Discussion on Headache, Brain Pain, Pain in Both Arms and Shoulders, Pain in Both Feet, and Pain Below the Waist.
The Heavenly Master said: "What is referred to as 'Complete Treatment' means that for conditions such as headache, brain pain, pain in the hands, feet, and both arms, pain in both shoulders and back, and pain below the waist, one does not need to resort to dissection or surgical incision. Instead, holistic treatment methods are employed." For example, to treat headache, use one sheng of yellow wine, add one liang of Xixin (Asari Radix), three liang of Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), and one liang of Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix). Boil the wine until it reaches a state suitable for intoxicating consumption, and the patient will be cured after becoming intoxicated.
Lord Zhang said: "These treatment methods are unknown to the world and dare not be used by others; I will explain them. When headache persists for years, it indicates that the pathogenic factor has deeply penetrated into the brain. How can a small dose of powder medicine, merely one or two qian, reach the vertex and penetrate deeply into the brain? It is necessary to use large doses of Xixin (Asari Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) to vigorously disperse the pathogen. Some may doubt that using too many dispersing herbs will damage the True Qi (Zheng Qi, vital energy), fearing that before the headache is eliminated, the True Qi might dissipate first. However, one should know that when wind pathogens are in the head, it is difficult to achieve success without using a substantial amount of wind-dispelling herbs. When there is disease, the disease bears the effect of the medicine; what is there to fear? Curing the condition after a single intoxicating dose makes this formula credible and beyond doubt. However, after recovery, it is essential to take Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) five qian, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) five qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) five qian, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) one qian, Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus) three qian, and Maimai (Ophiopogonis Radix) three qian, decocted in water. Taking four doses is ideal. (Commentary: Blood-Nourishing Water-Generating Decoction. Excellent.)"
The Heavenly Master said: "To treat brain pain, use one sheng of yellow wine, five qian of Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), three liang of Baishao (White Peony Root), three qian of Xinyi (Magnoliae Flos), five qian of Yuliren (Prunus Armeniaca Semen), five qian of Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), three qian of Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), and one qian of Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Use three bowls of water, decoct into a soup, and mix with the aforementioned medicinal wine for drinking. The patient should drink until intoxicated to achieve cure. For those with good constitution, additional wine may be given, but must stop at the point of intoxication. (Commentary: Brain-Clearing and Leveling Elixir.)"
Lord Zhang said: "The pathology of brain pain lies in wind invading the Gallbladder Meridian. The Gallbladder corresponds to the brain, hence the brain pain. People often worry that using too much Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) is too acrid and dispersing, not realizing that Baishao (White Peony Root) harmonizes it, thereby preventing the dispersion of Qi while effectively dispersing pathogens. Xinyi (Magnoliae Flos) and Yuliren (Prunus Armeniaca Semen) are excellent herbs entering the Gallbladder meridian; Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are excellent herbs entering the Lung meridian. Why treat the Lung when treating Gallbladder disease? One must understand that the nose connects upward to the brain. Heat in the brain causes clear fluid to flow downward; if prolonged, it becomes Biyuan (Nasal Polyps/Chronic Rhinitis). By treating the Lung simultaneously, the Lung Qi becomes clear and descending, naturally suppressing the hyperactivity of Gallbladder Wood, thus preventing the downward flow of clear nasal discharge. This demonstrates the ingenuity of this prescription."
The Heavenly Master said: "For pain in both arms and shoulder blades, use two sheng of yellow wine, three liang of Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), three liang of Baishao (White Peony Root), five qian of Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), three qian of Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), three qian of Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), five qian of Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), three qian of Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen), three qian of Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), and one qian of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). Use six bowls of water, boil twice until boiling, extract the juice, and mix with yellow wine. Drink until intoxicated."
Lord Zhang said: "Diseases of the arms and shoulder blades belong to the Hand Meridians and are caused by Liver Qi stagnation. The brilliance lies in using Baishao (White Peony Root) as the sovereign herb to soothe and level the Liver Wood Qi, preventing it from invading and overcoming the Spleen and Stomach Qi. Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) are good at dispelling wind and travel directly up the Hand Meridians. Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) is also a wind-dispelling herb, working together with Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) to attack the pathogen, causing the evil to retreat. Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen) are sacred remedies for resolving phlegm; once wind is dispersed, phlegm will not remain. Furthermore, with Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) reaching every meridian, no residual pathogen can survive. Naturally, the condition is cured after one intoxicating dose."
The Heavenly Master said: "For pain in both feet and pain below the waist, use two sheng of yellow wine, half a jin of Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), five qian of Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), five liang of Yiren (Coicis Semen), one liang of Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), five qian of Fuling (Poria), three qian of Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), and one qian of Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex). Use ten bowls of water, boil twice until boiling, extract two bowls of juice, and mix with wine. Cure is achieved after one intoxicating dose."
All the above cases involve wind invading the limbs, head and neck, back, and area below the waist. Yellow wine is borrowed for its ability to reach every meridian, guiding the medicinal properties directly into the diseased area. This is what is called the 'Complete Treatment Method.'
Lord Zhang said: "Pain in the waist and feet clearly indicates Kidney Deficiency and Qi decline, leading to immobility, compounded by dampness, resulting in soreness. The brilliance lies in not directly tonifying the Kidney but solely boosting Qi. When Qi is sufficient, Blood is generated; when Blood is generated, pathogens recede. Additionally, Yiren (Coicis Semen), Fuling (Poria), and Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) assist in draining dampness; once dampness is removed, Blood circulation becomes more active. Moreover, Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) strengthens the Kidney, Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) warms the Kidney, and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) expels wind. They mutually restrain and promote each other, assist and complete each other; this is an inevitable principle."
Lord Hua said: "This section was never transmitted to me; I have nothing to comment on."
Lord Lei said: "I have a divine formula for headache to transmit to you. The formula uses one liang of Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), one liang of Shashen (Glehniae Radix), two qian of Manjingzi (Vittariae Spora), and five qian of Xixin (Asari Radix). Use two bowls of water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths, add half a bowl of yellow wine, and mix well. Take in the morning; one dose ensures no further pain. The brilliance of this formula lies in the use of Shashen (Glehniae Radix). Since Shashen (Glehniae Radix) nourishes Yin and originally does not enter the brain, when used with Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), and combined with Manjingzi (Vittariae Spora) and Xixin (Asari Radix) which travel directly to the vertex, Shashen (Glehniae Radix) cannot descend alone and must enter the brain along with the group. Brain pain is due to deficiency of Brain Yin, allowing wind to linger. By tonifying Brain Yin, wind cannot remain, and brain pain heals spontaneously, eliminating headache as well. This formula treats not only headache but also brain pain with miraculous efficacy. There is another formula for lower back pain that works like magic. It uses three liang of Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), two liang of Qianshi (Nelumbinis Semen), and three liang of Yiren (Coicis Semen), decocted in water and taken orally. One dose brings immediate cure.
The brilliance of this formula lies in using Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to remove dampness from the waist; Qianshi (Nelumbinis Semen) and Yiren (Coicis Semen) are also damp-draining substances. Once dampness is removed, the waist and umbilical region become unobstructed. Given your age, you may suffer from lower back pain; you can take my formula, and pain will cease. Only one dose is needed; excessive dosage would cause Yang to become too vigorous, which is unsuitable for practitioners of Daoist cultivation. It is an extremely exquisite formula. This formula is also miraculously effective for nocturnal emissions, requiring only one dose. These are the words of the Heavenly Master."
(Note: For headaches caused by Wind-Cold, medicines should be decocted with wine; for headaches caused by Fire Pathogens, medicines should be decocted with tea. Recorded by Li Ziyong.)
