Thus, using Du Shen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction) saves the patient.
Shang Han diarrhea occurring more than ten times daily with a surprisingly solid pulse indicates death. Why? Profuse diarrhea consumes Yin, so the pulse should be weak. A solid pulse is a false appearance. Righteous Qi is exhausted and blocked by Evil. When Evil is excessive, Righteous Qi perishes, making death inevitable. How to save? Tonify deficiency regardless of the pulse's solidity. The formula is Huan Zhen Tang (Decoction for Returning Truth): Ren Shen 1 liang, Fu Ling 2 liang, Bai Shao 1 liang, decocted in water. Ren Shen secures Original Yang, Fu Ling stops collapse diarrhea, Bai Shao generates True Yin. As Yin grows, Yang lengthens; diarrhea stops and collapse is secured. Righteous Qi becomes strong, deficiency is corrected, and Evil defeats itself, resolving false solidity. False appearance turns to true deficiency, changing fatal syndrome to true life.
Postpartum contraction of Tai Yang Wind Evil causing severe panting, vomiting, and retching is untreatable. Panting indicates Yuan Yang nearing extinction; vomiting indicates Stomach Qi perishing; retching indicates Spleen Qi collapsing. Postpartum Qi and Blood are severely deficient, unable to withstand these three symptoms, making it undoubtedly fatal. Seeking life from death, I use a formula to greatly tonify Qi and Blood, adding small amounts of herbs to stop vomiting and panting, treating Wind Evil secondarily. Use Zhuan Qi Jiu Chan Tang (Decoction for Turning Qi and Saving Childbirth): Ren Shen 3 liang, Mai Dong 3 liang, Bai Zhu 1 liang, Dang Gui 1 liang, Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 3 qian, Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica) 1 qian, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 3 fen, decocted in water. One dose stops panting and vomiting, indicating vitality; otherwise, death ensues. Ren Shen rescues Yuan Qi between extinction and survival; Mai Dong calms Lung Qi; Bai Zhu saves Spleen and Stomach Qi before collapse; Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong generate Blood; Jing Jie guides Blood back to vessels and disperses Evil, assisting Gui Zhi to disperse Wind and enter the Bladder, directing flow downward rather than upward. The dosage reflects deep intent, not arbitrary light usage. Approximately 70-80% survive if Ren Shen is not sparingly used.
Postpartum wind evil contraction presents as Tai Yang syndrome: spitting pus and blood, headache as if breaking, incessant heart vexation, abdominal pain as if dying, or chest binding. These are untreatable because postpartum Qi and Blood deficiency precludes dispelling Evil, and the disease is too severe for direct treatment. Spitting pus/blood means Blood rises instead of descending; headache means Blood cannot nourish Yang, and Yang seeks separation from Yin; heart vexation means Heart Blood is exhausted and Kidney Water fails to nourish; abdominal pain means extreme cold in abdomen invading Kidney, Ming Men Fire escaping; chest binding means undigested food in Stomach and failing Stomach Qi. Seeing even one symptom is difficult to treat; seeing all guarantees death. You ask for one formula to save them? Postpartum evil contraction need not be deeply analyzed; simply tonify Zheng (Righteousness), and Evil retreats. Use Fo Shou San (Buddha's Hand Powder) with added Ren Shen, assisted by Rou Gui and Jing Jie. Treating specific symptoms is unnecessary; they will resolve themselves. Dang Gui 2 liang, Chuan Xiong 1 liang, Ren Shen 3 liang, Jing Jie 2 qian, Rou Gui 1 qian. One dose shows effect, two doses cure completely. Fo Shou San is a sacred formula for postpartum; adding Ren Shen enhances power, generating new tissue, removing old, dispersing Evil, guiding Blood, stopping pain, calming mind, opening stomach, and digesting food. Hence, miraculous effects.
Postpartum Shao Yang Wind Evil causing incessant delirium, irritability, and palpitations is fatal. Shao Yang belongs to the Gallbladder channel. Without Gallbladder juice, Heart cannot be moistened; without Heart Blood, Heart cannot be nourished. Thus, mental confusion and delirium arise; irritability and palpitations follow, all due to Blood deficiency. Deficiency requires Blood tonification, so why fatal? Gallbladder Wood receives Evil; not releasing exterior prevents Blood generation, but solely releasing exterior耗散 (consumes/scatters) Blood. Balancing both is difficult, yet not impossible. Use modified Fo Shou San: Dang Gui 2 liang, Chuan Xiong 1 liang, Ren Shen 1 liang, Chao Zao Ren 1 liang, Mai Dong 3 qian, Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) a piece, Dan Sha (Cinnabaris) 1 qian, Shu Di Huang 5 qian, decocted in water. Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong generate Blood to nourish Heart; Ren Shen, Zao Ren, Mai Dong, Zhu Ru, and Dan Sha calm the mind; Shu Di Huang tonifies Kidney. Upper and lower support each other; Heart and Kidney mutually assist. How can irritability, palpitations, and delirium persist?
Postpartum Yangming Wind Evil causing severe panting and sweating is also untreatable. Wind Evil entering Yangming transforms cold to heat, causing severe panting and sweating. For healthy individuals, Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) would be used, but postpartum Qi and Blood deficiency prohibits this. However, greatly tonifying postpartum Qi and Blood while simultaneously treating Yangming pathogenic fire may reduce the fire and eliminate panting and sweating. Use Bu Xu Jiang Huo Tang (Decoction for Tonifying Deficiency and Descending Fire): Mai Dong 1 liang, Ren Shen 5 qian, Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) 5 qian, Sang Ye (Mori Folium) 14 leaves, Su Zi 5 fen, decocted in water. Ren Shen and Mai Dong tonify Qi; Xuan Shen descends fire; Sang Ye stops sweating; Su Zi calms panting. It supports Righteousness without attacking Evil, eliminates Evil without damaging Righteousness, achieving miraculous results.
Postpartum Yangming Evil causing mania and Yang loss is untreatable. Mania is usually Excess Heat; postpartum mania is Deficiency Heat. Excess Heat can be cleared to stop mania, but Deficiency Heat cannot be cleared to stop mania. Yet, I believe it is treatable precisely because of Yang loss. Yang loss is mostly Qi deficiency; even with Excess Heat, Qi remains deficient. Thus, clearing Excess Heat must include Ren Shen, especially since postpartum is inherently a deficiency syndrome. Generally, for Yang loss, stopping sweating indicates vitality. I do not aim to stop mania directly but first stop sweating. Use Jiu Yang Tang (Decoction for Saving Yang): Ren Shen 3 liang, Sang Ye 30 leaves, Mai Dong 2 liang, Xuan Shen 1 liang, Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) 5 qian, decocted in water. One dose stops sweating, two doses stop mania. Do not use three doses. After two doses, regulate with Ren Shen, Mai Dong, Bei Wu Wei Zi, Dang Gui, and Chuan Xiong alone for natural peace. This formula treats acute Yang loss emergencies, not as a general postpartum miracle formula. Qing Hao, though tonifying, scatters more than tonifies; it borrows scattering-with-tonifying properties to remove Stomach fire temporarily. Overuse damages postpartum Qi and Blood, so change formulas after two doses.
Pregnant woman near term suddenly contracting Shao Yin Wind Evil, with aversion to cold, curling up, and cold extremities is untreatable. Shao Yin is the Kidney channel. Whether transmitted or direct invasion, this syndrome is often untreatable. Shao Yin Kidney channel prefers warmth over cold. Wind-Cold invasion weakens Ming Men Fire, filling Kidney Palace with cold, inevitably chilling the Uterus. Cold extremities indicate extreme Spleen-Stomach cold. Extreme Spleen-Stomach cold leads to death. I believe it can be saved because the fetus has not been delivered; urgently use warm-hot herbs. Name: San Han Jiu Tai Tang (Decoction for Dispelling Cold and Saving Fetus). Ren Shen 1 liang, Bai Zhu 2 liang, Rou Gui 1 qian, Gan Jiang 1 qian, Gan Cao 1 qian, decocted in water. One dose disperses cold and removes aversion to cold; two doses warm extremities and remove curling; three doses cure completely. Ren Shen and Bai Zhu secure Qi; Rou Gui and Gan Jiang dispel cold; Gan Cao harmonizes the middle. Although Rou Gui and Gan Jiang dispel cold, using them near term raises concern for miscarriage. However, their potency is fierce; Gan Cao harmonizes them to focus on dispelling abdominal cold without inducing labor, assisting Ren Shen and Bai Zhu to sweep away evil, achieving special merit. Not used arbitrarily.
Pregnant woman near term contracting Shao Yin syndrome with nausea, abdominal pain, and cold extremities is untreatable. Cold enters Kidney Palace, invades Heart upwards, not just soaking downwards into abdomen. This is heavier than the previous case. Kidney Water nourishes Heart; why does it attack? True Kidney Water nourishes Heart; Pathogenic Kidney Water destroys Heart. Now Kidney contracts Cold Evil, carrying Kidney Water to overwhelm Heart, causing heart and abdominal pain and cold extremities. This is urgent and critical. How to save? Treat Shao Yin Evil. Use Hui Yang Jiu Chan Tang (Decoction for Returning Yang and Saving Childbirth): Ren Shen 1 liang, Rou Gui 1 qian, Gan Jiang 1 qian, Bai Zhu 5 qian, Gan Cao 1 qian, Dang Gui 1 liang, decocted in water. The brilliance lies in adding Dang Gui. Shao Yin Evil dares to invade Heart because Heart lacks Blood. Dang Gui tonifies Blood, assisting Ren Shen to support Heart, providing nourishment. Rou Gui and Gan Jiang dispel cold and purge evil. Bai Zhu and Gan Cao benefit waist/umbilicus and regulate heart/abdomen. Naturally, pain stops and reversals cease. Zhang Zhong Jing said treatable after delivery using Du Shen Tang, saving after birth, not before. Before birth, urgently use my formula; after birth, urgently use Zhang Zhong Jing's formula.
Parturient near term contracting Shao Yin syndrome requires urgent large-dose warm Ren Shen and Bai Zhu; if ineffective, death ensues. This is Zhang Zhong Jing's text, implying no remedy other than Ren Shen and Bai Zhu. I believe using only Ren Shen and Bai Zhu is not foolproof. If ineffective, urgently add Fu Zi, Rou Gui, and Gan Jiang, likely responding effectively. I prescribe Quan Sheng Jiu Nan Tang (Decoction for Complete Life and Saving from Disaster): Ren Shen 1 liang, Bai Zhu 1 liang, Fu Zi 1 qian, Gan Cao 5 fen, decocted in water. Miraculous for any Shao Yin Evil contraction. Parturient 3-6 days after delivery suddenly experiencing curling extremities, rapid breathing/panting, nausea, and abdominal pain is untreatable. This syndrome contracts Shao Yin Cold Evil, forcing internal True Yang upward to Upper Jiao, creating false heat above and true cold below. Improper treatment leads only to death. Urgently use Ping Chuan Qu Han San (Powder for Calming Panting and Dispelling Cold): Ren Shen 2 liang, Mai Dong 5 qian, Rou Gui 2 qian, Bai Zhu 3 liang, Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) 5 fen, decocted in water. Two doses stop panting, two doses stop pain. This formula is a holy medicine for reversing Qi and calming panting, and a divine formula for dispelling cold. Incorrect administration often fails. Must decoct well, let cool slightly, and take in one dose. Medicine is hot, disease is very cold; one must follow its nature.
Parturient half-month to near full month suffering previous symptoms cannot use the previous formula; switch to Hu Chan Tang (Decoction for Protecting Childbirth). Ren Shen 5 qian, Fu Ling 5 qian, Fu Zi 1 qian, Bai Zhu 5 qian, Dang Gui 1 liang, Shu Di Huang 1 liang, Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) 5 qian, Mai Dong 5 qian, Niu Xi 1 qian, decocted in water. Half-month to near full month differs from immediate postpartum severe Qi/Blood deficiency. Thus, less Ren Shen is needed, and within Yang tonification, Yin tonification can be used. With Fu Zi to dispel cold, why worry about Yin stagnation?
Parturient after delivery with blue hands/feet and black body is untreatable. This is the heaviest Yin-Cold and most toxic vapor. Originally no method to revive, however...
