Lü Zu (Master Lü) stated: If the five zang organs are diseased, the treatment principle is to "tonify three," meaning that the Spleen and Lung, Kidney and Liver, and Heart and Kidney are treated using the same method. Injury to Lung Qi must be treated by tonifying the Spleen; tonifying the Spleen is essential because [Spleen Earth generates Lung Metal]. Without understanding this, one cannot comprehend why treating the child organ (Lung) requires addressing the mother organ (Spleen).
The Kidney and Liver should be treated together. If Kidney Water fails to nourish Liver Wood, Liver Qi becomes depressed and stagnant, inevitably leading to symptoms of fullness and distension in the hypochondrium. The Liver cannot generate the Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life) within the Kidney. There lies profound truth in this, which is not something our generation can fully elucidate.
Regarding the treatment of the Heart and Kidney combined, what is the rationale? The Heart is a Fire organ. The Heart and Kidney meridians seem like enemies, seemingly unsuitable for joint treatment, yet they are interconnected.
Zhenren Hua said: The methods for treating zang organs are exhausted in these three formulas, leaving nothing further to discuss. However, if the Lung suddenly contracts Wind-Cold, resulting in nasal congestion, sneezing, incessant coughing, and expectoration of sputum resembling decayed cotton, the following formula should be used: Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) 1 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 0.5 qian, Suye (Perillae Folium) 0.3 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 liang 5 qian, Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) 5 qian, Chao Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen, stir-fried) 1 liang 5 qian, Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) 2 liang 5 qian, Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus) 1 liang 5 qian, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 1 liang 5 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. The brilliance of selecting this formula lies in Jiegeng's ascending property, which guides phlegm-resolving herbs upward to the Lung to disperse Wind-Cold pathogens. Once the pathogen is dispersed, nasal congestion is instantly relieved.
In *Shishi Milu* (Secret Records of the Rock Chamber), it is mentioned that for symptoms where Spleen Deficiency steams the Lung, a formula drying the Spleen and promoting dampness elimination is used; whereas for Lung Heat transferring to the Large Intestine, a method clearing the Lung and moistening dryness is appropriate.
Zhenren Hua stated: When discussing transformed syndromes, the medications differ. For instance, when Cold Damage transforms into Jie Xiong (Chest Binding), Malaria transforms into Dysentery, and Stroke transforms into Mania... then Jie Xiong... its... Gualou Xiongtang (Trichosanthis Fruit and Magnolia Bark Decoction)... on the Spleen...
Malaria transforming into Dysentery, progressing from mild to severe, presents a dilemma: attempting to induce sweating depletes Yang Qi already lost, while attempting to expel pathogens addresses a disease entity that has already changed. Attending to the upper concerns the lower, and attending to the lower hinders the upper... 5 qian... then the lower... now...
If... Pu... Phlegm...
Heatstroke is originally a heat syndrome but also arises from Qi Deficiency. Individuals with robust Qi and strong constitutions rarely suffer from heatstroke. Treatment for heatstroke should prioritize tonification, followed by resolving summerheat. People mistakenly believe heatstroke is merely a heat condition... blood, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) astringes Lung Qi, stopping sweating without explicit antiperspirant action. Using Sizijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) for routine treatment is like trying to extinguish a burning cartload of firewood with a cup of water—utterly ineffective.
Regurgitation (Fanwei) at its onset is indeed a Stomach disease; Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) plus 1 qian of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) can stop it immediately. Ignorant physicians, unaware of the correct treatment, use Xiangsha, Nongpo (Magnolia Bark), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Maidong 3 qian, etc., which are ineffective... Stomach, precisely because... dryness, then drink... purely tonifying Kidney... alas. This Kidney Water...
Although the name Fanwei (Regurgitation) is the same, the substance differs. For Fanwei caused by lack of Kidney Water, food is vomited immediately upon swallowing; for Fanwei caused by lack of Kidney Fire, food remains for a long time before being vomited. The formula consists of: Shanzhuyu 4 qian, Maidong 5 qian, Bei Wuweizi 1 qian, Fuling 2 qian, Shanyao 2 qian, Danpi 1 qian, Zexie 1 qian, Niuxi 1 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. This is Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) in decoction form. Its efficacy lies in using Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) to ignite the Fire within Water. Spleen and Stomach Qi must receive the warming of Mingmen Fire to generate. It is like trying to cook without fire under the pot; cold water and cold metal freeze into ice, requiring the return of initial Yang Qi to thaw. Human Spleen and Stomach function similarly. However, cold syndromes typically involve abdominal and cardiac pain. Why does this case present as upward vomiting instead? Because the Spleen and Stomach have an exit route, Cold-Damp pathogens do not remain in the Middle Jiao. Now, daily upper vomiting indicates the mouth and throat have become a clear passage, allowing smooth flow without obstruction, so the pathogen rushes out easily. Why would it accumulate in the Middle Jiao or occupy the heart and abdomen, causing alternating cold and heat, thereby tormenting the Spleen and Stomach? This explains why there is no abdominal or cardiac pain. Treating regurgitation in this manner is precisely how one treats Fanwei.
Xingjun Maori (Star Lord of the Rooster Constellation) said: Your explanation is lucid, though I cannot articulate it better. Using Xiaoyao San plus Huanglian for Fanwei applies specifically to cases where food is vomited immediately after ingestion. In cases where morning food is vomited in the evening...
